I ordered mine last week, I think I'm going to end up with three versions by the time I've finished, but if the sales help keep Firefly alive in one form or another I don't mind at all!

I received my region 4 exclusive limited edition tin and all I can say is wow!
It's a very nice and heavy tin embossed with the two disc DVD case inside. I haven't watched the film yet but I did watch "Joss Whedon's Q&A Session - Filmed at Fox Studios in Sydney (exclusive to Australian DVD)" which was brilliant, funny and interesting lasting approximately 55 minutes. Admittedly I haven't heard the audio commentary(YET) but excluding that the Q & A session is by far my favourite extra on the Serenity DVD.
It says on the back of the packaging that the DVD is encoded region 2/region 4 in case anybody here still doesn't have a multi-region DVD player.
If you haven't already bought Serenity on DVD I would definitely recommend getting this Australian version and if you can get the EZYDVD.COM.AU exclusive tinned version, you won't regret it.

If I were you I would send them an e-mail asking if they intend to get more stock. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they do get more in. Even if they don't I would definitely recommend the Australian two-disc set with or without the tin

buffy_fan1 - February 18, 2006 02:11 PM (GMT)
Mine arrived last Friday it's great. :yahoo: I have a question, most dvds are in wide screen with a space at the up and bottom of the screen. However the picture on screen is even narrower then normal wide screen. Even when stretch the picture it still won't fill the whole screen. Is this normal or is there something wrong with my dvd/player? :stoopid:

Depends on the aspect ratio.
Full screen widescreen is 16x9 or 1.78:1
Most movies are 1.85:1 with bands at top and bottom
Some movies are as much as 2.39:1 which is quite a narrow picture even on a widescreen tv.

Sorry nerdy moment there :nerd: - not even sure if that's what you were talking about in the first place
Yay-For-Me - February 22, 2006 11:46 AM (GMT)
Huh!!!!!
Thanks for that, Paul
Just looked on the box and it says 2.35:1 Anamorphic Widescreen. Is that the cause of the narrow picture :ermm:

Thanks for that Paul, it's good to know there's is nothing wrong with the dvd. It's a shame the picture is so small, whats the point in making the picture that narrow? Is the picture any bigger on the region 2 disc?
star_fury - February 27, 2006 05:23 PM (GMT)
It's very doubtful that the region 2 would be any different to any other region. The point in making the picture so "narrow" is to make the picture look wider and more cinematic in the cinema.
I'm hesitant to tell you this because I personally think films should stay in their correct aspect ratio but I believe you can get a full screen version of the film on region 1 which would completely fill up a traditional full-screen TV/computer monitor...BUT... remember you would be losing some of the picture to make it full-screen. You would lose the sides of the image.
To save you the trouble and money you can probably alter your DVD settings to "pan and scan" rather than "letterbox" which would essentially do the same thing completely filling up your screen.

I don't see the pont in making picture cinematic after all unless to have a very expensive and BIG TV your never going to get the full effect anyway. So why not make picture more suitable for home viewing thats what DVDs are for. :ponder:
Thanks for the tip about my dvd player settings I'll give it a try

That's a point that has been flying around for years. In the States they often release two versions of dvds, one in widescreen and one full screen. On the one hand the studios have the cinephiles screaming for movies to be released in their theatrical ratio, on the other they've got the more casual viewers complaining about the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. Personally I think that full screen, pan and scan jobs can destroy the composition of the picture that the director was aiming for, and I'd rather have the widescreen version :)

I don't have a very big or expensive TV and the choice of either having a "not as the director intended it" / "missing part of the picture" full-screen version or a widescreen version isn't even a choice. I go widescreen every time and luckily in the UK you can only get the one version. :)
There are also other benefits to getting widescreen DVDs over full screen versions, as and when you get a widescreen television the picture quality on all new movies is superior. This is because of anamorphic widescreen also known as enhanced for widescreen TVs which basically includes twice as many horizontal lines when watched on a widescreen television.
