Title: Life On Mars
Crichton Kicks - January 9, 2006 10:09 PM (GMT)
Just finished watching the first episode of this and I have to say it's absolutely captivating. Ordinarily I'm not one for British drama but this is arguably for me the best pilot of any new show this season.
John Simm is fantastic so far in the lead role, and the supporting cast and characters are pretty well written too. The central mystery of Simm's condition and his sense of reality is obviously going to drive the series forward and I'm glad to see that they're keeping that fairly ambiguous. I'm really looking forward to seeing where this going.
This year's a big year for British genre drama, what with another series of Dr Who, Torchwood, Life on Mars and the new ITV Patrick Stewart vehicle coming soon as well. I can't remember so much homegrown genre television for decades, it's great !! Are we seeing a renaissance of British cult ???????
jamiearmour - January 10, 2006 10:32 AM (GMT)
I think we are seeing a renaissance James, all thanks to the success of Doctor Who last year. It made the networks over here realise that there is a market for shows like these.
I too liked this show, it's interesting, The drama is great and the little comedy touches
were hilarious. The whole temporal culture shock thing is going to w**k out really well IMO, as long as they can keep up the high quality.
I really couldn't believe that this sprang from the mind of Tony Jordan though  The man behind Eastenders, coming up with something like this? There must have been a blue moon shining somewhere in the world last night
A very very promising beginning
TheHighlander - January 10, 2006 01:22 PM (GMT)
Thoroughly entertaining, captivating and funny show.
Simm is uniformly brilliant in everything he does, from 'The Lakes' to 90s comedy, 'Men of the World', to his small part in '24 Hour Party People'.
The feel of the show, asthetically and in the soundtrack was spot on.
Totally agree with CKicks about the ambiguity aspect. There really is a lot of scope for development of almost every aspect.
A great debut. Best UK detective drama since...um...Burnside... :shifty:...
With Lost and Rome finishing, great to see another great show starting on terestial.
Top class.
smellyphagor - January 10, 2006 03:36 PM (GMT)
Nearly didn't watch this- glad I did tho, with Rome and Lost finishing I have time to watch another TV series, and I liked the first episode. I fancy the WPC. I'm sure you all wanted to know that.
Fangy and grrr - January 10, 2006 03:54 PM (GMT)
I really enjoyed this as well  it was completely watchable and entertaining all the way through. John Simm was excellent as he nearly always is as was the rest of the cast, in particular his boss. :)
Normally when you watch a British cult/genre you have to make allowances for it in comparison to US shows in terms of writing, budget etc but like with Doctor Who I thought it stood comparison really well.
Good soundtrack as well. :)
I also read it beat Celeb BB & the Soapstar thing on ITV in the ratings so more power to it.
Dan Dispossessed - January 14, 2006 03:22 PM (GMT)
This was a great episode. I was disappointed at how he got to 1974, but the rest was pretty good. The joking psychiatrist made me think that it really was a dream for a while and his modern day mindset worked for the location, but didn't for much else.

That didn't take much. Soapstar Superstar was really, really bad. None of them could sing!
TV Crazy - January 15, 2006 10:06 PM (GMT)
I gave this a shot, thought the general idea was good, going back in time to see the case happen before, but i thought it would be used to help him save Mya in the end, and i was disappointed by the ending. I might try the next one.
Glad it beat the BB and that ITV thing though.
Ems :)

I'm enjoying this new series I watched last week not sure what expect, this week episode was even better. I found the the scene on the test card girl really creeped me out :fear: I can remember seeing that when I was little. I think John Simm and Philip Glenister w**k really well togther  There are interview and clips etc on their website if anyone wants to check it out.

Episode Two was great. I loved the inclusion of 'Live and Let Die'. Classic
TheHighlander - January 18, 2006 09:30 AM (GMT)
Glenister's uber-anti-pc character is feckin superb.
Giving the 'v's' to the kids when he was in the icecream van was feckin hilarious!
Crichton Kicks - January 18, 2006 10:37 PM (GMT)
Not much more to add about the second episode. Bloody marvellous
Love the writing, love the acting, I really hope this sticks around for a while

I'm not usually one for British dramas either but something about this intrigued me so I tuned in and I'm absolutely hooked  Fantastic cast with John Simm and Philip Glenister playing off each other perfectly. I love watching out for all the 70's anachronisms
Dan Dispossessed - January 30, 2006 11:33 PM (GMT)
It's a great show and I think that the three series that the BBC want it to last for will make it a great show to remember

It is alleged that it will be released on DVD next January. The Sky+ problem is down to a box upgrade, or so I've read
I don't have Sky - I use the good old recordable VHS

Think it's been confirmed for a second series.
Crichton Kicks - February 7, 2006 02:24 PM (GMT)
Not quite coming to an end yet either, there are eight episodes rather than the traditional six

I was impressed by yesterday's episode. It was much better than the normal bog standard cop drama. Oh, and it did have a Dr Who reference

Yes...it has been confirmed for a second series!
Crichton Kicks - February 18, 2006 10:45 AM (GMT)
With the ratings it's been getting every week, even the BBC couldn't deny it a second outing.
Fangy and grrr - February 18, 2006 02:55 PM (GMT)
Seems the BBC were so pleased with it they commisioned a second series before the first one had even been broadcast and there's even talk of a film version.
From The Telegraph Online -
| QUOTE |
Life on Mars, the BBC's hit drama about a time-travelling police officer, is heading for the big screen.
Producers of the show, which regularly attracts six million viewers, have entered into talks about a film version.
The Sunday Telegraph understands that at least one big studio is looking at the possibility of an adaptation of the programme, picked up by BBC1 after it was rejected by Channel 4.
Claire Parker, one of the co-creators of the series, said: "We are having discussions about a possible film version but it's very early days.
"Life on Mars is a very high concept idea and there is no doubt it could w**k on the big screen."
Such was the excitement about the drama that the BBC commissioned a second series before the first episode was broadcast.
The programme tells the story of Det Insp Sam Tyler, an ambitious police officer played by John Simm, who finds himself stranded in 1973 after a near-fatal car crash.
The viewers has no idea whether he has actually travelled back in time or whether he is in a coma.
Tyler's politically correct approach to policing is in stark contrast to the attitudes of his new colleagues, in particular the tough talking Det Ch Insp Gene Hunt, played by Philip Glenister.
Tyler is horrified as he watches officers plant evidence on witnesses, beat up suspects and brawl with colleagues.
His attempts to come to terms with the different attitudes of police officers in 1973, however, provide a rich source of humour. In one scene he asks colleagues where he can get access to a PC terminal. A bemused receptionist replies that they don't have an officer by that name.
The series is particularly popular with police officers. DCI Steve Crimmins, of Greater Manchester Police, who acts as script adviser, said that while the show's portrayal of 1970s officers was "a bit like a caricature" most of what is shown on screen was "pretty honest". |
They start filming the second series in april. :)

Life On Mars is to be remade for an American pilot.
The time-travel drama has been commissioned for a US pilot by ABC, according to Variety. The show, which follows the adventures of a modern policeman who wakes up in 1973, will be remade by Ally McBeal creator David E Kelley.
Meanwhile, a second series of the original UK version has already been commissioned. |
David E Kelley is also behind Boston Legal.

The thing is, that it is such a very good idea that this was bound to happen.

Yeah. You could see it coming.
I reckon a US version would be quite good though.
They'd probably just use the premise and change a lot of the actual content.

Here's the really good news for our friends over the pond though;
| QUOTE |
BBC America has acquired the rights to air the British version of Life On Mars, just a day after a deal was announced to make a US version for ABC.
The crime drama stars John Simm as Sam Tyler, an ambitious young detective who wakes up dazed, confused and in 1973 following a near-fatal car crash.
The first 8x60' series will air on the channel "later this year".

Good news for fans of the Gene Genie: BBC4 are repeating this, starting tonight at 10. There is a documentry about it afterwards.

Didn't get to watch this when it was on because it always seemed to clash with something else I was already following, but I rented the first dvd and watched the first two eps last night, thought it was bloody brilliant
Very funny too - I think Philip Glenister was born to play that role
Feeling tempted just to go and buy it now, rather than wait for Amazon to send the rest of the dvds out one by one :ponder:
goth willow fan - May 17, 2006 08:29 AM (GMT)
Yeah he was definitely born to play a 70's copper

I was just reading some of the viewers comments on the Beeb about the first episode and found some classics...
| QUOTE |
"I was puzzled when the trailer for the new drama Life On Mars was shown. This is where the BMW saloon is 'transformed' into what should be a 1971/72 Ford Cortina MkIII GXL (1600 or 2000) registration number KJM 212K.
I say 'should be', as the front end is definitely a GXL model with twin circular headlamps; plus the 'K' registration is correct for a GXL of that year.
However, I was puzzled to see that when the sides and rear of the car are subsequently revealed to the viewer, there are 'E' badges on the rear roof quarter panels and a '2000E' badge positioned on the right hand side of the boot lid. These badges are from the later model of the top-level Cortina, introduced early 1974.
My father owned a 'K' plate Cortina 2000 GXL in 1972 and I owned an 'M' plate 2000E Cortina in 1975, and so I feel that I have a very good idea of what I am talking about here.
Although the car in question, KJM 212K, is in undoubtedly good condition for use in the forthcoming series, I really would have expected more attention to detail, as the car will be an important feature of the drama."

| QUOTE |
"I know it's a bit sad, but could the makers of Life On Mars please check their info on the Cortina.
The 2000E was not released until mid 1973 and came out on M reg plates I think. Life On Mars seems to have one on a K plate, which is extremely unlikely. Alexei Sayle made a decent programme on them a few years ago, which may be worth checking.
Get a life I hear you shouting, but if the makers need any 1970s research, please give me a call, especially on the cars."

"My husband and I both watched the programme with mixed views. I think I'll continue to watch, but a technical detail error did occur.
The Ford Zephyr* 6 displayed a G Reg Number Plate (1968/9) which would not be possible. The Ford Zephyr 6 was discontinued in 1965/6."

...and finally...
| QUOTE |
"This was an interesting and clever programme which brought back poignant memories.
I joined Greater Manchester Police in September 1974 - the location of your programme. But just to put the programme makers right regarding the time which the programme is based on and the role and uniform of Policewomen.
1) Women officers at that time were known as PWs, as in Police Woman xxxxxxx, not WPCs.(Woman Police Constable). So the female officer would have been PW Cartwright. This change of title did not occur until the Equal Opportunities Act in 1975, which among other things re-defined the role and position of women officers in the Police.
Prior to this Act, women officers were in a separate unit from male officers ('Police Women's Department'), dealing only with issues to do with women and children, for example sexual offences committed against them, and missing persons. After the Act in 1975, female officers had to w**k alongside male officers and now deal with all day to day crimes.
2) Annie's uniform was wrong regarding her hat, as this style was not in introduced in Manchester until at the earliest 1974. Also, in no way shape or form would her Supervision at that time allowed her to have a) have her hair that length - it always had to be off the collar - either, if long tied up, or kept very short. B) the hat had to be worn with the peak visible to the eye ie not stuck on the back of the head in the nonchalant manner as on the show.
My comments may seem trivial, or even petty, but they need to be pointed out as the show lacks the authenticity which the BBC's famous for."
Elaine Simpson, Manchester

Well, that's it. I'm so appalled by the BBC's lack of attention to detail that I am going to return my dvds for a refund forthwith :snooty:
