Title: The Christmas Invasion.

jamiearmour - December 26, 2005 12:08 AM (GMT)
So who watched it?

Full of wonderfull moments, the killer Christmas tree made me giggle myself silly (3 bottles of wine with Christmas lunch will do that to you   )

I felt that the Sycorax deserved more development, would an hour and a half special have been too much to ask for?

The Torchwood project, getting it's second mention in the show, and :o They've built a death star style weapon in the middle of London :o :o

Penelope Wilton really shone as Prime Minister Harriet Jones. I don't know who scared me more, the Sycorax, or her :fear:

David Tenant will have set any doubts to rest as to his ability to take over from the excellent Chris Eccleston though. The scenes he was in were brilliantly executed, sublime and gentle, then fierce and frenetic. All done in a pair of pyjamas, as he himself said, "it's very Arthur Dent"

Darris - December 26, 2005 01:08 AM (GMT)
I found David Tennant slightly disturbing as the Doctor. But i have just seen the latest Potter film and can't get his role in that out of my head.
I am still miffed they didn't use my suggestion of Anthony Head! :p
Still i heard AH's voice in the upcoming trailers.

Was Dr Who always cheesy? I can't really remember it as a kid.

smellyphagor - December 26, 2005 09:54 AM (GMT)
I'm not sure what you mean by cheesy in this context so I can't help you.

No just his voice- you got a shot of him looking extremely menacing- I must admit the trailers looked fab.

For me Doctor Who continues to be alright. I prefered the first have to the second of this one, mainly because I've seen a few sword fights before, you know, and sword fights done better as well.

Having said that it is worth remembering that it is mainly a kid's programme, and I suspect that I'd have loved it if I was eight.

Nice to see humans are evil at the end- nice subverting of the snow at Christmas thing.

Number Six - December 26, 2005 10:28 AM (GMT)
I already prefer Tennant to Eccleston. Much more faceted. To me CE was a bit one dimensional. He's very good at intense but that's about it.

Nice to see actors in dodgy makeup back again, as well :D

Loved the Arthur Dent line, sure Douglas Adams would be tickled pink.

goth willow fan - December 26, 2005 10:45 AM (GMT)
As I said in the "last watched" thread, I enjoyed it but I really wish they would get away from Rose's Mum and ex boyfriend.

Loved all the Harriet Jones, Prime Minister stuff.

Laura - December 26, 2005 01:45 PM (GMT)
It would have been nice to see more than half an hour of DT, but I suppose it allowed us to get used to him. Anyway, I loved it, and love DT too. At first I was a bit worried about not liking him as much as CE but once he exited the TARDIS I loved him. "I've got a bit of a gob on me" "Sorry, that's the Lion King"
and "Am I ginger, I've never been ginger". And him choosing his outfit and enjoying Christmas dinner with Rose and her family was nice.
Really, really looking forward to April now :yahoo:.

I thought Tennant was great in the role. :)

Loved the Lion King reference

As I said in the "last watched" thread, I enjoyed it but I really wish they would get away from Rose's Mum and ex boyfriend.

A violent and painful death would be good.

I thought it was ok, some good bits, prefer DT than CE who's idiocy always seemed forced.

I did think the aliens on the screen were gonna start singing Bohemian Rhapsody a couple of time. ;)

Me too, I said to my Dad they looked like they were going to form a Sycorax version of Queen.

Loved the scaffolding on Big Ben :lmao:

I was a bit worried in the first half hour that he was out of action for so long, and that we had to put up with soooo much of Rose's mum (the worst actress on the face of the planet, I'm convinced). But the second half was bloody marvellous, and very funny.

I already prefer Tennant to Eccleston

star_fury - December 27, 2005 01:47 PM (GMT)
I haven't read the thread for fear of being spoiled but can anybody tell me if this episode is repeated because I forgot to set my video and missed it :(

jamiearmour - December 27, 2005 01:52 PM (GMT)
It's repeated on New Years day on BBC3

Or you can watch it (with commentary track) on the beeb website right HERE

Absolutely Brilliant......

Tennant is fantastic and probably will end up being one of my favourite Doctor's.

He reminds me alot like Peter Davison my favourite doctor......wears a similar atire and the hands in the pockets. Also acts in a similar way...especially when the prime minister orders Torchwood to fire.....he reacts against her....reminded me of Davison at the end of the story Warriors Of The Deep.....'there should have been another way'.

Looking forward to the new series because the trailer look fasinating can't wait to see Sarah Jane Smith's reaction the the new doctor. And K9!

Cybermen looked great, still menacing from the small glipse....and more from the Face Of Boe.

But still I want to move more to plotlines involving the Doctor, his past, his present his future etc....please less Rose...the show is called Doctor Who for pete's sake and there was too much Rose! Can we remember Russell T Davies the companions come and go it's the Doctor that always remains a constant and relying too much on Rose, her 'boyfriend' and mum in the series will only alienate new viewers epsecially younger viewers from the series when Billie Piper eventually leaves.

And hopefully with the upcoming Sarah Jane and K9 episode the series will start to move in this direction.

Not much to add after everyone else's comments! I loved it too. A big  to David Tennant. I was a bit surprised he'd got the gig as, at that time, I hadn't really heard of him, but he was great! I'm sure after a few episodes, he'll be surpassing CE.

Lol at the Sycorax/Queen comments :lmao:

Really looking forward to season 2 now... should be great, the trailer was intriguing. Tony Head did look menacing, didn't he... should be great. and  for Sarah Jane Smith, and a shudder at K9... he gives me the creeps when I see him in the UK Gold re-runs. I can't see how I liked him back then, but hey, I was 10/11 I think so it is excusable!

Looking forward to watching it again, soon!

What he said.

I much prefer Tennant. He's more of what I would expect The Doctor to be.
More idiosyncrantic, quirky and stylish - Top jacket!

And a Scot too!

oh i'm the lone voice of dissension :whistling:

after re watching the first season ,that I recorded over the Christmas period, I was very disappointed with this Christmas special. :(

I wasn't very impressed with the new Doctor and the episode as a whole left me cold. I suppose I will withhold judgment on Tennant until I've seen a few new episodes especially since he wasn't in all that much of the episode, awake anyway . In my opinion he has very big shoes to fill as no matter what I thought of the episodesof S1 I always thought Christopher Eccleston did a very good job in the role.

I would have thought that for a Christmas special the BBC would pull out all the stops. Sadly it wasn't the case here. The only good thing I can think about the episode was Torchwood being mentioned whetting our appetites for that new spin-off series.

after ep 2, Dalek, Empty Child double ep, Bad Wolf and Parting Of The Ways this was quite poor.

strangely I enjoyed the Christmas interactive digital TV quiz a lot more than the episode. Did anybody else play it on Christmas Day?

... Now don't forget if you turnover to ITV the planet will implode !

I quite liked David Tennant's Doctor, but Christopher Eccleston really did play the character uniquely. David's portrayal seems to be a bit of a Tom Baker half-copy, which is a shame. If he does try and go head to head with the portrayals of Tom Baker and especially Patrick Troughton - he'll lose out and I won't be that impressed. As you said, we'll have to wait and see.

The problem with this episode's length is that it was bound to be a typical 45 minute episode type of story, given a little bit more depth. That's what 'The Christmas Invasion' was.

I did play it and it was OK. It had some major compatibility issues with several Freeview boxes though. Yes, I did like that line at the end

now be honest Dan, did you put your remote control up towards the screen as directed by the doctor so he could adjust it with his sonic screwdriver at the beginning and at the end so he could turn it back ? :ponder:

I'm not sure where to discuss tonights episode. Are we classing this years Christmas Invasion as the beginning of season three?

Phillip Culley - December 26, 2006 03:13 AM (GMT)
Since there's no Series 3 board at the moment (I'm just about to sort it out!), I'll set up a new one here, and shove it over once the Series 3 board is ready :)
