| Buffy returns to Comics, Whedon Updates Projects From Comicbookresources.com - By Jonah Weiland - 2005-11-10 There’s no doubt that Buffy The Vampire slayer fans are very happy fans indeed, today. Series creator Joss Whendon informed fans that he’ll be writing a new "Buffy" series for Dark Horse Comics and shared updates on a number of other projects, including "Wonder Woman," "Spike," "Astonishing X-Men" and "Serenity". Whedon wrote: And now on to the rumors and allegations section. Many of you want to know what the future holds. Anxiety, hurricanes, and Male Pattern Baldness. But maybe also some art-stuff, which is really what you guys are into. No, I don’t know anything about sequels, or spinoffs, or Nathan’s President for Life gig. I’ll keep my ear to the ground of course, but for now I’m just going to rest on my laurels (I have two). Oh! Oh! But I will tell you that Brett and I are talking about another three part comic, and it’s gonna be a hoot. Takes place during the show, and has some sweet character deaths — I mean moments! ("And what brings you to our ship, FutureTara..?") Sorry. Horrible taste. (Empty inside!) But wait’ll you see the cover... Speaking of Darkhorse Comics, they are starting a new Buffy comic, and as I understand it, it will take place after the end of Buffy and Angel and be canon in the Buffy world. And I understand it that way ’cause I’M WRITING IT. I’m kicking off the book with a four issue arc that finds Buffy — you guessed it — living in Italy with The Immortal. (Scott — don’t be mad I spoiled the announcement — saying it means I have to finish it.) Then I’ll be overseeing the book more closely, to make sure it remains true. Gonna be interesting. And it just might tie in to... The infamous Spike movie. Still haven’t finalized anything, but I feel that very soon I’ll be able to go to James and say something a lot more interesting than "Wouldn’t it be cool if..." ’Course, I just hope he’s free some time this decade. See how my peeps is all actifying! Tomorrow night is AMIAS, (that’s alias with Acker in it.) Happy. And totally jealous. See, the Buffyverse glows in my brain with a new, overreaching arc that will include the comics, Spike, and more. It’s taking shape and soon you will know its name. And you will tremble. Then of course there’s a little thing called X-Men, who are apparantly supposed to become astonishing again real soon. I miss me my Cassiday. Can’t wait to see the fan response when I kill Wolverine and replace him with fan-fave Marrow. Well, I certainly can’t say much more, except that Wonder Woman is finally kicking ass that is not my ass, as in, I’m loving this script. She’s saving the world in a tiara, people; this is why there’s a me! Oh, and there’s nothing on TV tonight. TV has been cancelled. Talk amongst yourselves. La la la la la... :) |

Each issue will be presented by a different creative team. First up, Peter David (Spike: Old Times) and Nicola Scott focus on Illyria-a goddess without worshippers, existing in a world not her own, surrounded by humans whose emotions she is trying to comprehend. This first issue features covers from Nicola Scott, Zach Howard, Russell Walks, and Steph Stamb. $3.99 • FC • 32 pages SPIKE: LOST AND FOUND Scott Tipton (w); Fernando Goni (a & c) There’s a vampire preying on the citizens of Los Angeles-nothing new for Spike and company, right? | Angel Spotlight: Doyle Jeff Mariotte (w), David Messina (a), Messina, Walks, Stamb, Jeff Johnson © Before Angel hit L.A., there were plenty of demons around. One of them was named Doyle, a half-human, half-Brachen demon with personal problems galore. When Angel got to town, Doyle was entrusted by The-Powers-That-Be with guiding his quest for atonement–but with difficulties of his own to atone for, what made TPTB think he was the right, er... half-man for the job? Written by Angel novelist Jeff Mariotte (Angel: Old Friends) with art by his Angel: Old Friends partner David Messina. ------------------ Angel Scriptbook #5: “Five by Five” Jeff Kouf (w), Jeff Johnson (a & c) Continuing with monthly illustrated scriptbooks based on the very best Angel episodes pulled from its five-season run. | From Fractalmatter.com - By Webmaster - 2006-04-4 Angel Comics - "Angel Spotlight : Illyria" - Fractalmatter.com Review Angel Writer: Peter David Artist: Nicola Scott Publisher: IDW Publishing Price: $3.99 First of all I should say that I am not a Buffy/Angel expert. I’ve seen maybe half of all the Buffy episodes, and certainly less than that of Angel. The reasons for me reviewing an advance copy of this new book from IDW were wholly centred around the creative team attached to it, namely Peter David and Nicola Scott. Illyria Having read this issue, I have to say that my interest in seeking out other Buffy-related comics has risen considerably, as has my enthusiasm to actually watch all those Whedon vampire related episodes I haven’t gotten around to yet. As the title suggests, this comic focuses on the character of Illyria, the demon that resides in the body of Fred, the girl that Wesley loved. Peter David does a wonderful job of conveying Illyria’s personality and understanding (or lack) of her surroundings amongst humanity. The story regards a killer who has no remorse for his crimes, even going so far as to attack the mother of some of his victims in the courtroom. Illyria’s presence at the trial is seemingly to gain a better understanding of what causes humanity to regard remorse and forgiveness as a trait to be admired. Illyria breaks the man out of a guard van and takes him across the desert. During this journey, whilst questioning the criminal’s lack of remorse, Illyria also reflects back on discussions with Wesley regarding his killing of the person who brought Illyria into Fred’s body. As you may expect, this all has a relevance to Illyria trying to understand just what she did when she took Fred’s life. I have to admit I was quite surprised to find myself emoting so strongly with a character I’ve never come across. This lays at the feet of David’s deft scripting. Scott’s artwork is very strong, there are times when it almost reaches Cassaday’s Planetary levels, probably due to the costume design of Illyia, but mainly due to the great skill with which Scott uses the character’s and their surroundings. Nicola’s sense of panel dynamic is very strong, whether it is the talking head panels or the action scenes, and the clarity of layout makes it a pleasure to read. As a newcomer to Buffy related comics, I found this particular one to be very good, and it will probably prompt me to check out some of the other titles. My initial reason for wanting to read this comic was the creative team though, and I feel vindicated by that choice. You’ll be seeing a lot more of Nicola Scott soon, and apparently this Peter David bloke has been known to write a few things. |

| From Peterdavid.net - By Webmaster - 2006-04-13 Peter David posts missing dialogue from Spike vs Dracula Comics #1 Angel The winner of the WTF award in the category of comics is... "Spike vs. Dracula #1." I finally got my comp copies, only to page through it and discover that page 21 was completely devoid of dialogue. Didn’t ANYONE wonder why the ending made no sense? What’s really mystifying is that it was on the jpegs that IDW sent me for approval. Somewhere, between the printer and the printing, an entire page of my dialogue completely vanished. For those who bought the issue and would like to have some idea of what the hell happened at the end, the actual page of dialogue is reproduced below— PAGE 21 PANEL A: Spike stalks the pub, looking as fearsome as he ever has. The people cringe back. SPIKE 1: Because our lord and master, Count Dracula, is living up on the mansion on the hill! SPIKE 2: Yeah, that’s right! The head vampire himself! SPIKE 3: You thought he was just a pretend bloke in a book? PANEL B: He leans toward them, shouting. SPIKE 4: Think again! PANEL C: People cringe back as Spike’s shadow is cast over them, his arms spread wide. Only Spike’s shadow is in the shot; Spike is off panel, casting the shadow. SPIKE 5: This is going to be a vampire town in no time! Because as long as the Count’s in residence, everything’s ducky! SPIKE 6: Because he knows that you people wouldn’t have the stones to...oh, I dunno... PANEL D: Reverse angle so that Spike, who is now near the door, is pointing at them. SPIKE 7: Form an angry mob and go storming his place! SPIKE 8: Right now! SPIKE 9: Right this very minute! With pitchforks and flaming arrows and torches. SPIKE 10: But you won’t! ‘Cause you’re spineless! PANEL E: Closer on Spike, tossing off that British obscene gesture of his with the two fingers. SPIKE 11: So there! |
