| Stardate: Unknown Nog and Jake are rescued by the U.S.S. Valiant when their ship is attacked by the Dominion while on their way to Ferenginar. The crew of the Valiant consists of the Starfleet Cadet corps known as 'Red Squad,' an elite band of cadets, after the main crew were killed when the Dominion War broke out. They decide to complete their mission, which Jake sees as suicide. |

I really can't see the point in this one. What's the point in having a crew so far up their own arses that you have nothing but contempt for them and then killing them and trying to have a 'but were they heroes or idiots' bit at the end <_<
Couldn't they just have Jake mutter tossers and walk off instead of the fairly nauseating end scene

This could have been fantastic - a lone Defiant clone out on the outskirts kicking Dominion arse with a loose cannon captain.
Instead, they had some nauseating little students who got (un)lucky and ended up abandoned without any trained Starfleet members with a captain who's a pill popper.
The thing I never understand, though, is surely this whole field commission mallarkey is a bit suspect - surely Nog, officially the highest ranked officer, should have taken command? It would have made for a much better story - Nog, the fast-tracked ensign suddenly finds himself in command of the Valiant with an inexperienced crew in dangerous territory...
Still, I love the scene at the end, where after an episode full of imposters on what's technically the Defiant we get to see the proper crew back where they belong :)

The Definat gets blown up, in style. :)
A bunch of uptight pig-headed cadets get slaughtered, in style.
Okay, so you have to sit through the dregs of the whole story, but it's interesting to see how Red Squad seems to have a very religious/cult-like attitude... plus you've got to feel sorry for poor Jake being stuck in there when he really, REALLY wants to be away from all the up-their-arse cadets.
And I wasn't crying on the final scene. :)

Sorry, thought it was dreadful <_<

Never one of my favourite episodes, but not one of the worst. Very, very, average IMO.
On the bright side, the annoying Red Squaders get it!
