Mixed feelings about this one, mainly due to the irritatingly hyperbolic "Treks Finest Hour" sticker that adorned my video copy of this when it came out
I'm not a big fan of the "is it reality or not" type of ep. The idea just seems tired, stale and distinctly unoriginal. That aside the acting and the setting do a lot to redeem the ep for me, and there's a certain amount of fun in looking at the chacters without the make up on.
Treks finest hour it aint though.

And that was about it. I was expecting a lot from this episode after hearing it mentioned in reverential tones for a long time. It was okay but that's about all. And Avery Brooks' impression of a breakdown towards the end was cringe-worthy
I have to say it. When it comes to this sort of story, Farscape owns the rights.

I think to proclaim it as Trek's finest hour is a little OTT.
It is however, better than anything that Voyager or Enterprise managed to come with over the course of their runs.
As far as the episode goes on its own merits, I'd have to disagree Steve. Whilst far from a work of perfection, it still stands out as one of the best that DS9 managed to produce. IMO :)

Really? That surprises me, I must admit.

I'm a big fan of Avery Brooks. I know his style is often perceived as being somewhat stilted or 'hammed up', but the Sisko story was always one of the strands of DS9 that appealed to me the most. FBTS being a perfect showcase for Brooks/Sisko, I was always inclined to like it. It's probably not as good as some people make out, but for me, it ticks pretty much all of the necessary boxes.

Ah. Well, you already know my feelings on that subject  ;)

Which meant you not particularly 'loving' this one, didn't come as a great surprise!
Obviously it's not everyone's cup of tea, much as Sisko/Brooks isn't. People's opinion of this episode often comes down to a pseudo 'is Avery Brooks any good as an actor' argument.
I'm trying to think of what episodes you'll still have to watch at this point, think you're in for a few more decent episodes yet before the series draws to a close.

If I'm not then Dave's got some serious explaining to do :lmao:

^^ Can't quite remember your feelings on Jadzia Dax, but if they're anything like mine, you're in for at least one VERY satisfying episode at the end of this season!
Next year goes a lot more arc-intensive, especially the last 8/9 which are effectively a mini-series within a series.

Never had a problem with Dax, tbh, but seeing as I don't have a problem with Nicole De Boer either it's not really an issue

Hmm, up to the end of series 6 you've got a couple of completely shite eps, a couple of okayish ones and a couple of seriously good eps :ponder:
