Title: Weekend #2
Description: top 10????
Craig G - October 16, 2005 04:12 PM (GMT)
just thought. . .
As we are getting to the end of the secend weekend that Serenity has been on release, i was wondering where everyone thinks that it will rank in this weeks top 10 at the box office???
I think that, with the release of Wallace and Gromit that the movie may slip in to position 2, though i dont think that there is much more competition this weekend for the movie so i dont think that it will fall farther than 2???
However the 2nd weekend in the US saw it going from no 2 to no 9, so this weekend are we expecting it to drop out the american top 10???
whats the thoughts, ideas or pedictions?

I think it will go down to about number 5. I hope it doesn't though.

Its bound to drop if for no other reason that its not on as many screens as other releases such as W&G and Domino.

It is still getting lots of nice reviews over here though which hopefully might help it stay around longer. :)

Hopefully it won't drop too low. I think it will drop to round 4 or 5 :)
Can't for the life of me see why people would want to see W & G <_< Never liked any of it. My sister-in-law said she was really looking forward to seeing W & G, I told her off  and insisted that she see Serenity instead

Aw, W&G are great
I'm still chuckling after watching A Close Shave again on Saturday ("The bounce has gone from his bungee" )

I went to see it on Friday, and the cinema wasn't full, but it was a good sized crowd. I think it'll still be top 5, possibly top 3.

In the states, Serenity has dropped to number 12 in the charts. It has now taken $22,144,000 over there.

how many million needed to greenlight the sequel?
smellyphagor - October 17, 2005 07:09 PM (GMT)
According to Whedonesque it has dropped to six.
I think hell needs to freeze over before a sequel is annouced :(

I believe $80 million globally would ensure the sequel(s).
Though $22 million in 3 weeks in the US is not great, its still an ok number.
Though the movie cost $39, so with the global takings over the next few weeks i think it will surpass 39 million, though not sure that it will reach the 80 million mark in the cinema.
Though I wouldnt destroy the idea that a sequel is out of the window, as DVD sales will also be taken into account when it comes to sequel crunch time

The $39 million price tag for the movie, AFAIK doesn't include promotional costs. Plus to that you've got the physical costs involved with producing and marketing the DVDs.
It's looking like the US box office will close @ around $25 million. The last I heard it hadn't opened in too many places outside of the US; ourselves, Australia and Portugal I think. Don't know about the Portuguese numbers but it's taken about $5 million combined from the UK/Australian box office, taking the total up to $30 million. It's probably optimistic to hope for anything more than another couple of million $ before they close but every little helps, especially with the movie yet to open in the majority of Europe. You'd kind of hope that it would do fairly well in Germany and France at least.
It's still looking likely that it'll pull back the majority, if not all, of it's initial production budget before the world box office closes.
Assuming that the movie DVD is equally as successful as the series DVD set then they'll be expecting to shift around 500,000 units in the US, and whilst I don't have any numbers for DVD performance over here, it's often high in the Amazon DVD charts.
At the end of the day it shouldn't lose money, probably making a modest profit. Whether Universal will be happy with that remains to be seen. On the positive side, Universal have so far stuck to the line that they had modest expectations of the movie, which it may end up meeting, just about. Another important factor may well be Universal themselves. Beyond wanting to w**k with JW, and besides Firefly's impressive DVD sales, Universal want a franchise. Hopefully they'll see this first movie as being audience building. All decent franchises have taken time to build.

Saw the film today at the 17:15 showing. Considering Tuesday is cheap ticket day, I am afraid to say there were only 3 of us in the cinema. :(
Obviously this is just one experience but it may be the case countrywide.
