Title: Nintendo Ds

Dan Brown - December 17, 2005 08:09 PM (GMT)
Got myself one for christmas from HMV with Mario cart and king kong.

And as always I have to 'test' it before the big day.

Thought Mario Cart DS was excellent but didn't think much of King Kong though.

My brother got one as well (and he had to test his today as well) so we did some picto chat but his and mine both have lit pixels, he has two large ones (probably a few lit ones lumped together) on the touch screen and I have a medium size one on the touch screen as well.

Does anyone know how to get rid of them? Has anyone got a DS without them? If my brother have lit pixels it seems that it might be quite common. and I don't want to take it back to HMV in the christmas rush, to just get another DS with lit pixels.

On a lighter note does any one recommend any good games?

I think I read somewhere that Nintendo has a zero tolerance on lit and missing pixels?

With a small number of Nintendo DS screens, one or two dots on the screen may appear to be "stuck" on a particular color, such as white or red. This effect is caused when a particular pixel (the dots that make up the screen) is not w**king properly. Even with the high quality standards set by LCD manufacturers, you will find this situation is common in many LCD devices (PC monitors, televisions, cell phones, etc.), and is within LCD manufacturers' specifications.

It's important to understand that this issue will remain limited to the pixels you have already noticed. The problem will not get any worse and you should not expect to see the problem in any other areas of the screen.
We suggest you use your system for a few weeks to determine whether this interferes with your enjoyment of game play. If, after using your system for awhile, you feel that this tiny dot is too distracting, the Nintendo DS does carry a one-year warranty. We are happy to inspect and, if necessary, fix your system at no charge within the warranty period.

That's for the US but I'd imagine it's the same deal :01:

My brother has a DS with Mario 64 and karts, both good games - also noticed that Black & Whites coming out for it, should be quality :)

I've always been a fan of Nintendo from the day I got my original Game Boy but I can't decide wether to buy a DS? I bought a PSP which is great and don't know if a DS will just look poor by comparison, any thoughts?

Yeah I'm going out to get Mario 64 for it tomorrow......whatever you do don't get King Kong on it, it's awful. But it was free so....

And I'm taking my brothers DS back to HMV, to get him a new one, hopefully with no dead pixels - fingers crossed.

And if he gets a perfect one I might take mine back as well....haven't made my mind up on how distacting it is......

I got it for 6 reasons.....

1. My brother was getting one.
2. Free Online play....Mario Kart 64 is brill
3. The touch screen is an amazing gimic.
4. I like Mario, Zelda games etc
5. It was cheaper than a PSP....I got mine for £79.99 (HMV games reward redemption).
6. FREE GAME - King Kong (which is rubbish)

So I suppose it really counts on what games you like PSP has more adult orientated games (liberty city stories). And MP3, and UMD.

But I prefer DS, cheaper, and the touch screen is really fun....I would recommend...

When PSP goes down to £80 I might get one of them as well.....(and if some more action games come out instead of all these Racing games)

I bought a DS in the summer, and still play it, which says something for my limited attention span.

I have
  • WarioWare Touched (excellent for touch screen eg drawing ski slopes, chopping vegetables, poking kittens...
  • Project Rub (bit like Wario, but with minigames such as vomiting goldfish, shouting at a girl then later unbuttoning her top...)
  • Nintendogs:dacshund & Friends (Recommended if you like dogs. You get to stroke, feed and walk them, exploit their frisbee skills for profit then donate them for a better breed if necessary. But its scarce at the moment, unless you like ebay prices)
  • Another Code: Two Memories (an RPG anime game thing. You solve puzzles using all of the DS' features. Interesting plot too)
  • Rayman DS (okay, if you're REALLY stuck for games. Awkward controls though, and if you've got Rayman 2 the great escape, don't bother, its just a DS remake)
  • Animaniacs Lights camera Action (actually, this is pretty bad, with no DS features used at all. I ebayed it not long after purchase to some other unfortunate gamer....does that make me evil?)

I'm pretty picky when it comes to games. I probably won't buy another until Animal Crossing comes out.

Haven't had any problems with lit pixels

To be honest I don't think the DS has really got going yet. The touch screen is a great idea, but most games I've played haven't really used it to full advantage yet (unless they're gimicky mini-game ones like Warioware Touched, which is great in small bursts). Give it time and I think developers will really start to innovate with it.

The irony is that I've been using it more to play GBA games than DS ones, because the screen is brighter than the GBA SP, and since I've had the Micro I haven't used either of those

Yes you are quite right the SP screen unless you are playing in the dark is smetimes hard to see especially with the sun glaring through your window.....but the DS screen is much brighter.....

Just about to take my brothers DS back........damn you lit pixels......

Isn't the consumer right here though, surely it isn't that hard to make sure there are no lit pixels on screens so small.

Come on I've got a SONIC brand TFT for my computer which is obviously not a good make...but still its only got one lit pixel on the far edge of the screen and it's 17"!!

Surely they can produced 4" or whatever size they are screens without lit pixels!

OK....one tip don't buy your DS from HMV....they won't replace for dead pixels.

And they are full of BS as well.....

'Nintendo doesn't see dead pixels as a fault....yada...yada'

So I tried to explain to them that on their website they say they would replace...to no avail'

So I rang nintendo up and they said that they would replace the machine....but I would have to go to the trouble of sending it off yada, yada. And I asked whether the shops would take them back and he said it depends on the shop and I for one am surprised that HMV wouldn't take it back and swap it for another. I could understand if it was a smaller chain or a private shop but HMV?

I should go back in their and show them the webpage......and tell them what nintendo said and say well HMV's return policy is rubbish compared to every other shop in the land.

Did you speak to the Manager, I'd go for a full on complaint :ermm:

No lit pixels on my DS. I have to admit most of the games we play on it are GBA ones, haven't bought that many DS ones, I took one of the Mario games back as it was

I do like the touch screen but don't use it that often really as normal controls are easier

HMV seem to be crap and overpriced for everything, unless you really badly want three of last years top films for £20 (or whatever) there's not much point going in :ermm:

Gamestation seem to be the cheapest for all game related media, their website seems to be just as good too, ordered a few cube games from them in the past and had no trouble, you can buy used from them online too.

Game is bad also, they seem to add three or four pounds on to any new game compared to Gamestation, they're just as bad as the Electronic Boutique days.

I've emailed a complaint.....see what happens from there.....otherwise I might try taking it back after christmas......because its TEMP hell out there you'll never get any decent help in shops at all....

Also there's always the fact that we might end up with DS's with even worse screens.

Seems everything I buy has a lit pixel.....I went through about 4 SP's until I got one without one.

The technology isn't quite there......and how can you justify lit pixels on such small screens its a joke in my opinion.

And it does seem unfair consumerism when one person pays for an item for the same price as another person and they get a flawless DS whereas others get lit/dead pixels just because they are unlucky....to be within the 0.01%. And for me and my brother both to have the problem is almost improbable.

Is everyone certain they don't have a lit pixel? Cause It would seem to me that it must be quite common for me and my brother to both get iffy machines.

Or maybe we a just fussy, would anyone take their DS back due to lit pixels?

Mine doesn't have that problem...and I got mine from HMV....

If it was just one or two, then probably not, but if they were large like the ones your brother's DS has got then I definitely would.

I'd suggest phoning HMV's customer services, seeing what they say, and if they agree with you get them to phone the branch and tell them to have a new one waiting for you when you get there.

Thanks, I might try that it's a good idea but I think my brother can't be bothered now he just wants to play with the thing for christmas....

I emailed HMV, and they basically said sorry for the misunderstanding about the returns policy of Nintendo....and that the manager of the store has been told to tell the staff that Nintendo does acknoweldge this fault and will replace....and then said to contact Nintendo about a replacement!

So it looks like they won't replace, so now I have to pay for two (if I want a perfect screen as well) DS's to be sent to Nintendo!

I must have been extremely unlucky as only a small amount of units are effected apparently to get two DS's with this problem and this is shown by these boards no-one else has dead/lit pixels!

So I sent another email stating that if one of the DS's had this problem I would just send it to Nintendo, but I feel that it is unacceptable that 2 units from their store bought by me have this problem and that they should replace!

On a postive note I bought Polarium and project rub from GAME for £9.98 each!!! And I've bought Mario 64 DS - EXCELLENT GAME!
