Part Six – Nowhere to hide
Thrust into the back of a Police Van; handcuffed and being watched goggle-eyed by a Policeman sitting near to the driver’s cab, Dawn and Willow found themselves in what could only be described as one of the worst situations that they had faced this evening. Because they were handcuffed and their weapons had been confiscated, whenever the vampires did strike, they would be defenceless.
Luckily for them, their destination was the local Police station rather than the main station in San Francisco, as they had feared since their arrest. When the van came to a halt, the door was opened and they were pushed through the main entrance.
At the desk, they were asked for their names, and, in the interests of not making their predicament worse, they gave their real names. They were then dragged into the Police cells in preparation for the questioning from the inspector. The wait wasn’t very long and soon afterwards Willow’s cell was unlocked and she was led to the interview room.

The Police were still at the house. They had interviewed the three cultists, who had provided very little clear information to a frustrated Police sergeant. He heard them talk about “Vampires” and “a fight” and “being saved” by the two young women, all of which led him to the belief that they were all high on drugs. They also mentioned a man named “Ian” who they said was hiding upstairs. As it was the most plausible thing that they had told him, the sergeant instructed a number of the Police officers on the scene to look for ”Ian”. The rest were asked to search for drugs.
Ian had found a well concealed cupboard in one of the bedrooms and had hid himself inside. He could hear the sounds of footsteps on the landing outside the room, which made him afraid of making any movements that would give him a more comfortable posture in the cupboard. He heard one pair of footsteps come into the bedroom and tensed as he saw the torch swing around the room very close to the cupboard in which he was hiding. He was lucky – the Policeman was quite tired and the room was pitch black, which made a thorough search too laborious a process. After half an hour of searching the upstairs rooms, the Police gave up and walked back downstairs. When they declared that they had found nothing, the sergeant dismissed Ian as another fictitious element dreamt up by the cultists. He had written everything down though, because the inspector may be interested. Somehow he knew that he’d never get any further in his career…
After waiting a further ten minutes in the cupboard to ensure that the Police had left the house, Ian carefully opened the cupboard door and climbed out. After having a good stretch to make up for the aches he had accumulated whilst in the cupboard, he crept downstairs to discover that the cultists had disappeared along with the Police.
“So much for my inspiring talk!” he said quietly to himself.
Now was not the time to get the cultists back, however. His priority was to find Dawn and Willow and then to rescue them from the Police. All of the weapons had been taken away by the Police, much to Ian’s annoyance, which left him with a very trying task. Where could they have been taken, though?

The skeletal being couldn’t believe its luck (and, quite frankly, neither could Zeladin, who was in deep trouble). The two humans had been captured by the Police and were currently being held in two secure cells near to the house that they had been hiding in. The situation was perfect. It would not take much to dispose of them now. It looked at the youngest one through its orb, who was visibly afraid.
“Nowhere to hide now” it leered as it touched the orb with its index finger.
The orb had been de-activated. It landed in the skeletal being’s outstretched hand before being passed to a very nervous Zeladin, who was not much appreciated by his master because of his mistakes.
“This is your final chance. If you fail Zeladin, you will be disposed of. Do not let me down again!” the being said.
Zeladin bowed his head, placed the orb back in its holder and headed towards the other vampires, who were congregating by the entrance.
He gathered them together and announced that the humans had been cornered and were unarmed. The Vampires, who had been unnerved by their recent defeats, were now smiling wickedly as they all disappeared through a wormhole.

“Name!” demanded Inspector Perry. Willow was sat, handcuffed at the other end of the table in the interview room.
“I told you at the desk. My name is Willow Rosenberg” she replied.
Perry then explained that her name had not matched any name held on the tax records in San Francisco.
“It won’t be” she replied “I’m a tourist”
This was a lie of course. She had assumed that Giles had taken care of the paperwork for everyone. Obviously he had forgotten this very crucial detail.
Perry switched tactics. Her name would matter most at the trial, but was not so important tonight. He questioned Willow on the theft of the Car.
“We had to” she explained “We couldn’t run from that monster on foot. I didn’t mean to steal it – I’d have brought it back if I could”
“And why can’t you?”
“Because we’re still in danger. It’s still after us”
“So what is this “monster” exactly” Perry Asked “Is it a pet of yours?”
“No. No it’s dangerous. It kills anything that gets in its way. It’s after us. Its master is after us”
“Who is its master?”
This was a question that Willow wouldn’t and couldn’t answer. The truth was beyond him, although, he did know about the mole type creature that had chased them to the Golden Gate Bridge. She decided to stall for time.
“I want a lawyer” she said, hoping that this would do the trick
“Tough. There isn’t one around at the moment” replied Perry
It hadn’t worked, but she didn’t want to give him the answer.
“I’m not answering the question then”
Perry gave up. He was tired after nearly a full twenty-four hours of w**king. This case was not one that he wanted to bother with, but his day had not quite ended when it had come in. He asked the officer standing outside to take Willow back to her cell. He was going home.
Ian had eventually found the nearest Police Station. It had been a relatively tricky journey without a map of the town and without anywhere to get a map from at this hour. He stood across the road from it and looked in and saw the desk inside the main entrance. He wasn’t sure that this was the place where they would be held, so he was looking for a sign that they were. Sadly, he realised that the only such sign that would be of any use would be a horde of Vampires appearing in the middle of the street and charging in through the doors. Even worse was that his plan would require this horde to appear anyway. He couldn’t distract the Police officers and rescue Dawn and Willow at the same time. The vampires would have to provide the distraction. Of course, this all hinged on him being at the right Police station.
He got up and decided to walk carefully around the Police station itself in search of a fire exit that he could use to get in. He eventually found one in a dark corner around the side. After his discovery, he head back to his viewing position, recoiled back into the shadows and waited for something to happen.
The wait was over five minutes later when a wormhole appeared in the middle of the road. Vampires appeared from it and formed a group before they charged in through the front entrance. Ian now had to w**k quickly on the fire escape and hope that the Police would provide a decent amount of resistance to them. As he approached the fire exit, the alarms went off inside. He kicked the door for quite a while before it finally gave in.
Ian had appeared in a corridor that was quite near the cells. There were no Police around, which meant that the vampires’ distraction was w**king. Unfortunately, they hadn’t left the gates unlocked in their panic to deal with the Vampires, which meant he couldn’t reach Dawn and Willow. After tugging frantically at the gate, he heard a barrage of gunfire coming from the direction of the main entrance. The fight had started.
The fighting had unsettled Dawn. Moments before, she heard Willow being returned to her cell. Then, the alarm had gone off and the Policeman had rushed out of the corridor. She was frightened – she was in a cell with no weapon and the vampires had come to kill her.
“Dawn. Willow! Where are you?” she heard over the noise of the alarm.
She recognised Ian’s voice instantly and immediately she felt safer.
“In here. Can you get us out?” she replied
“No. Willow – can you?”
There was no reply. Willow couldn’t hear Ian as she was at the other end of the corridor. Dawn explained this to Ian, who was frustrated that there was no choice but to find a Policeman - a Policeman who would be fighting for his life at the front entrance.
An idea came to Ian immediately.
“Of course!” he said “Wait there Dawn”
Ian rushed off along the corridor to find what he was looking for. He found it in a tall thin case mounted on the wall in the centre of the next corridor. He smashed the glass, pulled out the fire axe and rushed towards the main entrance.
The Police were losing badly. The dozen or so officers that stood their ground at the desk were armed with pistols and two shotguns – nothing that would do anything more than keep the Vampires at bay for a while. Whilst she was firing frantically at one of the creatures before her, a Policewoman turned around to see a young man brandishing a fire axe.
“Keep shooting! I need the keys to the cells” he added authoritatively
“Why?” she shouted back
“These Vampires are after my two friends, that’s why”
“In that case, why are we holding them back? Why don’t we just let them have their way? They’re criminals after all”
“Because the Vampires will come back and finish you off. They don’t leave witnesses”
One of the officers brandishing a shotgun was reloading when three vampires jumped him and pinned him on the ground. Despite being shot at by a number of other officers, the Vampires bit his neck and killed him. The set of keys he was carrying fell out of his pocket as he has been given no time in which to attach them firmly to his belt. Ian saw his chance. He ducked under the flack and swung the axe at the three vampires. On the first swing, he decapitated one vampire, leaving the others pinned to the ground. When he was confident that the two vampires wouldn’t spring up, he grabbed the keys and backed away.
“Stop or I’ll shoot!” demanded the Policewoman
“No. You keep them here until I get my friends out. Then we’ll try and help you, but you mustn’t stop firing” he replied.
She gave up arguing. In any case, she couldn’t do anything else because, at the very least he had not decapitated her when he had the chance to. Ian ran back to the cells with the axe in one hand and the keys in the other. He fumbled at the lock – there were so many different unmarked keys on the ring. The Police officers had now been reduced to four and were slowly backing towards the gate that Ian was trying to open.
“Hurry up!” screamed Dawn
Ian managed to get the right key and the gate opened.
“Quick – get inside!” he told the Police officers.
Seeing their chance, they did so, just before Ian locked the gate again.
The vampires crashed against the gate with little effect - they couldn’t get through.
“Thank you” said the Police woman, putting her gun away. She was exhausted and had used her final round. Her colleagues were much the same. The only weapon that they had left was the fire axe. One of the policemen de-activated the alarm because it was no use now. They were safe behind the gate. Safe for the time being, but they were trapped.
