Title: Cult Tv Comics Doing Well Shocker.

Sorry about the Sun-alike headline, but this story has kinda taken everyone be surprise in Comic circles.

Comics based on 2 "failed" cult tv series-Angel and Firefly, have become the hottest movers in the back issue market in the US.

Angel has sold out of all of the first printings of it's first 4 issues, and prices for these first prints are rising fast. Issue 1 already has an average back issue price of $8. An increase of over 100% in just over 4 months :o Some of the variants are even more valuable, i.e. if you managed to find the Igor Korday cover to issue 1 (the one with Puppet Angel) that is selling for over $15 :o :o

The Spike book has also sold out everywhere, the photo cover of this book is selling on ebay for up to £20, but in the US (where it had better distribution) it's only going for about $12 still a 50% increase in two months.

Serenity. Well, the story is pretty much the same with this one.

Issue 1 is going for upwards of $8 in the US, almost a 200% value increase.

In the UK, you could probably add another 50-100% to each of these prices mainly because they are so hard to get over here with tragically small print runs and poor distribution in this country. At collectormania, the cheapest I saw issue 1 of Serenity for was £15. I almost fainted. OK, it was the Jayne cover with his crotch rather prominent, but hey, I would still have almost fainted at the price alone

So if you've got em, or even if you've got spares, then maybe you've just made good investments for the future.

Or if some gorgeous person got them for you

Mine are going nowhere though, they are staying with me for ever! well I bequeath them to Robbi when I turn to dust but I wouldn't part with them.

Apart from the great stories/dialogue involved they all have exceptional artwork which doesn't hurt. @ the Jayne cover

It's great news for the industry though  hopefully we will see more

Well, IDW, the company behind the Angel and Spike books are already in the planning stages for another series (they havent' confirmed who will be the star yet, but as Dark Horse still own the rights to all of the Buffy Characters, it won't be them :tear: For a while anyway :shifty: Negotiations are underway for the rights apparently)

It may well be another Angel series, that would deal directly with the aftermath of Not Fade Away :o But it's dependant on what Joss allows them to do.

I was lucky enough to get hold of 2 covers for each Serenity issue, but I'm not parting with them  Well, maybe the Book one :ponder:

And let's not forget the rumoured Veronica Mars series from DC.

This cover is only a mock up, but you get the idea

maybe they are waiting to see if there is a demand for VM comic

jamiearmour - December 7, 2007 10:56 AM (GMT)
Possibly, but they've already signed the show's creator up as a writer for an as yet un-named book that the publisher feels will "allow him to work to his strengths"

Make of that what you will

As much as I love Kevin Smith's work, and actually like Reaper, its numbers are no better than those for Veronica Mars last year. The show that the CW have put most publicity behind, Gossip Girl, likewise, does no better in the numbers than Veronica Mars did. Which, in hindsight proves the CW's decision last season to cancel the show was monumentally stupid.

Take Smallville, and arguably Supernatural out of the CW's lineup and the whole schedule is a complete disaster. Probably the one network that's actually grateful for the strike, they were seriously getting their asses kicked every single night of the week.

I love and hate the CW in equal measures. I really loved VM and they cancelled it, but I also love Supernatural and now I like Gossip Girl and Reaper too. But I still don't think I can ever forgive them for VM :tear: Though some of the things in Supernatural this new season almost make up for it :ph43r: And it did free up Kristen Bell for 'Other Things' ;)

Anyway I, for one, would be more than happy to have VM back in comic form
