spiderman's new girlfriend revealed!

The Village star Bryce Dallas Howard is set to join the cast of Spiderman 3 as the woman who takes Mary Jane's place in Spiderman's heart.

The actress will play Gwen Stacy, one of Mary Jane Watson's best friends, and will be the third part of a love triangle.

Gwen becomes the girlfriend of Peter Parker, played by Tobey Maguire, but hates his Spiderman alter-ego because her police captain father was killed during a battle between Spidey and his arch-foe Doctor Octopus.

Filming of the next instalment of the Spider-Man saga starts this week.

Howard, who is movie mogul Ron Howard's daughter, joins returning stars Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco and new villains Thomas Hayden Church and Topher Grace in the new film.

So I've sat through two spiderman movies and all he's done is moan because he can't have Mary Jane and then when he finally gets her he wants someone else some people are never happy.

Could set things up nicely should The Green Goblin ever return

OK, for anyone who's wondering, and everyone who isn't

Gwen Stacey was Spidey's girlfriend in the comics, long before he got it together with MJ.

Gwen did indeed have a father that was killed during a fight with one of Spidey's villains, but he knew Peter's secret (wow, a police detective who could actually detect? What was the world coming to?? )

Gwen also died after (the comics) Green Goblin found out Peter's secret and strung her up from the Brooklyn Bridge. Spidey couldn't save her in time after the goblin cut the rope.

After a long term greiving process, he had some flings, most notably with Felicia Hardy (AKA the Black Cat) then got it together with MJ. They are now happily married and living with the Avengers (along with Aunt May who finally also found out about Peter's "other job")

So if Gwen is in the movie, they're probably lining her up for death, shame really, she seemed to have more spirit than MJ, and didn't scream quite so much

Let's just hope they do the storyline justice if they do go down that route.

Potentially, it could be brilliant.

Well, it would mean Harry taking over his dad's role as Green Goblin :shifty: Which even without "spider sense" we know is going to happen, although maybe not until the end of this film, as a cliffhanger for a fourth perhaps?

I think you're spot on there Jamie. They'll use this one to introduce certain characters and storylines that will probably payoff in the fourth movie.

That being said, it'll probably all play out in the background. They've tended to do that with the other movies, like having Dr Connors appear in the last one.

I just hope taht if they are laying groundwork for a fourth movie, that Sam Raimi sticks around for it. i.e. he doesn't jump ship to the opposition like another superhero director I could name <_<

I don't see that happening.

If that's what they are doing with the third movie then I can't see him passing up the opportunity to play that big storyline out in the next film.

Singer's mad passing up the chance to do X3. I haven't actually seen the story ideas for number three but given the ending to the previous movie I'd imagine something revolving around Dark Phoenix. If Singer's blown that off he's insane.

I'm not too bothered that he's jumped ship. Rattner's no mug, he'll do alright with X3.
