Title: Reading

NJS - April 3, 2006 07:16 PM (GMT)
Anyone successful?

Got mine at 20:11 after an octopus type operation involving two computers and a phone :)

Not sure about Franz Ferdinand but the rest looks pretty good with Muse, Placebo and Pearl Jam all getting a good going over from me.

Michelle - April 3, 2006 08:40 PM (GMT)
Grr, started trying at 8.30 after we'd come back from swimming, and eaten dinner. We probably should have tried earlier as we're still having no luck. Not on 2 computers, nor on the phone. :(

If at first you don't succeed, try, try and try again a million times.... <_<

Margot C - April 3, 2006 09:29 PM (GMT)
I got one  Only 2 of my friends have though...I really hope the others manage to get tickets later as it won't be nearly so much fun without them.

Says both venues are all sold out now, but I would guess there would still be some tickets to release? Hopefully? :(

They usually release day tickets in batches - more expensive I know but probably better than E-Bay.

Having said that every time I've been they've been selling tickets at the gate and theres been plenty touts as well.

I think all the festivals this year have been mental because of Glastonbury's year off.

kicking it old school - April 3, 2006 10:28 PM (GMT)
<_< Didn't get a weekend ticket, didn't realise they'd sell out so quickly so didn't try to get one til around 8.30. Are there still day tickets left? I'm trying to get 3 day tickets instead, but can't get through on any of the sites atm...

My friend bought a batch of tickets to sell on to friends who didn't manage to get them, but by the time I contacted her, she'd already sold them on! Slightly pissed off as I did ask her to reserve me one incase I didn't get one. Oh well.

Might just go through ebay, it's stupidly priced, but my dad's paying for mine and he shouldn't mind too much...

Michelle - April 4, 2006 10:58 AM (GMT)
Have gone down the ebay route and have got 2 for £194 each on buy it now. It's a bit annoying they're that expensive, but better than some of the crazy bidding on ebay at the mo, and I'd rather get them sooner rather than later.

Unfortunately, Paypal told me that amount exceeds my sending limit, so I'm having to set up bank funding which takes 3-5 w**king days. I've emailed the seller about it and I just hope they accept my plea for delaying in sending the cash.

They've just emailed me back to request a cheque instead. No problemo.

NJS - April 4, 2006 01:20 PM (GMT)
I think I had to get day tickets about 5 years ago and the rip off was that they charge a booking fee and registered post per ticket so since they're £60 you'd end up paying about £210 anyway.

Yep, that's what I was thinking. Anyway, I'm kinda looking forward to camping. I've never done it before. :D

I got 3 day tickets in the end. Ended up paying around £270 on ebay last year for a weekend ticket, so I reckon it's still a bit cheaper this way. I'm gonna camp anyway though...

As I've said before I'm too old and too soft to camp - I booked a hotel in October :)

Ria, you spoilt brat :)

Everyone have a good time then? :)

Highlights for me were Muse and Flogging Molly. Gogol Bordello, Arctic Monkeys, Feeder and Dizzee Rascal were also pretty awesome. Placebo were good, shame their set was cut short though <_< Overall

NJS - August 28, 2006 10:33 AM (GMT)
Just got home - a good Reading but not the best I've ever been to - a lot of the main bands were enjoyable but there seemed to be a lack of decent "new" stuff on the minor stages.

Best 3 for me - Wolfmother, Muse and Pearl Jam.

Margot C - August 28, 2006 03:34 PM (GMT)
I had a great time! 31 bands in 3 days! I'm impressed with myself for not being lazy at all

I thought Placebo were really disappointing. They played loads of stuff off the new album, and hardly any of their hits, which I think is wrong for a festival, where you should play the songs everyone will enjoy, rather than just promoting your new album. Also, was it just me or did they change the tune of half of the songs?

Best bands (erm...sorry, there's no way I can pick just 3! ): Muse, Tilly and the Wall  , Broken Social Scene, Maximo Park, Get Cape Wear Cape Fly, Coheed and Cambria, Yeah Yeah Yeahs

I was devestated about Placebo Margot - I like the new album but being 2nd on the bill at Reading should have meant pummeling the crowd with favs - they started with 5 new songs which is just criminal - at least get the audience on your side with a biggy early
on.

I think their "technical difficulties" weren't as minor as Brian suggested but thats no excuse.

Broken Social Scene
- Probably the band I'd never heard of before that I liked the most.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Wasn't sure beforehand but thought they were great.

Maximo Park
Anybody who likes the general Reading musical direction
(which I know is pretty wide) who passes up the chance to see Pearl Jam should be shot! :D

Exactly! I remember Incubus did the same thing last year, but I wasn't as annoyed about that because they were in the middle of the day, so it didn't seem to matter so much, and I'm not a big Incubus fan anyway. But I was looking forward to Placebo :( Oh well, I still had fun. The "entertainment" during the technical difficulties was kind of amusing......

Broken Social Scene are so great. My friend told me they're splitting up now, not sure if that's true or not....but I was so pleased that they played Anthems for a Seventeen Year Old Girl. I didn't think they would because it doesn't seem very "festival-y", and me and my sister were just saying "they probably won't play it", and there it was! That probably made my day :D

Margot

NJS - August 28, 2006 03:55 PM (GMT)
So were you one of the "entertainers" Margot? :)

The lead singer said something at the end about "its good to see someones last gig" or something like that - as I said I didn't know who they were - it was just a passing the tent/ that sounds good kind of deal.

kicking it old school - August 28, 2006 04:15 PM (GMT)
I also wasn't best pleased with the tracks Placebo chose to play, but they did lose about 15 minutes of their set, so maybe they'd planned to play more of their big ones... Pissed off they didn't do Pure Morning, but I still thought they were pretty good.. :)

I didn't see Pearl Jam either...

NJS - August 28, 2006 04:27 PM (GMT)
They tend to finish with Pure Morning Ria so I presumed that was one of the ones that were lost.

What bugged me was that Pearl Jam had a longer lead-in time than the other headliners and came on earlier - not necessarily anything against them but especially since they played after 11:30 which is supposed to be a big no-no anyway I would have thought Placebo could have been given another 5 or 10 mins.

kicking it old school - August 28, 2006 04:35 PM (GMT)
Really? My friend told me they always finish with Nancy Boy. She was pretty unimpressed with them like you guys. Though she said that's more cos she's now seen them about 9 times and is a bit bored by them.

Yeah, I noticed there was about 50 minutes between them & Placebo, it's a shame they didn't go on a bit more. Oh well.

No! Of course I wasn't....if only there was a way to make that not come across as sarcastic. No seriously, we were pretty near the back for Placebo. By that point of the weekend we were all too tired to go near the front. Plus the sound at the main stage was much better further back.

Yeah, Broken Social Scene were saying that it was Hope Of The States' (also brilliant) last gig but I doubt that's true because they've just released a new album...

Margot

kicking it old school - August 28, 2006 06:36 PM (GMT)
One of my friends fell asleep during Hope of the States... :ermm:

Margot C - August 28, 2006 06:39 PM (GMT)
 Haha, well each to their own and all that...I was slightly annoyed that they didn't play Sing It Out, cause I love that song.

I was close to falling asleep standing up in Primal Scream. I did think they were really good, but I didn't know that many songs, and I was just so tired.....

He's actually quite a big fan of theirs but had been up all night Saturday and started coming down just as they started playing - so curled up on the floor and slept :ermm: I don't know them at all, but thought they were pretty good :)

 I was exactly the same in Primal Scream. I was so tired I ended up leaving half way through and sat down outside to watch on the screen, until Country Girl, then dragged myself back to the campsite

NJS - August 28, 2006 06:48 PM (GMT)
Sorry Margot :)

I had a really bad "I'm getting old" attack this weekend - I only made anywhere near the front for Wolfmother and Placebo and kept thinking back to my first and second fesival (99/00) when I spent most of 3 days there :( having said that the bill wasn't full of people I'd really do that for anyway.

But it has given me the incentive to get fitter for next years.

The Primal Scream effect could be explained by the chemicals that lot probably exhude from their skin.

Margot C - August 28, 2006 06:54 PM (GMT)
We were pretty close for Belle & Sebastain and Yeah Yeah Yeahs (not in the goldrn circle thing, but against the barrier on the other side of it) but after that there wasn't much I wanted to see at the main stage, apart from Muse and Placebo, and we decided to stay back near the fires because it was cold

Haha, even I felt a bit old this weekend.....heard lots and lots of talk of GCSE results on the Thursday, and endless references to MySpace all weekend

I don't think I'll bother with Reading again, unless someone seriously amazing is playing, but the bands I consider seriously amazing probably won't ever play there. I'm hoping to go to Latitude again next year though.

Margot

NJS - August 28, 2006 07:09 PM (GMT)
I checked out the lineups for the past few years earlier and I definitely think this was the poorest (but still decent) but I think these things go in cycles. I'll probably stick with V because its handy and Reading I can do easily as I know it (and the hotels :))

I don't mind the "youthfullness" of the crowd that much - though smile at the Nirvana hoodies whose owners would have just been out of nappies when they were around - I also like the fact that Reading has a number of crusty old bastards like me - though I suppose Glastonbury probably beats it on that score.

I hope the fact that Glasto is back next year may take some of the pressure off the other festivals in terms of tickets - the timing usually means the lineups aren't that clashed either.

I wouldn't have bothered in the first place - bloody awful city. Still, compared to nearby Bracknell it's far better :)

Michelle - August 29, 2006 11:51 AM (GMT)
Well, the tickets finally turned up at 10.30 after a stressful wait, and we hit the road by 11.30. We had a surprisingly easy journey there, but it was lucky we'd bought a separate car park ticket in Orange or we may have had more of a problem.

We had an amazing time. :) Saw about 25 bands in total, even though some it was just for one or two songs, but they all count. ;)

Highlights were Muse, Pearl Jam and Belle and Sebastian. Kaiser Chiefs, Feeder, Franz Ferdinand, and Placebo were all good too. Although I too was disappointed that Placebo's set were cut short. I didn't see why they couldn't play for longer. And I was annoyed that I'd not spent more time listening to their new album as I didn't know half the songs that well.

The other disappointment was the Arctic Monkeys. Technically very good, but no stage presence whatsoever, and what a mistake to start with "I bet that you look good on the dancefloor" as that was the song most people wanted to hear. Also, we tried to see Russell Brand on the Sunday and after listening to the end of some other shite comedian, we were told RB had laringytus (sp?) so had pulled out.

Originally we had planned to stay til Monday but after 3 nights of camping pain, we decided to go home after the last band on Sunday which unfortunately meant we cut short the Pearl Jam set, but at least we got out easily and back to the house about 2.30am for a lovely cup of tea, a shower, and the best feeling of all - climbing into a soft bed to sleep in. Ahhhh....

Margot C - August 29, 2006 12:04 PM (GMT)
Aww, Michelle...Sunday night is the best night in the campsite!!

Neil, I thought this year's lineup was better than last year's. Or maybe it just seemed that way because I was a lot less lazy this year and didn't have any time when I wasn't seeing a band.... I dunno.

NJS - August 29, 2006 12:15 PM (GMT)
Michelle - you didn't mention the second best thing - the first visit to your own toilet :)

Margot - last year had The Pixies - end of story :)

I disagree with you M on the Arctic Monkeys - songs maketh the band and I thought the sense of oneness with the audience was superb - also hats off to the singer for being pissed out of his head for their biggest night ever.

Margot C - August 29, 2006 12:32 PM (GMT)
Oh, I didn't see The Pixies, Neil. But I'm not a huge fan of them anyway.... :ph43r:

I can't stand the Arctic Monkeys.

NJS - August 29, 2006 12:40 PM (GMT)
I think the Arctic Monkeys are a quirky distraction that has probably run its course already - I wouldn't call myself a fan at all but I enjoyed their "hour at the top" on Saturday.

Anyone who doesn't like the Pixies has serious mental issues - lets just leave it at that :D

We must be getting old! Not only did we not go to bed later than about 1am each night (the first night I went to bed at 9.30 as I had a really bad headache :ph43r:), we also didn't get half as drunk as we expected to and just couldn't cope with that camping lark for another night. It was the first time I'd ever camped though.

What area were you in? We were in brown M. We thought the further away the better, so at least the toilets might be better as there'd be less through traffic. I think that plan had minimal success as the toilets were still :x but at least we got lots more exercise walking back and forth.

Ah yes - clean, no queuing, a pleasant smell and flushable. Although even the service station toilets on the way back were luxuroius in comparison to the ones at Reading. The arena ones weren't too bad though, other than when quite a few were blocked and overflowing on Friday night. <_<

As for the Arctic Monkeys, maybe I just didn't pay them enough attention cos we went to the bar straight after the first song, and I hadn't listened to their album for a while so wasn't overly familiar with their set. However, there was just something about them that wasn't very captivating, imo.

Margot C - August 30, 2006 03:02 PM (GMT)
We were in brown too - B3. It was right at the back next to the wall of the campsite!

kicking it old school - August 30, 2006 03:06 PM (GMT)
We were in the exact same spot as last year (some of my friends went down on Wednesday to secure it as it's such a good place!) except it'd been renamed to Purple 2 (I think it was brown something last year).

I also went home on the Sunday night, couldn't face another night in a tent  Plus I wouldn't have fancied getting the train Monday morning.
