That is absolutely brilliant prophecy girl
I must admit I am really struggling when it comes to a top 110 as I do not know the episodes very well especially from S3 onwards whereas with Buffy the episodes are generally so memorable, the basic themes at least. S4 is so unified I am not sure how I would rate the main bulk of those at all. A great deal of S5 would prop up the lower regions of the chart no doubt.
Five by five, Reunion and Sleep Tight would almost certainly be in my top 10. I doubt You're Welcome or Hero would be in my top 10. Guise will be Guise certainly would not be. Eternity seems very low down to me too.
I would rate Disharmony, certainly, and Supersymmetry, probably, above a great deal of the weaker episodes of later seasons.
Even though I do not know the later seasons very well your list more or less feels right.
I am fired to do my own list but I would really need to rewatch the whole lot to do the series justice. I will do a preliminary top 10 that are subject to change no doubt.
1 Five by Five 2 Reunion 3 Not Fade Away 4 Reprise 5 Sleep Tight 6 Habeas Corpses 7 Smile Time 8 Redefinition 9 I Will Remember You 10 Somnambulist

I was a bit ahead of myself there. It was probably something to do with looking back and forth between your post and my post.
I am still not sure what my worst episode will be though certainly not Happy Anniversary. One of the early episodes in S5 maybe or perhaps Why We Fight or even The Girl in Question. sk
prophecy girl - December 11, 2005 08:15 PM (GMT)
science and angelverse doesn't mix well, imo ... (hence happy anniversary being number 110)
the girl in question: well there are some good (and some funny) scenes and well wes/"fred" in LA but the main plot was not a great idea and probably too late in the season (if you compare to the season arc)

The science aspect has never worried me in the same way that early Star Trek was not really about science Buffy and Angel are not either. I have always felt the storytelling of Happy Anniversary worked pretty well.
I will allow myself one more grumble. Are you seriously saying The Bachelor Party is better than Apocalypse Nowish, Billy, The Prodigal or Untouched? sk

Wow! You have been having massive thoughts...can't wait to settle down and ponder your results- but don't seem to have much brain a the mo, after all the Big Marking of the last couple of weeks. Watching some series 4 seems to be helping with my rehabilitation- and tidying my room comes next- there appears to be a developing alliance between randomly discarded socks and a heap of junk mail which together are lurching towards to box of series 3 that is waiting to go to Surrey at the weekend. When I've dealt with the where's-the-floor-gone crisis, I'll have a nice long read. Thanks for providing the incentive.

Much congratulations PG!
You better get started on the 2006 list soon!

Question: your all time no. 1 is Not Fade Away, why? I been watching all s. 5 this week, and saw it again last night - my overwhelming feeling is that everything in it it great, but it is lumbered with the implications that anything that isn't dedalt with in it might never be...and I end up with a nasty attack of the 'yes, but...'s.
prophecy girl - December 18, 2005 06:55 PM (GMT)
it's a great finale, imo

I agree. It deserves a top ranking. :)

grrrarrrgh - December 29, 2005 10:19 AM (GMT)
In my top 3 too. Leaves so many unanswered questions but that's good. It would have been all too easy for Joss to tie up any loose ends and risk leaving Angel finishing flat. This way, it ends with another day at the office - all be it a huge, evil office with flying monsters and stuff!!! :lmao:
Gawd, i really could not do a top 110, I'd struggle to sort most of the Firefly episodes into fave order, so kudos to you

I still have too much free time so I have been spending most of today faffing about with Excel trying to see what your rankings suggest prophecy girl.
S1,S2,S3,S5,S4
Your rankings suggest you enjoy all the seasons with some feelings of equality. Unbelievably to me they suggest you enjoy S5 more than S4 which seems highly unlikely. Possibly it could be that the very high rankings of a few brilliant S5 episodes especially You're Welcome, Smile Time and Not Fade Away have tilted the balance. Individual rankings do not really reflect the sheer class of S4. sk

I liked how Angel ended but I doubt I'd put Not Fade Away in my top 20, there's just loads of eps I enjoyed more than it.
prophecy girl - December 31, 2005 11:31 AM (GMT)
maybe it was because it was the last episode i watched (obviously  ) before starting the top 110 but that doesn't mean if i was going to re-do the all thing that this episode wouldn't be in the top 20 (maybe not as number 1 but still it is a fantastic finale episode :p )
/next year, i will wait a little while before the last episode and starting the poll  :ponder:

Desperately trying to remember which one was Happy Anniversary...and why it got the bottom gig...
Awwww- be nice to Girl in Question - I like it very lots. Take away the antepenultimortality of it, what's not to like in and of itself? Surely not the -blokes regard the Godfather as sacrosanct- riff?
So much genius misdirection going on, Angel in vile sport wear is a massive hoot and holds my 'cheapest laugh' ever award (at least for today) - much poking fun at the contrary ingrate Geller, and a complete rearguard demolition of the toxic cookie dough crap...

Happy Anniversary was the amusing science fiction leaning episode where the scientist is trying to freeze time and Angel is out to stop him. Pretty enjoyable AS2 silliness it seems to me. I prefer it to say Blood money or The Thin Dead Line.
I need to watch all of the last three seasons again to see what I think but AS5 was a bit patchy if enjoyable. sk

Silly me- THAT one- of course. Watched it over New Year as part of a s. 2 marathon with a newbie viewer and incidental scientist. Never realised that a genuine physicist would be compelled to seize the reomte and freeze-frame all the formulae and furrow the brow alterately going 'hmmm' and grrrr'.
He's going to ardore Fred- but he may be stuck with the equations in her cave for the best park of a year before he lets himself move on- any scientists out there with helpful suggestions?

Couldn't have hidden the remote - contravention of lifetime friendship treaty (and loss of Brownie hostess badge I suspect....)
OK- you want SPELLING on Sundays?
Actually just had e-mail from him- now seent he Pylea episodes we ran out of time for- 'the thinking scientists' fantasy woman' was indeed his view. But a bit concerned about the Texan aspect, I think.
Come to think- you think she went to school with Lindsey?

I was thinking more like Fred in her cherub infancy -although what they put in her bottle to cause her to see aliens then - perhaps alien babies- would have been a bit worrying...
Perhaps by 17 Fred had progressed to hiding in wardrobes, and we all know where THAT leads....

Great stuff. I am still 'working' on mine at least cerebrally. My memory of most of S3 onwards is terrible. This means I cannot be as critical as I would like to be.
I am sympathetic to you shunting Not Fade Away very slightly even though it is very memorable.
I still feel you are very harsh on Untouched, Disharmony and especially Lonely Heart. Untouched is brilliantly dark. Disharmony has two absolutely priceless jokes especially the ludicrously silly pyramid scam. Lonely Heart is a tremendous introduction to the world of Angel with an unusual take on feeling alienated in the big city with a fine fantasy twist. sk

My inner nerd is jumping for joy.
I never did manage to do the requisite rewatch to refresh my memory about S3 onwards. Even with the more memorable S1 and S2 my recall is not exactly perfect. In other words I need a complete rewatch. Another problem is do I need S4/AS1 and S5/AS2 to make it all feel right. My inner nerd says yes but practicality says no.
I am happy(pun intended) you are less harsh on Happy Anniversary. I feel it is delightfully silly.
I am sympathetic to I Fall To Pieces being last as the story feels like a script that was rejected from The X-Files for being too naff by half.
Wow I just noticed First Impressions has dropped from 48 to 98 and I have to say I totally agree. Not one of the best of S2.
I still feel you are being quite ruthlessly exacting about Lonely Heart but I think I understand where you are coming from. My personal feeling is it is a tiny bit special but very special in having the best music certainly in Angel but quite possibly in Buffy too. When She Was Bad pushes it close though.
I have too much freetime but I am glad you have too.sk
