So before Christmas, I listed my Top 10 Hottest Men in Sci-Fi. It wasn’t an easy list, as I had to go through picture after picture of amazingly gorgeous men in various states of clothing! Phew! Talk about w**k. This week, I had to continue this perilous w**k, only this time it was spent scouting out the Top 10 Hottest Women in Sci-Fi.

Not everyone is going to agree with this list – and that’s just fine. I especially don’t expect the majority of guys to agree, because men and women just have curious differences in what they consider to qualify as ‘attractive.’ I’m hoping that there are one or two individuals on here that you may have not heard of before, and decide to check them out. As I point out at the end, I could have continued this list; it would have been far easier to list, perhaps, my Top 50 Hottest Women. I hate making decisions and cutting people out, especially when they are all gorgeous in one way or another.

Anyway, on to the list…

10. Annette O’Toole (Smallville – Martha Kent)
Proof that one doesn’t get older, one gets better, and Annette has certainly done that! She was gorgeous as Superman’s love, Lana Lang, in Superman III, and now she’s even better as his mother, Martha Kent on Smallville. There’s just something about redheads – especially ones with bodies like hers. May I please look like that when I’m 51?

9. Natalie Portman (Star Wars prequels – Padme)
As much wailing and gnashing of teeth as there is when it comes to any mention of the Star Wars prequels in my presence, I will give Lucas points for one thing – he’s really good at putting together a cast of eye candy! Natalie certainly rates in the ‘nice to look at’ department. In fact, when I try to think of classically beautiful women in Hollywood today, she’s one of the first to come to mind. And she just keeps getting more beautiful every year.

8. Gina Torres (Firefly – Zoe)
Okay, I admit it. I honestly wanted to list all of the women from Firefly, but I knew I simply couldn’t allow myself to give in to my bias and do so. In the end, I forced myself to narrow it down. Gina was a given. Wash always talked about his gorgeous warrior woman, and Gina perfectly fits that bill. Have you looked at the size of her waist? She’s got the classic hourglass figure, with long legs, well-toned arms, big beautiful eyes, perfect hair – I could go on

7. Musetta Vander (Various)
Musetta could be one of those faces you completely forget about until you see her – and then you remember she’s been in just about every Sci-Fi series that’s aired in recent years, and how could you possibly forget her? She’s played a giant preying mantis in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and a love interest for Teal’c in Stargate: SG-1. She’s just an absolutely gorgeous creature, with just the right amount of exotic looks that make it easy for her to pass as something other than a regular human female.

6. Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica – Six)
When I first saw the character of Six on Battlestar Galactica, all I could think was ‘Skank!’ Seriously, there was just something about the woman…and I hated the fact that I couldn’t stop staring at her, and her propensity for stripping down. She had really nice shoulders, though, and long legs, and…well, and then I saw her on one of Sci-Fi’s Behind-the-Scenes specials, and positively found myself adoring Tricia Helfer. She’s nothing like the character she plays, and even more gorgeous, if such a thing is possible. I prefer her without the makeup, but I’ll take her however they hand her to me!

5. Morena Baccarin (Firefly – Inara)
My second in my choice out of the Firefly girls, I probably wouldn’t have listed Morena in my Top 10 if I hadn’t had the chance to meet her. She is positively one of the most breathtakingly beautiful women I’ve ever met face-to-face, and on top of all of that, she is pure class as well. Her skin really is that flawless, her hair really is that dark and shiny, and her eyes really are that big and beguiling. I’d change my sexual orientation for her in a heartbeat!

4. Katherine Heigl (Roswell - Isabel)
I could never really think of many reasons to watch Roswell, beyond the eye candy, and Katherine Heigl certainly fits that billing! Normally, I’m not a big fan of blondes, but I think that anyone who overlooks this female needs to have their eyes checked, or maybe their head examined. I guess women that look like this naturally have to play aliens because, unfortunately, the majority of us humble human females just don’t. There’s gotta be something in her DNA…

3. Claudia Black (Farscape – Aeryn Sun)
I’ve stated before that this woman looks good in leather, and I’ll say it again – she looks really good in leather! Tall, statuesque, dark hair…oh, and let us not be forgetting the accent! Male or female, give them an accent of any kind, and I’m pretty much done for. It’ll be nice to see her back on TV in a regular slot as the now permanent character of Vala on Stargate: SG-1. Not like that show really needs any more eye candy, but who am I to complain?

2. Claudia Christian (Babylon 5 – Susan Ivanova)
It’s funny – I ask a bunch of my fellow females who they think is one of the most gorgeous women in Sci-Fi, and the name that appears the most is Claudia Christian. Few know the name, unless they are Sci-Fi fans…or happen to have that particular 1999 issue of Playboy. She was a tough-as-nails military commander on Babylon 5, but Claudia is pure female, through and through. She’s funny, she’s smart, she’s gorgeous, and she has absolutely no problem with showing off her considerable feminine attributes.

1. Monica Bellucci (The Matrix Reloaded, Revolutions - Persephone)
You know, I really don’t think anything needs to be said here.

Oddly enough, the female category of the 10 Hottest was much more difficult for me to narrow down than the male. I have a ton of other women I keep trying to w**k into the Top 10, but sadly, there isn’t anymore room! Runner-ups include Summer Glau, Jewel Staite (I really, really wanted them both in the Top 10), Amanda Tapping, Jessica Alba, Kristin Kreuk, Allison Mack, Katee Sackoff, Gillian Anderson, Mill Jovovich, Melinda Clarke, Jolene Blalock… The list could go on, but I think I’ll stop there before my fiancé begins to wonder what he’s getting himself into…

I think I agree with this one a lot more than the male one, although not sure about Annette O' Toole. Quite suprised none of the Buffy girls are in it (well ok Musetta Vander, but still).

Only opinion I knew but that's a naff list.

Oh yeah I don't think I really took in that it was a sci-fi not cult list, even though its clearly written in the title.

Perhaps I need to learn to read.

I mean....where was Teryl Rothery, Roxann Dawson, Linda Park....and Grace Park...?
Where were Jewel and Summer......?
Or Natasha Henstrige?
Possibly even Jolene Blalock, Lexa Doig, or Jeri Ryan too......

Sugar and spite - the dark side of girl power
By LISA ALLISON (theadvertiser.news.com)

GIRLS, traditionally raised to be more passive than boys, are becoming more aggressive, according to a leading author on child behaviour.

Professor James Garbarino, a best-selling author on child aggression and violence, said research showed aggression in girls is increasing.

This may be due to the traditional cultural message that girls are not pushy or violent being diluted by images in the popular media that portray women as aggressive, like Buffy and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.

"In the past it has been that the clear message has been that girls don't hit," said Professor Garbarino, who holds the Maude C. Clarke chair in humanistic psychology at the Loyolia University in Chicago.

"However that has changed as we see more girls on TV who hit and are more aggressive generally. Consequently, we are seeing more aggression in girls.

"In many ways we are doing better with boys... but it may be being counteracted with rising levels of aggression in girls."

Professor Garbarino spoke at a national parenting conference run by the Children, Youth and Women's Health Service in Adelaide yesterday.

He said rates in the U.S. for girls arrested for assault were rising. And studies were showing exposure to violent images was having the same effect on girls as boys, in terms of encouraging violent behaviour.

"Parents can limit their exposure to these violent images," Professor Garbarino said. "They can also show children how to control their aggressive emotions during play."

Sarah Michelle Gellar listed in the movie bitches you love to hate - or just plain hate

I have found it impossible to avoid the evilest of the evil when it comes to male villains on the silver screen. My favorite line from a movie-to this day-is from “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves,” when Alan Rickman, Sheriff of Nottingham, shouts, “And call off Christmas!”

In fact, Alan Rickman is the sole purpose I am not writing this piece about male villains in movies. Sheriff of Nottingham, Severus Snape, Hans Gruber: There are a rare number of actors who can make evil look as good as Mr. Rickman does, though there are numerous male villains who have unforgettably captured us with their greed, pride and slithery, golden hands. But what about the girls?

The sexiest man in Britain aside, haven’t we all hated some female film character one time or another, even if just for her cold eyes, deceptive grin and that crazy shit that she does behind closed doors? Of course we have. All of us must learn to embrace the evil that can (and does) exist outside the realms of Darth Vader, Saruman and all-time scariest lion, Scar.

This is why I bring you the Top Five Biggest Movie Bitches of the Last Ten Years. Prepare to loathe.

She Got What She Deserved Meter: ***** YES! to * Bitch got away

5. Rachel McAdams as Regina George, “Mean Girls” (2004)

She’s rich, beautiful and she does that mean thing where she says she likes your outfit and then makes fun of it as soon as you walk away. She’s everybody you hated in high school. Or maybe she was you in high school. Either way, she’s that ultimate bitch that will never be stopped... until she gets hit by a bus. (*****)

4. Daryl Hannah as Elle Driver, “Kill Bill: Vol. 2” (2004)

Anybody who poisons the almighty Pai Mei for relieving her of the stress of having both eyes can be kicked to the curb with a Black Mamba neck tie for all I care. While I do commend her for the gallant murder of Budd, brother of Bill, she’s still a major bitch who deserves the death she and her henchmen nearly put to The Bride. Only blinded? Come on. (**)

3. Sarah Michelle Gellar as Kathryn Merteuil, “Cruel Intentions” (1999)

Don’t let your eyes deceive you; that is not just any old cross she has tied around her neck. Every feigned, evil element of “Cruel Intentions” can be attributed to Kathryn and her greed for a gay football player named Court. Ah, but how Reese gets her in the end. Sweet, sweet vengeance. (****)

2. Rose McGowan as Courtney Alice Shayne, “Jawbreaker” (1999)

After killing a whole bunch of people in 1998’s “Urban Legend” (somebody please explain to me how she lifted all the bodies), Rebecca Gayheart chucks teen bitch Courtney Alice Shayne into jail after the accidental death of their best friend turns into a total scandal. Rose McGowan is so mean in this movie that she actually screws over a character played by Marilyn Manson. Yikes. (*****)

1. Pam Ferris as Agatha Trunchbull, “Matilda” (1996)

That time when she swings Matilda’s friend around by the hair? Holy hell. Not only can this woman throw javelins and hammers, but she can also force a tubby misfit to down an entire chocolate cake in front of the whole school. If any of you remember the Roald Dahl classic, “Matilda,” then you remember, more than anything, the fear generated by the evil, gigantic Mrs. Trunchbull. Leave it to Mr. Dahl to create a villain so terrifying that she locks kids up in a metal-spiked closet called The Chokey. She’s worse than those aunts in “James and the Giant Peach,” and yet Matilda uses her genius powers to serve that evil woman in the end. Adios, Trunchbitch. (*****)

the Leading ladies list

WORLDWIDE, the show is seen by some 21million viewers in 150 countries every week. In Malaysia, The Oprah Winfrey Show is aired three times a day (5am, 9am and 1pm - none of them repeats, on Star World/Astro), five times a week. Easily one of the most successful TV personalities and entrepreneurs in the United States, Oprah Winfrey is arguably today’s loudest mouthpiece for women’s issues on television.

While some may brand her programme as “over the top” (just watch her annual “favourite things” show come Christmas time and you will know what I mean), unashamedly gushy (with major celebrity guests like Jennifer Aniston, Matthew McConaughey, Julia Roberts...to name a few) and even trivial and indulgent (the episode where Oprah gets a “role” on Desperate Housewives comes to mind), Oprah’s strength lies in her readiness to tackle women’s issues head-on.

The 52-year-old former journalist and sometime actress broaches a wide range of topics related to women, from the frivolous (yet very important) stuff like choosing the right bra and jeans or wondering “Does my butt look big?” to more serious subjects like emotionally scarred wives, women in prostitution, suburban mums on alcohol and drugs, and female teachers and young boys, broadening the discussion to touch on secret sex at school, women who are living a lie, etc.

As a former victim of child sexual abuse, Oprah is particularly sensitive to this topic and has, many times, addressed the issue on her show. Most of her guests may be American, but the issues she deals with are universal.

In fact, one of her most compelling segments highlighted the plight of tens of thousands of Ethiopian girls and women suffering from fistula - holes in the tissue that separates the vagina from the bladder - a condition that occurs among teenagers who are injured during labour either because of their young age or because they have small pelvises.

Oprah featured Dr Catherine Hamlin who (with her late husband Reginald) spent the last 50 years of her life away from her native Australia providing free reconstructive surgery to these fistula patients.

Not only did the show raise the plight of these victimised African women (educating women about the atrocities their counterparts have to face in some countries), it also revealed the humanitarian efforts of Dr Hamlin, spurring viewers to donate towards the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital opened by the couple.

However, there are many ways to skin the proverbial cat. While talk shows are an easy medium to openly address issues, women’s concerns are also well represented in TV movies and series, albeit subtly.

One such series currently on the air is Judging Amy (Hallmark Channel, Astro), which is about three generations of women who confront personal and professional dilemmas in their daily lives.

The women, social worker Maxine Grey (Tyne Daly), her daughter Judge Amy Grey (Amy Brenneman) and granddaughter Lauren (Karle Warren), deal with tough everyday issues like gender prejudice at w**k, divorce, motherhood and so on.

The show comes across as real and being much more than a stereotypical drama about women partly because of the superb acting and also because it is based on the life of Brenneman’s own mother, Juvenile Court judge Frederica S. Brenneman.

Nevertheless, a show like this (where the focus is on family, relationships and real-life matters and not sex) may be rare and unappealing to a large section of the younger generation (read: fans of The OC, One Tree Hill and the like). A contemporary series about women would probably resemble Sex and the City, which also deals with women’s issues - like, what do you do if your husband suffers from erectile dysfunction, or if a woman is dating younger men.

The three generations of Grey women - Maxine (Tyne Daly), Amy (Amy Brenneman) and little Lauren (Karle Warren) - struggle to cope with life’s challenges in Judging Amy. With them is Amy’s brother Vincent (Dan Futterman). Whatever your fancy, TV certainly has ample programmes for and about women. The following is an index of other series (from the good old days to the present) that feature women prominently.

Cagney and Lacey (1982-88)

IF you are over 30, you may remember this 1980s cop drama in which the lead characters were two women, Christine Cagney (Sharon Gless) and Mary Beth Lacey (Tyne Daly).

Created by two women - Barbara Avedon and Barbara Corday - Cagney and Lacey boldly tackled issues for women like rape, incest, abortion and breast cancer, and won 14 Emmys throughout its six-year run.

Ironically, the two creators faced much harassment from network bigwigs on issues like wardrobes, hairstyles and the actors’ body weight.

Kate and Allie (1984-89)

THIS comedy starred Susan Saint James and Jane Curtin as two childhood friends who decided to move in together after their respective divorces. Although a comedy, the series was a novelty at the time as the two lead characters were strong, independent women who were not vulnerable to men.

Murphy Brown (1988-98)

Candice Bergen rocked as hard-nosed journalist/news anchor Murphy Brown in this sitcom. Bergen’s character was unmarried although later in the series she became a single mum. This caused some degree of controversy with the then vice-president Dan Quayle who openly criticised the character’s pregnancy for ignoring the importance of fathers and bringing up her baby alone. In the show’s final season, Brown battled breast cancer and, according to Wikipedia (the free encyclopaedia online), the show’s handling of the subject caused a 30% increase in the number of women getting mammograms.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003)

DON’T brush this series off as ridiculous because writer Joss Whedon developed Buffy to intentionally reverse the typical mould of girls who are helpless, hysterical victims of violence.

Sarah Michelle Gellar played Buffy who was great at kicking butt while looking damn good. She became, to many, a symbol of female power and the series had a cult following.

Gilmore Girls (2000-present)

THIS drama/comedy centres on the lives of single mother Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham) and her daughter, also Lorelai Gilmore (Alexis Bledel). The unique mother-daughter bond is indeed heartwarming, albeit a little unreal at times.

The themes highlighted are family relationships and generation divides as well as the usual relationship issues that arise between the two leading ladies and the men in their lives. - SI

Feature : In blood they act - Sexy TV sibling characters sizzle (rothers and sisters: love them or hate them, one thing’s for sure - they surely make things interesting on the small screen. From protective older brothers to estranged half-siblings, all of us can relate to the family affair factor, although it’s rare to find real-life siblings who look as hot as those seen in TV shows.

Nevertheless, TV sibling characters are doing various sorts of things for the sake of family entertainment. Whether they’re spies fi ghting the world, witches fighting demons, alien/human hybrids, or lost on a deserted island, the sibling bond pulls them through whatever obstacles the series’ creators throw their way.

Together, it seems, their love and understanding for each other can conquer anything, including poor ratings. Here’s Buzz’s pick of today’s most sizzling TV sibling characters ...

Tru Calling: Screen siblings: w**king the midnight shift at the local morgue while undergoing her medical internship, Tru Davies (Eliza Dushku) also hears dead people from their slabs, calling for her help and she does her best, while trying to rescue her own family members from living precariously and self-destructively, especially her scruffy, cutie-pie brother Harrison (Shawn Reaves).

Why they’re hot: While one sibling can see into the future, the other sibling is always messing up his.

Prison Break:

Screen siblings: When handsome Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell) is thrown in jail for a crime he says he didn’t commit, his equally good-looking brother Michael Scofi eld (Wentworth Miller), fuelled by brotherly love, robs a bank and lands himself in the same prison. Having designed prisons for a living before, Scofi eld uses his knowledge to help his brother escape from the hell hole.

Why they’re hot: Who wouldn’t want to lock-up two hotlooking brothers? Especially Scofi eld, whose solid six-pack stomach is completely tattooed.

Charmed:

Screen siblings: It all began with the original power of three - Prue (Shannen Doherty), Piper (Holly Marie Combs) and Phoebe (Alyssa Milano), who aren’t your average sisters but are good witches and together, the Charmed Ones do what they can to fi ght demons and vanquish evil while saving innocent lives. In their spare time, they shop, date and run their nightclub. With the death of Prue in Season Three, she’s replaced after the girls found their half-sister Paige (Rose McGowan), and the power of three was thus restored.

Why they’re hot: Vanquishing evil in their micro-mini’s, sprayed-on hipster jeans, heels and off-the-shoulder boobtubes? What’s not to love?

One Tree Hill:

Screen siblings: Nathan (James Lafferty) is raised in a rich household while Lucas (Chad Michael Murray) is struggling through life’s hardships. Eventually, they fi nd themselves in the same neighbourhood, school and more surprisingly, basketball team. Soon enough, the two rivals learn that not everything can be settled on the basketball court.

Why they’re hot: Chad Michael Murray’s convincing portrayal of sexy, streetwise Lucas deserves a mention, regardless of the series’ quality.

Supernatural:

Screen siblings: When their father goes missing while tracking down the evil spirits he claims killed his wife, two cute young brothers, Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam (Jared Padalecki), are hot on the trail to fi nd him. Along the way, they battle evil in all its cruellest forms, even if it takes episode plots that barely make the grade. But the brothers’ indignation against malevolence and demons charmingly gives them a Neanderthal-like quality missing from today’s prevalence of ultra-sensitive, metrosexual male characters.

Why they’re hot: Two brothers, whilst looking for their missing father, bare all (including their toned and defi ned abs) in a bid to get their family back together at all cost, which is hot in a stud-with-family-values kinda way.

Alias:

Screen siblings: For a long time, Sydney Bistrow (Jennifer Garner) stole the show alone. When characters like SD-6 and APO were introduced later, as well as the unravelling of many fetching discoveries, it was about time she found out about her half-sister, the sexy Nadia (Mia Maestro), who joined Sydney in their quest of saving the world while finding out more about their parents.

Why they’re hot: The sisters prove that you can be a girl, fall in love, play espionage and dismantle bombs at the same time.

Lost:

Screen siblings: So they’re not really brother and sister, but that doesn’t excuse their naughty behaviours. When their plane crashes on a tropical island, Boone (Ian Somerhalder) and Shannon (Maggie Grace) are forced to face their own demons, such as their not-so-innocent sibling rivalry which, instead, has a deeper malaise. The moral is, never take your siblings for granted, especially if they look like swimsuit models as is the case here.

Why they’re hot: Being stranded on a deserted island with an annoyingly selfish or disturbed half-sibling is the last thing anyone wants, but if it’s good-looking siblings like the said two, we then say, “Bring it on!”

Beverly Hills 90210:

Screen siblings: Okay, the 1990s aren’t exactly cool to us now, but back then, there’s nothing cooler than twin siblings Brenda (Shannen Doherty) and Brandon (Jason Priestly) Walsh. After being forced to settle into the rich Beverly Hills neighbourhood when their father landed a job promotion, the twins quickly won themselves some shallow, superfi cial, materialistic friends with rich kid issues. If anything, such themes had worked for the show’s success and raised its producer Aaron Spelling’s fame.

Why they’re hot: We like twin action of any kind.

Roswell:

Screen siblings: Alien/human hybrids Max (Jason Behr) and Isabel (Katherine Heigl) are thrown to earth and must try fi tting in with earthlings while hiding their supernatural powers. However, they surely can’t hide their good looks.

Why they’re hot: Talk about out-of-this-world sex appeal.

If aliens looked as good as them, then invade earth, erm, us, baby.

Party of Five:

Screen siblings: Take your pick from a family of fi ve really good-looking youngsters trying to keep things together after their parents’ death. Okay, so one sibling’s a baby and one is in grade school, but the other three - eldest brother Charlie (Matthew Fox), Bailey (Scott Wolf) and Julia (Neve Campbell) are worth checking out.

Why they’re hot: They’re every parent’s ideal offsprings: responsible, hard-w**king and cute enough to sell girl guide cookies in volumes.

Friends:

Screen siblings: Geeky Ross (David Schwimmer) and his obsessive compulsive sister Monica (Courtney Cox), are the core of their little group of friends. Through Monica, Ross meets his love, Rachel, Monica’s best friend. Through Ross, Monica meets her husband, Chandler. Measure in two more quirky characters, Joey and Phoebe, and you have some madcap humour and antics which made Friends one of the longest-running, smash-hit sitcoms in recent times.

Why they’re hot: Ross’ love for dinosaurs and obsession with Rachel make him endearing, and rather hot. As for Monica, her ability to tolerate and love the wry Chandler make her a class above other girls featured in the sitcom.

Top 10 TV couples who hooked up but then things somehow did not w**k out

IN the film The Break-Up, Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn play a couple who are always fighting about little things so much so they finally decide to end their relationship. The film looks at the happy couple only very briefly before it gets down to showing them competing for the apartment that they share.

In the television world, couples rarely ever hook up and have an easy time dealing with their relationships. As series runs season after season, the “couple subplots” could even turn into a main plot. Sometimes, to perk things up, the writers even direct the couple towards splitsville.

Admit it, when this happens, fans of these TV couples become addicted to finding out what happens next. Works every time too.

StarTwo takes a look at 10 TV couples who hooked up but then things somehow did not w**k out ...

1. Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Angel (David Boreanaz). The romance between Buffy and Angel was never meant to be, and these two beautiful people found out just how hard it is to break up. Why can’t they be together? The vampire with a soul Angel is cursed never to experience true happiness. The one time he and Buffy did hook up, he lost his soul and turned into the evil vampire he once was, forcing her to slay him. To cut a long story short, he returned to life but they realised a future together was impossible. Buffy breaks down and cries after Angel and she decide to go their separate ways; but he saves her the last dance at the prom before disappearing into the darkness of the night.

2. Smallville: Clark Kent (Tom Welling) and Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk). Will they or won’t they? The debate is still going on. Nonetheless we know that the adult Clark will end up marrying Lois Lane so it is probably a “they won’t” scenario. Superhuman or not, Clark has neither the power nor the strength to share his life with Lang. Maybe this is for the best since Lana has used up all her “damsel in distress” cards, anyway.

3. 24: Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) and Audrey Heller Raines (Kim Raver). First his wife gets killed, ensuring him zero chance for a reconciliation; then his lover, Nina, turns out to be an evil agent. Bauer botches things up again when he puts his country above his girlfriend. No wonder Audrey decides to run back to her estranged husband. Guess Bauer is just unlucky with love.

4. Cheers: Sam Malone (Ted Danson) and Diane Chambers (Shelley Long). Rebecca Howe (Kirstie Alley) stepped in to fill vacancy at the bar, but she could never fill the hole in his heart left by uptight Diane. When Diane and Sam broke up, Sam - the recovering alcoholic - even relapsed and started drinking again. That’s pain.

5. Charmed: Phoebe Halliwell (Alyssa Milano) and Cole Turner (Julian McMahon). A witch in love with a demon ... how poetic, eh? After much deliberation - which ran for a good three seasons - the sisters had no choice but to vaporise Cole. Understandably, Phoebe had a tough time getting over her husband.

6. Friends: Monica Geller (Courteney Cox) and Dr Richard Burke (Tom Selleck). While it was Monica’s brother, Ross “We’re on a break” Geller, who had a lot of break-ups with the same woman over and over again - Monica’s breaking up with the handsome ophthalmologist was quite devastating.

7. Ally McBeal: Ally McBeal (Calista Flockhart) and Billy Thomas (Gil Bellows). For a girl who so strongly believes in love, Ally has been betrayed too many times. Her childhood sweetheart - the one she thought she would spend the rest of her life with - ended up marrying someone else instead. The serial dater’s other romantic encounters - memorable ones include an eccentric lawyer played by Robert Downey Jr and a plumber played by Jon Bon Jovi - also fizzled out quickly enough to leave her broken hearted again and again.

8. The O.C.: Ryan Atwood (Benjamin McKenzie) and Marissa Cooper (Mischa Barton). The relationship between these two became just too confusing and drawn out. The bottom line remains, however, that these two are definitely not getting back together.

9.Gilmore Girls: Rory Gilmore (Alexis Bledel) and Jess Mariano (Milo Ventimiglia). The sweet Rory fell hard for bad-boy Jess. As it turned out these two had more in common than what was apparent on the surface. For starters, they both loved reading books. Unfortunately, Jess left Rory to go to California.

10. Party of Five: Bailey Salinger (Scott Wolf) and Sarah Reeves (Jennifer Love-Hewitt). If only Bailey had listened to all those ads about drinking and driving, he would still be together with Sarah. After an accident in which Bailey was driving and Sarah was in the passenger’s seat, the relationship practically went kaboom. At least Bailey cleaned up his act.
