star_fury - March 29, 2006 12:37 PM (GMT)

Sorry, I normally look on Farscape World and Watch Farscape but they seem to be a little behind.
This is the latest review I could find
Farscape 3.1

thanks anyway. :) I found a press release for starburst edition 3.3 which told me what I wanted to know. I was quite surprised that there's a lack of information about Farscape starburst DVDs and especially reviews . :(

| Farscape: The Starburst Edition 3.3 is loaded with all the extensive, behind-the-scenes special features sci-fi fans want. In fact, the fourth disc is exclusively devoted to extras! Join Executive Producer David Kemper for “Season 3: A Look Back.” There are two cast interviews - Claudia Black (Aeryn), Anthony Simcoe (D’Argo). Four full-length audio commentaries enhance this edition. Two Commentaries for “The Choice” with actress: Claudia Black (Aeryn) and the filmmakers: Director Rowan Woods and Writer Justin Monjo. The episode “Into The Lion’s Den, Part II: Wolf In Sheep’s Clothing” has a new commentary with Writer/Series Creator Rockne S. O’Bannon and Executive Producer David Kemper. The season finale “Dog With Two Bones” also has a new commentary featuring Ben Browder (Crichton) and Claudia Black (Aeryn). Rounding out this packed collection are deleted scenes, the original Farscape TV promos, “Cool Farscape Facts” by Paul Simpson (author of Farscape: The Illustrated Companion), “Alien Encounters,” an extensive production design gallery, updated character histories, and previews of other coming attractions from ADV Films. Farscape: Starburst Edition 3.3 is the definitive edition of this amazing sci-fi series for new and established fans alike! |

IIRC 3.3's not out yet (due on April 11), so there won't be that much review wise at the moment :)
Actually I've found these editions quite nifty little buggers - now I just have to find the earlier ones....

I realise it's not due until 11th April but you can usually find DVD film reviews about a month ahead and figured that the Farscape DVDs would be the same. There are surprisingly few reviews of all of the previous starburst editions especially the most recent 3.1 and 3.2 editions.
Did you realise they have changed the DVDs and packaging? Before they were what is known as DVD 18 DVDs which are dual layer dual sided discs. Apparently they had tons of problems with them freezing, pixilating or not w**king at all. So since 3.1 they have changed to regular DVD 9 (dual layer single sided) and change the packaging accordingly. Instead of two discs the episodes now are spread over four per edition. :)

I wonder if the problem then is ambivolence - after all this is now the third release of these episodes on R1 (as I discovered when hunting for more of the Starburst editions): the season sets and the individual volumes! Perhaps there are no reviews as there's nothing new to add apart from 'excellent extras as always' (which is disappointing yet understandable)...
I noticed they had changed the design (I've picked up volumes 2.2, 3.1 and 3.2 at the present - and I can't seem to find any other discs aside from these volumes in any shop in town!). I was also wondering why they changed the design as over here it seems that an awful lot of discs have been squeezed onto double-sided discs, so I'm quite pleased to see them go onto 4 discs (plus the larger boxes makes it feel like even better value for money :)

I think unfortunately Farscape is a niche sci-fi programme and as such a lot of people have never seen it or at least never given it a real try. That combined with the fact that the box-sets were extremely expensive to buy meant that less people saw it, so less reviewed it. I'm not certain on this but the picture quality has improved over the various releases so it's not just a case of adding extras.
Nevertheless the reviews could copy the broad strokes of previous reviews summarising the story and episode listings. While adding comments about the extras and if appropriate picture/sound quality Updates.
I think the reason why region 1 uses double-sided discs is to save money because they are cheaper to manufacture. Unfortunately I hate double-sided discs and my recent region 1 purchase of space Above And Beyond has been produced on them. I don't mind slimline packaging because it saves on shelf space and as long as the discs are safe and Secure, that's all that matters to me. Fancy packaging is nice but I prefer practical. I love the look of my Buffy DVD packaging but I'm always worried about scratching the discs, so I don't really like the region 2 Buffy book design.

I think you've probably hit the nail on the head there, Phillip. I must confess that, after buying the first season's Starburst editions, I haven't bothered with any more. I've watched the grand total of 2 episodes on them, I already have all of the r2 individual releases, I very rarely watch extras more than once, or listen to commentaries, and I've got no inclination towards rewatching the series again any time soon, so I've definitely become a bit ambivalent towards these editions :ermm:

Although Steve you probably feel a little different if you were currently on a rewatch.

Possibly  I already own the whole series on r2, but they use up serious shelf space :ponder:
