"So, why don't we go out and say hi?" Rose was curious to meet the Doctor in his first form.
"We can't...para...."
"...dox."Rose finished. She remembered the bacteria that had appeared when she'd saved her father from being hit by a car. A cold shudder went down her spine at the thought.
"I could go?"
The Doctor's eyes widened. "No! You go out there and exchange 'nice weather for it' greetings means then we've already met. Could cause all sorts of complications. No, I'll get the Tardis moving again."
On the monitor, a young girl appeared and spoke to the Doctor with some sort of urgency. Both of them hurried to what Rose assumed was the Tardis before it became stuck as a police box.
"Who's the girl with you...him?"
The Doctor looked at the monitor, a deep sadness in his eyes as he watched them disappear into the Tardis.
"Susan."
Rose looked at him for as if waiting for some grand story. It never came. Resigned to just knowing her name, Rose continued to watch the monitor.
"So where are you two off then?" She imagined onto some great space station like the Doctor had first taken her, or off to fight some great battle.
The room was silent. Almost as if all the enegry had drained from him, the Doctor sat down and stared off into space. "I'm home...actually home. I could stop it, you know..."
Rose walked round the console to where the Doctor sat. She had seen that look before, but not on the Doctor. It was her, back in 1987.
"The Time War. I could prevent it."
"But you said..." That was as far as Rose got. The Doctor leaped up out of his seat and ran back round to the monitor, began playing around with displays and pulling levers. It was almost as if something had taken hold of him. The power began to build, the engines throbbed their usual whoorrrmmpphh noise.
Rose didn't know whether to stop him or help him. Ok, so he knew what he wa doing, but this seemed almost an obsession.
"Doctor, you said you couldn't.." Rose ran to be beside him, placing a hand on his arm. "Doctor!"
The Doctor, eyes on the monitor, let go of the controls and the engines ground to a rusty halt. Rose breathed a sigh of relief.
"Let's just go...You still have to take me Barcelona." Rose smiled,
The Doctor never looked away at the monitor. "We can't go anywhere."
"Why?" Rose leaned over to look at the monitor and froze. Impossible!
Moments after the Tardis outside, the one with the old man and young girl, had dematerilised, something was moving in it's exact spot. Something large, metal and it was looking right at them.
The Doctor looked like he was about to burst into tears, but the strained look on his face held it all back. Outside, the metal machine seemed to know it was being watched and moved forward.
"Doc...tor!" The amplified voice echoed around the Tardis as if spoken by some great and awful spirit.
"What's happening?" Rose was frozen with fear.
"Dear Rose...I think I may have just accelerated Time."
