BBC Two controller Roly Keating said Saddam's story was a "key epic drama". The series, which does not yet have a transmission date, will focus on the lives of Saddam's closest family and an elite few and charts the "rise and fall of one of the world's most terrifying regimes". The series is written and directed by Alex Holmes, whose credits include Dunkirk, Coup and Every Time You Look At Me. The BBC said the series will be set against the backdrop of the larger tragedy of the Iraqi people, drawing out the story of the Middle East's relationship with the West.
