Title: New To Firefly

Velouria - October 12, 2005 01:03 PM (GMT)
Hi
I didn't know where to jump in, as most threads are about the movie at the moment, but I've just discovered Firefly, after being a Buffy fan for years. What can I say - i'm completely hooked!

I wasn't sure after watching the initial ep serenity - I was a bit confused about where everything fitted in...the mate I was watchng it with gave up on the basis of this, which was a shame. I decided to give it a bit longer - it was Bushwacked that really got me hooked. River's "They come in two, hands of blue", cutting to the guys with the blue hands on the Alliance ship...

I'm going to see the film tonight - I'm soooo excited :yahoo:

Glad you're enjoying the show so much, feel free to contribute to the episode threads in the Rewatch :)

Enjoy the film

Thanks - I'm looking forward to the film. I'll go find the episode threads as well.

Do the film and the series plot lines overlap much (sorry if this has been covered in the film reviews, but I didn’t want to know what happens in either yet!)

I was wondering whether I would miss anything if I see the film when I’m only half way through the series? Or whether the film would spoil the end of the series?

I was hoping to wait until I’d seen all the TV episodes before going to the film, but some friends have organised a Serenity trip this evening :)

I reckon you'll be fine seeing the film before watching the rest of the series. There are a couple of little plot points which might be made clearer by watching the later episodes, but nothing important enough to worry about, and hopefully that will just increase your enjoyment of those episodes :)

Let us know what you think!

The film wraps up a couple of loose ends from the series but it is viewable without having seen the series first.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Firefly

Better late than never ;)

Velouria - October 12, 2005 01:44 PM (GMT)
Great, that's a relief - thanks a lot :)

It's weird, but I've not looked forward to seeing a film so much since Lord of the Rings.

I know how you feel :D

Some of us have been looking forward to this film for a very long time ;)

Yeah - so I gather from the posts on this board - it must have been a really long wait since the show first aired. I can understand how excited everyone was when it was released last week.

Just a little

Glad to here you like Firefly.

I thought reading the Comics after watching the series helped a bit, as stuff happens in the comics which don't get covered in the film. I want say anymore though. ;)

 You'll love the film. You won't struggle with it although you'll have to go back and watch the rest of the dvds of course. I don't think it will spoil the rest of the series to much for you though. Have a great time

Always nice to meet a new Firefly fan.

Out of interest- is your name after the song by The Pixies, by any chance?

I agree that the film would be understandable and enjoyable even without watching the series, but I think it would be better for people to watch the series first. There are a couple of things in the series that you might view differently once you have watched the film and a couple of things in the film you might not fully appreciate if you haven't watched the series. The couple of things I'm thinking of, btw, are a very specific couple of things.

Probably the couple of "little plot points" I was referring to

Please, everyone, don't put people off seeing the film. We need bums on seats!

I'm guessing breast implants, right?

Anyway, not seen the film yet, started a rewatch of Firefly today, its shiny! Bought it on day of release and watched it all pretty quick, but not ventured back aboard since.

Good stories and great lines, especially Cap'n Mal.

And how much do i love the theme tune!

Gonna watch it all again and then head down the cinema. Looking forward too it.

How did you guess? At long last we find out why Jayne has a girls name

Not sure what you mean, I don't think anyone's trying to put anybody off

I'm not trying to put anyone off, I'm just saying watch the series first.

Hows this for an idea for a good day: get up (a decent sort of time, say, 10AM :) ), spend approx. 12 hours watching the series, go to the cinema and watch Serenity.

smellyphagor - October 14, 2005 07:10 PM (GMT)
 In a way you make my point!

I just didn't want people with a casual interest be put off seeing the film if they haven't seen the series, or think they need to put lots of w**k in first. You might get a bit more from the film if you've seen the series, but it is designed for people who are new to the Firefly universe.

I know your suggestion was tongue in cheek, Mathew, but the drift of this thread was that the film is an inaccessable w**k of art you need to put the hours in before hand preparing for- which isn't exactly going to encourage people to see it, and the fact is if you want to see this film at the cinema you need to get there quick.

Understood. Everyone should go and watch Serenity irrespective of whether they've seen Firefly or not. They should do it soon too as cinemas like to chop and change these days. Watching Firefly first would be better but if you haven't done so yet it's a bit late to worry.

All of which rather makes me wonder what my original point was :)

smellyphagor - October 14, 2005 10:49 PM (GMT)
It was valid- in an ideal world watching the series first is better- don't worry.

Velouria - October 15, 2005 11:36 AM (GMT)
Hi everyone

As a newbie to firefly, I had been a bit worried about whether I’d get everything in the film, having only seen a few episodes of the TV series.

I went with a group of people, most of whom were totally new to it (one guy is a big fan and was getting as many people along as possible). We all thought the film was fantastic  and most of the group are talking about getting the series DVD now – so the film has made people want to watch the series to see what they've been missing.

For me, I understand what you're saying about how it could be better to have seen the series first (I was glad I'd seen a few episodes), but I think Joss hit a balance that didn't alienate people new to the characters and story.

Excellent news Velouria  well done to your friend who rounded everyone up :D

I thought it was absolutely great. I'm in a bit of a quandary now, as I want to see it again after I've finished watching the series, but I don't want to watch the series up too soon...

I've got to say thanks to you though, as it was something you said in a reply to one of my posts over on the Buffy board which made me finally watch Firefly, I'd missed it when it was on TV. So thanks for introducing me :D

:D Aww thanks, and you are quite welcome. I think most people in the UK got into the series through the DVDs and I think it is a series that suits it. I missed some of the eps when it was broadcast first on TV and got a bit lost
