Stardate: Unknown Bashir is asked to help a group of genetically enhanced people integrate into normal society, but w**king around their personality problems. Soon, they must analyse a proposed treaty with the Dominion and predict its outcome.

(not the most accurate episode summary I've ever read but you get the idea  ).

Leaving aside the daft premise that Bashir could help a bunch of loonies just because he happens to be genetically engineered and so are they, I quite like this one.

The only thing that really winds me up is that it took the whole episode for Bashir to realise that he couldn't predict the future using mathematics.

I can just about accept the premise give that Bashir is probably the best person to deal with them if only because he's on their level - being the arrogant guy he is it wouldn't have surprised me if he did it as he knew himself to be the only person who could deal with them...

This episode is another one I really like - if anything because of the wonderful Jack Pack - after just this one episode Jack became one of my favourite DS9 guest stars.

Not sure about the main plot though - I've never beleived this whole 'predict the future to 100% accuracy' gubbins, although it's interesting to see that Starfleet lap up all the good news from the mutants (such as deciphering the Cardassian meeting holorecording), yet as soon as they say something that they don't like, it's straightjackets and loony bin time :)

And that's what's wrong with the world today, my friend. :)

Oi, who invited Harry Hill onto DS9? Hmm? Hmm?

Was this supposed to be some sort of comment on autism? If so, it was almost as blundering and heavy handed as that earlier episode about the woman "disabled" by gravity

I think I would have much preferred this storyline had it been developed as a backstory over the course of a few episodes. As it stands it felt rushed and I found it hard to suspend my disbelief as a result. I also felt that portraying these people as, in Dave's words, "loonies" - irrespective of the explanation of what happened to them as kids - was typical of Trek over-simplifying and patronising its audience. There really was no need. As such, the only one of them who evoked any kind of reaction from me was Sarina - the only one who felt remotely believable amongst all the extremes.

I'm just surprised they didn't ask Dustin Hoffman to guest star

So in conclusion you loved it :ponder:

There's me trying to sell this season of DS9 as top class and having just looked at the last few eps it's anything but

Hey ho :ph43r:

In fairness I do usually find this one watchable but that's without looking at whether said loonies are supposed to be a comment on autism and glossing past the whole predicting the future using mathematics thing :)

That's what I meant to say, of course

Just looked ahead.

There are some cracking eps coming up, honest

Honest injun? :ponder:

I think your credibility in this matter is about as high in my opinion as your "Sisko" beard  ;)

Pretty much agree with Steve's observations, especially around this one being a very heavy-handed observation/social commentary on autism. However, I have to admit, I like this one. I have a particular fondness for the 'Jack Pack' episodes. The sequal (of sorts), Chrysalis, remains one of my all-time favourite episodes of Star Trek. Not because it's a particularly monumental episode, but it plays on a number of emotions, far better than this installment does.
