Anyone else remember Sledge Hammer from when it was shown on late night ITV in the late 80s? Even from memory I recall the jokes being very hit and miss.
I saw the boxsets in HMV the other day and wondered if anyone else had bought them. I never saw the second season either. sk
Yeah I remember it - I do remember it as patchy but on whole funny - possibly alcohol assists helped.
I bought the Season 1 boxsets not too long ago. Watching the shows could be a chore sometimes. Just as the show is a satire of the Dirty Harry movies, every episode seemed to to satirize another movie (eg, WITNESS). It seemed like too easy a way to come up with a episode plot. And the over-the-top style didn't w**k for all the jokes.
The DVD set I have has the laugh-tracks removed -- because, as the creator, Alan Spencer, points on in a funny introduction to the boxset: the show was a drama. :D
There's commentary and behind-the-scenes documentary with recent interviews of the actors (Anne-Marie Martin has held up the best).
I always thought it amusing that they were so convinced that they were going to get cancelled that the season finale had sledge.....unsuccessfully defuse a nuclear bomb, destroying LA in the process. Caused a few problems when it was unexpectedly renewed.
I hadn't known about the outcome of the last episode, so it came as a surprise to me. It makes me think that thinking renewal and being cancelled is better than thinking cancellation and getting renewed. At least a was a comedy. Altho...the destruction of LA would be positive for the British entertainment industry. :ponder:
