Title: Anachronistic Accents?

Ok, doubt if anyone remembers me- I slightly fell off the edge of the earth a while back (had to try various combinations of possible screennames and passwords to log in ). Anyway... Firefly- wooh! Serenity- wooh! Its all manner of goodness! :yahoo:

This isn't really a complaint, more of a pondering, do you think the accents sported by the characters are anachronistic? The fact that they switch between English and Mandarin suggests that before the destruction(?) of Earth China became important, but since Earth is no longer inhabited should characters have differing accents, eg Badger's English accent that make sense now to us?

It seems that Joss et al made a conscious effort to consider what the world would be like in the future (for example the possible bilingualism- the commonality of Mandarin suggests that China becomes the next superpower, or at least very important).

What do you think? :)

welcome back! :hibye:

I liked the back story and the US/China thing. The thing is though I don't recall there being too many accents. You mention Badger and there is also the operative but most have the wild west twang.

:)

Perhaps different nationalities, intially at least, emigrated to the same planet, resulting in some aspects of distinct cultures being retained. :ponder:

I saw an interesting question posed somewhere ( might of been the subject of an essay in a Firefly / Serenity book I flicked through once in the Forbidden Planet  ) which was seeing as Mandarin is used so much indicating that China did become a / the Superpower where are all the Chinese people ? I don't recall seeing that many in Firefly or Serenity. :ponder:

On the subject of accents I think the guy who tortured Mal & Wash in War Stories had some sort of Euro trash accent.
