ABC's 'Alias' To End Run After 5 Years

"Alias," the ABC espionage drama starring Jennifer Garner as a sexy, globe-trotting secret agent, will end its prime-time run in May after five seasons on the air, the network said on Wednesday.

No reason was given for bringing the series to a close, but the show has declined sharply in the ratings since moving to a tougher time slot on Thursdays this season opposite the CBS reality hit "Survivor: Guatemala."

"Alias" also has undergone a creative make-over this season as producers wrote the real-life pregnancy of Garner into the show's story line.

It was not immediately clear what role, if any, Garner's impending motherhood played in the decision to conclude the series at the end of its fifth season. The Houston-born actress, 33, is married to Hollywood star Ben Affleck, her co-star in the 2003 comic book movie "Daredevil."

In a statement announcing the move, ABC Entertainment President Stephen McPherson and executive producer Jeff Pinkner promised fans that the show would "rev up" for the remainder of the season as it heads for a climactic finale.

Garner has earned four back-to-back Emmy Award nominations for her role as super spy Sydney Bristow, a master of disguise who has chased terrorists and dodged danger in hot spots around the world, even finding time for occasional romance.

The CIA was so impressed by her character that Garner was enlisted last year to film a recruitment video for the agency on its employment Web site.

"Alias" enjoyed its biggest ratings success last season in a plum Wednesday night time slot following ABC's hit castaway thriller "Lost." But the show has struggled this fall on Thursday nights against "Survivor," averaging 7 million viewers a week, down from 10.3 million last season, according to Nielsen Media Research.

By comparison, "Survivor" tallied nearly 19 million viewers last week, giving Viacom Inc.-owned CBS control of its hour. ABC is a unit of the Walt Disney Co.

<_<

From the little I`ve heard about this S5 - in accidental spoilage :tear: - I can`t say I`m surprised. :(

If the timeslot was the problem , I think they`d have moved the show. But that`s just my thinking, I haven`t seen any of the series, and maybe I`ll be all  once it starts again on Bravo. :ponder:

Without any spoiling, what do the people who`ve seen the first few eps think ?

willowroolz - November 24, 2005 12:12 PM (GMT)
If they'd said after season 2 that the series was to end I would've been gutted, but after seasons 3 and 4 I can't say that I'm either surprised or disappointed, unfortunately

Outta Sight - November 24, 2005 01:14 PM (GMT)
Ditto :D I'm not surprised and I'm not really too upset either  I just hope we still get to see lots of lovely Greg Grunberg in something else

Can't say I'm really surprised tbh, TWW is another show that I'm expecting to end this year too.

Go on, treat yourself to a multi-region DVD player and get those Felicity DVDs.... You know you want to.... :naughty: :lmao: And can I borrow them ?

Hmm, we all seem to be really broken up about this news, don`t we ? ;)

I watched E!News earlier, and the news on Alias being cancelled wasn`t even in their headlines - it was 6 or 7 mins into the show and didn`t even merit a clip.

I'll certainly be sad to see it go, but at least it will have run to 5 seasons, which is better than the treatment some other shows get. And having only seen up to the end of season 3, at least I have another 2 seasons worth of episodes to prepare myself for the end.

Yup, in terms of the treatment of some other shows, I suppose we`re lucky that they`ve decided to finish the season.

It's probably for the best... infact, would've liked it to finish before now :ermm:

Im :tear: about it finishing, but without Syd it wouldnt be the same so I think its a good place to stop. Ill live through fanfiction or something

Five seasons is long enough for a show like Alias IMO. There's only so many plotlines they can run before it loses credibility.

Not really sad or surprised tbh and after S4 I was kinda hoping S5 would be the last. Just hope they go out with a bang. :)

Dan Brown - November 26, 2005 10:58 PM (GMT)
Suppose it had to happen at some point and after 5 years and still 2 seasons I have yet to see so I'm happy.

And season 1 and 2 will go down in history (in my book) as one of the greatest pieces of TV storytelling ever. Season 3 was still excellent but wasn't sure where it was going....and the whole shift away from SD-6 and Sloane for the most w**king for the CIA was hard to get used to....

I just hope the series ends on a high and they finally explain the significance of Milo Rambaldi......if they haven't already in season 4.....

....plus please JJ end it properly......

"'Alias' is not going to wind down as it comes to an end, it's going to rev up, and we're going to make it the event it deserves to be," ABC Entertainment President Stephen McPherson said in a statement.

Well acording to this statement, it looks like they're going to make it a big ending so fingers crossed we get all the answers we're looking for.

i guess the writers were running out of idea around rambaldi but they could have turned the story in an other direction after the end of SD6 :ponder:

Fans Rally To Save Alias

ABC has announced that the current fifth season of its spy series Alias will be its last, but not if fans have anything to say about it. Fans of the Jennifer Garner show have rallied at the Save Alias and Alias Undercover Web sites to campaign to keep the show on the air.

Organizers are first asking fans to mail brown paper bags inscribed "Save Alias" to Stephen McPherson, head of the network's prime-time programming unit, this month. Next month, the fans are asked to write letters. They are also writing to series creator J.J. Abrams to persuade him to find a new home for the show.

Alias has ranked 75th among all prime-time series since moving to a new timeslot this year at 8 p.m. ET/PT Thursdays. The show will be going on hiatus while Garner goes on maternity leave, returning with a countdown to the series finale in May.

same here. I was so into Alias after the second season and even hearing now it's cancelled after its 5th. I can honestly say I'm not really bothered after seeing season three and four. If only we could go back in time to when Sydney woke up in Hong Kong (is that right? I know it was somewhere in Asia) and start again with season three and four.

I really don't see the point Garner won't be interested....as this now breaks her contract with the show and all the other stars might be interested but can any of them actually be the star?

I think the show has ended and 5 seasons is quite a modest amount for a series so really there is no point in campaigning to save the show.

As long as they end the show properly without a cliff hanger and we can all go to sleep after it has aired without any nagging plot holes and answered questions then I will be happy with 5 seasons of ALIAS.

(P.S. JJ can Will Tippin come back for the finale?)

If that is true than that is ridiculous!

Please let JJ finish a Full season properly!

Kudz - February 28, 2006 08:01 PM (GMT)
It hasn't been cut short.

Admittedly Season 5 is shorter than previous seasons, but this has been widely known for a long time. In fact it's been the case since the announcement of this being the last season. There are a couple of articles today which make out like it's only just been cut, but this isn't the case. Since it went on hiatus we've known there is only 7 episode's (8 hours) to go.

Alias will still go out on a high with a big finale which ties up loose ends.
