Well Keith, DS9 is my least favourite of the STAR TREK francise but if I had to choose a character (and I am not including Miles or WORF as they are both NEXT GEN characters) then it would have to be ODO.
My least favourite would be bashir. Hated him in episode 1 and my opinion never improved.

Sisko.
Absolutely loved the character. There have been numerous worthy Captains; Kirk and Picard for example, but for me Sisko is the most layered character there is. Sisko's progression and evolution throughout the series was one of the particular highlights for me. Here we have a man who at first resents the assignment, is uncomfortable with the religious significance placed upon him by the Bajorans, out of his depth in his role as liaison between the wormhole aliens and the AQ, who inherits a distrusting (for the most part) crew. By the end of the series each of these issues had been addressed through to conclusion in their own separate ways, and that's not even mentioning Sisko's role as a responsible single parent ;)
Of all Trek's many wonderous characters, Sisko remains my personal favourite. People often go on about Pat Stewart's magnificent performance in THE INNER LIGHT, to them I say simply, watch FAR BEYOND THE STARS, you'll see that even Stewart's masterclass can be bettered on it's day.

Sorry I prefer Picard to Sisko

Sorry, Angel, I thought Avery Brooks was pretty wooden. We'll agree on something sooner or later, no doubt  ;)

The opinion of Brooks as wooden is a common WR don't worry :) It's just his style, he does himself no favours. Fortunately there are performances such as that in FAR BEYOND THE STARS that lend weight to his obvious skills :)

I loved the Picard character when I was heavily into TNG. I've seen the episodes that many times now though that I can't help feeling that Picard is just too two-dimensional at times.

I must admit I took an instant dislike to SISKO in the pilot to DS9, not only was he not a KIRK or PICARD character but he was actually rude beyond belief towards Picard. Later I got to like the character more (unlike BASHIR whom I have always thought was terrible) but still think Picard is a better overall character.
willowroolz - July 6, 2004 09:25 PM (GMT)
I must admit that Patrick Stewart can overact at times, and it becomes more obvious with repeated viewings. Not as much as Shatner though! In general, I think Stewart's standout moments far outweighed his bad.
Did anyone else see his one-man version of A Christmas Carol. He was the same there, one moment absolutely spot on, the next as melodramatic and schmaltzy as you could possible get. He was also extremely funny - something I wasn't expecting. :)

For classic Stewart "hamming it", check out his performance in John Boorman's EXCALIBUR, oh dear :)

I've got it on VHS or DVD somewhere.

Just to skip back onto topic for a second, Play are knocking the DS9 DVD sets out at £44.99 at the moment, lowest I've seen them so far.

I'm going for Miles O'Brien. A proper engineer who drank ale, played darts and swore. :) Mind you, if I was married to Keiko I'd drink ale and swear, as well.

I never really had a problem with Bashir. He was part of two of the best dynamics in the series, with his relationships with O'Brien and Garak.

Maybe if I had seen every episode I would feel differently but I doubt it. I just took an instant dislike to him and unlike the one I had with Sisko, this one never went away.

You never know Ken. The character was always intended to annoy to begin with, he frustrated the hell out of me with his constant ingratiating himself with Dax storyline
I grew to like him though.

I kinda liked Bashir. You might to be able to answer this, James, but there was a fantastic episode somewhere around the 4th or 5th season where he was alone on a planet trying to cure a disease that the locals were suffering from. Do you remember it? The end left me feeling quite choked up.

Was it THE QUICKENING Steve ??

Bashir, Dax, and Kira are on a routine biosurvey mission in the Gamma Quadrant when they receive a 200-year-old distress signal. They follow it to a planet where the population, once a spacegoing culture, is suffering from an incurable fatal disease inflicted on them by the Jem'Hadar for defying the Dominion. Bashir becomes obsessed with finding a cure for the Blight, despite the opposition from natives who feel he is giving them nothing but false hope.

Yeah, that sounds like it, thanks James. Did he stay behind on the planet for a while? I seem to remember him doing that
