Title: 1.07 Pk Tech Girl

willowroolz - June 19, 2004 12:39 PM (GMT)
Moya discovers the wreckage of a Peacekeeper command carrier. Despite the rest of the crew's reservations, D'Argo determines that they should investigate the derelict and salvage anything of value. Little do they know that someone got there before them...

I like this episode. It's not great, but it moves along happily enough and it's quite atmospheric. The opening shots of the Zelbinion adrift in the planet's rings are haunting and, whereas most shows would have resorted to special effects to portray the ship's innards, the use of the White Bay nuclear power station gives it a very realistic, grimy feel and they use it well.

The sub plot about Rygel's torture onboard the Zelbinion at the hands of Durkha is quite effective, and sets up events down the line, as does the introduction of Gilina. In fact it is probably the love story between Gilina and Crichton that carries the episode along - it's quite nicely done, even if it does feel a little like "Captain Kirk Syndrome". Certainly Aeryn's reaction to the situation is very interesting, and her admission that she was attracted to Crichton is typical Farscape - other shows would have kept it quiet and dragged it out for an age, but not on this show.

Perhaps the only thing that lets the episode down is the look of the Sheyang. Their presence is fine, the look of their ship is interesting, but it doesn't help that they look like giant frogs and have silly voices. Still, it's one of many setups for a return later in the series.

An enjoyable mystery/romance/action episode that shows the series is starting to move in the right direction. There's still work to be done, though!

I know what you mean about the appearance of the Sheyang, very dodgy looking. Apart from that, I really enjoyed the episode, Aeryns' jealousy, was so apparent as she walks in and catches the clinch about John and the blonde chick (can't remember her name ;) ) And totally agree that it has the 'Captain Kirk syndrome' written all over it. Perhaps now, John knows that Aeryn had been attracted to him, there will be, a lot less of that. Blonde chicks' departure with Aeryn was quite touching. I felt she understood the circumstances, and knew that Aeryn wasn't a traitor.

I cannot get interested in Rygel though atm, I'm not used to 'puppets' (sorry :) ) I did like D'Argos' ranting though

The special effects at the beginning, fantastic. I think I'm beginning to see the appeal after all ;)

Actually, it's the football's fault. I've amassed a stockpile of Earth 2 and Space Above & Beyond episodes that are demanding to be watched as well

Persephone - June 22, 2004 09:33 PM (GMT)
ooohh, I'll use the same excuse as James, yep, it's because of the football. How could they possibly schedule it, in the middle of a mass rewatch

Couldn't agree more on this one Steve. The premise of the episode itself was pretty interesting, and we never did find out (did we ??) who actually took down the Zelbinion (although after not wanting to come back out of this composer to check the spelling of that name I stumbled across a spoiler and find out who did it !! Bollox ). That being said however the episode was nearly completely undermined by the uber-laughably bad Sheyang.

The dynamic between, the triangle between Gilina, Crichton and Aeryn was fascinating to watch, and IMO, like yours, carried the entire episode. Although, I have to admit that at one point I sat there thinking that Jim Kirk would be mighty proud of the boy Crichton

The scenes with Rygel reliving certain parts of his previous torment were character building and as such valuable, but beyond that didn't do too much for me.

As episodes go, it's one of the better episodes so far. Up until now I've always had a problem with the particular DVD disc that carries this episode, however it now appears to play fine, so this was the first time I'd actually seen this episode.

Looking at the episodes that went before it, it's probably my favourite episode since the Premiere, with the possible exception of Back and Back and Back To the Future.

Couple of facts re: this episode;

It was apparently the first episode of Farscape to ever air anywhere. It aired as a special preview to the upcoming series on SciFi Channel's sister channel USA Network four days before the Premiere episode aired on SciFi. And apparently in the original version of the script, Gilina would have died at the end of the episode. What a downer that would have been.

That's a very interesting point. It was also the first one that was filmed all at once, rather than being scheduled together with scenes from other episodes as had happened up to that point. The general feeling was that this led to an upturn in quality.

Absolutely, especially when you consider what a precedent David Kemper set by doing this, as he later saved Chiana from the same fate because she, too, worked so well. :)

it was obviously Farscape's homage to Dr Who Steve, they did it on purpose.... ;)
