I saw it for the first time today what movie this isn't exacly a full review just a few thoughts for now.
This was very much River story with some great via and fight scenes that could give Buffy herself a run for her money. Anyway I no we shouldn't be surprised Joss has always said no char but Wash's death was a massive shock I had a hoped there would be another Firefly/Serenity movie but Wash gone it leaves a big hole I think he was buy far the funniest chacter. Book's death was also a blow as we'll never get to find out what is life was like before he became a Shepred. In a way their deaths were important as an outright victory for Mal and co just wouldn't have been believable in a war there are alway casualities
The film help unravel two of the biggest mysteries of the series we learnt more about River's abilities and the origins of the Revers the planet they were on (I can't remember the name) was the most striking image with bodies everywhere and friends with dead this all adds up to one powerful film.
The only down side was there was not enough time in one film, I would like a bit more time to get to know Book for one and Mal and Inara are still not making a move but at least Simon came to his senses at last  One more thing I'm in love with Summer

Just back from seeing it. A big
Unfortunately I got spoiled re the two big shocks in the movie, but there impact was still quite profound.
A slow(ish) start, after the first Reaver incident, but once it kicked in, the pace was frenetic, especially towards the end.
Great to see that JW took the chance to tie up a few loose ends, ie. River/Simon and the Reavers.
I managed to shield Vic from the spoilers so the waterworks were in full flow come the closing credits
Fingers crossed that the movie keeps pulling in the £/$. I wanna see a sequal !!
goth willow fan - October 6, 2005 09:05 PM (GMT)
Wow!
The death of Wash was a complete surprise to me.
The balance of drama and humour was spot on.
Yay-For-Me - October 6, 2005 09:22 PM (GMT)
Wow!!!!! I think that sums it up  Absolutely amazing.
I'm really upset about Wash's death :tear: I've just seen a picture of him on Ant's cards and got really teary. I can't believe it :tear:
All in all, a fantastic film   It had everything. Can't wait to see it again on monday.

I thought we'd see more of the blue gloves.
Cardelia - October 6, 2005 10:05 PM (GMT)
Good as it was, imagine how much better it would have been as a TV show :( Bloody Fox.
I was totally unspoiled for this and the death of Wash was a real shock. I wasn't expecting 2 of the main cast to die - once Book had gone I thought the rest would survive.
I spent the first few minutes identifying actors - she's been in Lost, he's been in the West Wing etc. etc. so I missed most of the exposition. It might explain why I think certain parts of the film won't make sense to non-fans, but there is a nagging doubt that Joss didn't put enough emphasis on the cause of things like Mal's hatred of the Alliance. I hope I'm wrong though, because it's a great film and I want more.
willowroolz - October 6, 2005 10:15 PM (GMT)
Great film  I'm not daft enough to say it's the greatest film ever made (it obviously isn't), or even that it's the best film I've seen this year (it's not), but what it is is the most fun I've had watching a film in ages
Too much, really, to remember all in one go, but that double, triple and quadruple bluff opening (the exposition, the class, River's treatment, the operative etc) was very well done, as was the opening title sequence.
Book :tear:
Wash
:lmao: @ Kaylee wanting to live for the sex
More to follow... :)

The pen through the forehead made me :shit: myself.
What an amazingly enjoyable film, funny, gripping. Maybe not sad enough :ponder:
Hovis - October 7, 2005 05:34 AM (GMT)
Wow! I had high expectations for this film, and was worried I may have been let down. But it was the opposite, and was better than I could have imagined. I don't go over the top very much, but 11/10! :lmao:
Sure, as Steve says, it's not the best film ever, but it has more heart and soul and spirit than any sci fi movie I've seen in a long time, and certainly leaves the new Star Wars trilogy standing, IMO.
It was a bit like an extended tv show episode, but as it was Joss's first movie that's probably not surprising. Not that its a problem, it worked on so many levels. The cast clearly knew and loved their characters and all of them had the opportunity to shine, although I'd have liked to have seen more of Book and Wash :tear: before their untimely ends... they were the two characters we perhaps saw the least of.
I thought both Nathan and Summer were superb, and I hope that Serenity has launched two major movie careers for these too, especially for Summer. (I know I'm not the only one who fell in love with her after Collectormania on Saturday! )
I think Joss has shown he can cut it as a big screen player too. Can't wait forWonder Woman now.
Better stop before I start sounding like I w**k for SFX, but wow!

When the opening numbers came in over the weekend, some Enterprise fans on the TrekToday boards were trying to pull the movie down, making out that Nemesis, their own berated movie was just as good and also deserved higher numbers.
When I saw the movie last night all's I could think was 'You might be able to compare the numbers but that's all. Serenity was great, Nemesis was :shit:'
willowroolz - October 7, 2005 07:38 AM (GMT)
Okay, some more...
Big thumbs up for the way they handled Inara's whereabouts, after her proclaiming she was leaving Serenity in the last couple of episodes of the series :)
Strangely, I don't remember thinking at any point that it was like an extended episode. I thought the pace, the action, the drama and the wit flowed along at such breakneck speed that it was just a great adventure movie. The direction, however, did betray Whedon's tv roots a little - but not too much, and for a first attempt, by and large, it was impressive.
I was struggling to think of something I didn't like. Well, the music wasn't particularly memorable, but it wasn't bad, and, erm...
I was very impressed with the way each of the characters was given ample screen time (except Book, of course). All of the actors are so comfortable in their roles, they were all excellent, and they all got great lines (my favourite was Kaylee's "Been more'n a year since I had anything twixt my nethers didn't run on batteries" :lmao: ). And LMFAO at River peeping down from the ceiling when Kaylee and Simon finally got down to it (and big thumbs up to Whedon for not allowing Mal and Inara to get together in this movie as well, it would've been too obvious, imo. Maybe next time!) - and LOL at the collective "awwww" from the audience (not me, of course :snooty: ) when they did
The scenes on Miranda were exceptionally spooky which, considering it was broad daylight, was cleverly done.
Wash's death. Brilliantly done, typically Whedon, he's done it so many times before in that sudden and harsh fashion that it was inevitable one of the characters would go that way at some point. I had this horrible feeling that Kaylee and Simon were going to follow as well, but he must be saving that for the sequel
Loved the final shot
One thing I did say to Nick afterwards - if Out of Gas is the best tv flashback episode ever, then the sequel should be the greatest flashback movie ever, that way we can have Wash and Book back
I heard someone say, as we were filing out, that they "expected more". Well, hell, I don't know exactly what they expected. Serenity exceeded my expectations in practically every way.
I'm sure I've got more to say, probably after another visit this afternoon :ph43r:
:)
EDIT: Oh, and of course the most obvious thing that should be mentioned is River, and why the Alliance did what they did, and how the Reavers came to be. It would have been great to see that story played out over the course of the series, but it works brilliantly in the movie, and the mini revelation as all the pieces slipped into place was a joy :)

Yeah, it's bizarre. Even though I knew Whedon wouldn't cheapen it like that, I was still convinced, when Mal sat at the controls at the end and said to someone off camera "Are you going to ride shotgun?" oslt, that the camera would pan around and Wash was going to be sitting there :(
 at River's "aptitude", though

At one point I thought they were all going to die
Ant's friend (he's never seen Firefly) who came with us said it was brilliant but I think he found my reaction to Wash's death quite funny.

I was starting to think "Maybe he doesn't want to make a sequel after all"
More favourite bits:
Mal: While I'm gone, Zoe is in command. Now, if I'm not back in an hour, I want you to take this ship, take off... and you come and you rescue me!
Zoë: What? And risk my new ship?
Mal: Yes, I have read a poem. Try not to faint.
Mal: Nothing to fear, Doctor.
Simon: This isn't fear. This is anger.
Mal: Well, with a face like yours it's hard to tell.

It's interesting that you said it didn't feel like an extended episode, for me I think it did but only because I was so comfortable with the setting, so at 'home' with the characters.
On the other hand it certainly didn't feel as long as one of those extended episodes :)
goth willow fan - October 7, 2005 08:57 AM (GMT)
I was going to say it felt like an extended episode, but in a good way.
willowroolz - October 7, 2005 09:02 AM (GMT)
It's weird. See, in that respect I'd look at some of the Trek films, which definitely felt like extended episodes, and this didn't feel at all like that to me. It felt like it belonged on the big screen all along :)
It'll be interesting to see what Dave thinks this afternoon, I don't think he's ever seen Firefly :)
goth willow fan - October 7, 2005 09:06 AM (GMT)
I know what you mean, it really did feel like a film rather than a tv show. I suppose it's that all the trademark characters, situation, great one liners etc were all present and correct. The pacing totally different to tv though.

When I said that, I just meant the way it was set out, with the teaser before the credits, and just the general flow of the narrative, rather than the feel. I should have been more clear!
On the whole, I felt the characters and the setting were easily big enough for the big screen, and it worked completely. Of course, I'm a big fan of the show, and know all the characters well, so I'd be interested to see how someone who hadn't seen the show feels about Serenity.
I can't believe everyone in the cinema with me had seen Firefly, and everyone seemed to be leaving with a positive expression on their face and it appeared they all enjoyed that 2 hours. Looking at the comments on the Beeb film review was interesting.... when I looked, out of 591 votes, 91% gave it 5 stars, which I thought was a good sign. :D

Bill The Bloodless - October 7, 2005 11:40 AM (GMT)
I thought it was dragged out way too long and very much like Firefly, there were some good bits but overall it was just too slow. The humour was more miss than hit and it was predictable (but to be fair so are most fiilms). It was nice (well not nice but you know what I mean ;) ) to see main characters getting killed, though they were the most obvious two to die (I was surprised by Wash's death mind). And the music was too intrusive. So not the worst film I've seen but definitely nothing special.

Thanks, Bill... always interesting to read your views, even if sometimes I don't agree with them! I'm sorry you didn't enjoy it, but where would the fun be if we all liked the same things.
On the whole, the reviews (from critics and cinema goers) do seem positive on the whole, which is pleasing to me.
I agree with your points about the deaths of Wash and Book. It's a rarity to see a main character get killed in a movie, but it was good to see Joss take the bull by the horns and do it, not once but twice. Wash's death was shocking... having seen Book go, I just didn't expect to see another demise. But Joss has never been scared of killing off his characters, so it shouldn't be much of a surprise really.

We had one as well
Our theatre was nowhere near packed, but they certainly seemed to be a broad spectrum of folks. There was plenty of clapping and cheering over the end credits as well. I'm presuming that's not because they were glad it had ended ;)
regarding the 'extended tv episode' thing, I think Hovis is right, the structure of it could easily have been grafted directly from TV, but the spectacle itself was more than enough for the larger screen.
Edit: Just taken a look at the mid-week figures and including Wednesday it's taken just over $12 million. Looks like this weekend could be pivotal.

:yahoo: First of all I loved it, every minute, I thought the story was great and Joss managed to tie the Reavers and River storyline in well.
It was wonderful to see all the characters again, great dialogue I was laughing quite a lot, sadly in the middle of one of those laughs Wash died  and I was crying from there on. I kept thinking of ways to save him but it was not to be :tear: :tear:
Damn Joss and his consequences. I loved the Kaylee wanting to live for the sex :lmao:
I was quite moved and teary by Book dying too but nothing prepared me for Wash :tear: I even though Serenity was a goner at one point.
Mal's conversation with Zoe at the end made me teary too. :tear:
Excellent film, the Reavers were suitably scary and it was nice to see why they existed I can't believe I even felt sorry for them at one point. Miranda was excellently done, horrifying.
I'm going to see it again next week and cannot wait for the DVD
I was going no no no after Book and then even louder for Wash and I believe the words I hate you Joss Whedon crossed my lips
Adam was hilarious as Jayne too
Loved the fight scenes although I was seriously worried about the crew when they got to the blockade stage :fear:
Loved the incorporation of "Can't stop the signal" :yahoo:
Stewie Griffin - October 7, 2005 04:10 PM (GMT)
After my terrible run of luck concerning Firefly/Serenity (having been accepted, but then not being given an address, to see the previews earlier in the year, and then buying a ticket for the Starfury convention and then being unable to attend) I thought it was going to go pear-shaped again when the screening I just attended started half an hour late due to technical problems, and then had dodgy picture and sound for the first twenty minutes!!
But it finally storted itself out and I could sit back and take it all in at long last...... :yahoo:
It was certainly worth it!!
I did manage to get myself badly spoiled a while ago so whilst I knew about the fate of Book and Wash, both of their deaths brought a lump to my throat, especially Wash's, and I'm ashamed to say I nearly joined my girlfriend crying when the gravestones were on screen! :tear: :D
Overall I thought it was an excellent film, with a great plot, script and special effects and excellent performances from all the cast, and certainly felt like a proper 'motion picture' and not an extended episode. I didn't notice the music much, although in my book that is a good thing although I've still ordered the soundtrack anyway!
I just hope that the sequels get green-lit soon, because if this is anything to go by I'm sure that it will go from strength to strength.

I was really shocked at Wash's dead I just couldn't believe then for a few seconds I hoped Simon would have something in his bag in save him but of course I knew it wasn't going to happen I loved the film but I left the cinema really upset :tear: it felt as though I knew him sounds I know daft but then again Joss's secret making characters that you care about!

Turely amazing movie. One of the best made in a long time IMO. A lot better than Star Wars Episode 1, 2 and 3.
The Begining was really good, I thought.
I was so upset on Wash's death. :tear: I shouted No really loud in the cinema. :(
Book's I knew because I looked at the trading cards at Collectormania.
River was really good and so was Simon.
Overall it had lots of Funny, Sad and very cool fight scenes. The Reavers were amazing aswell... but I don't like them anymore. :(
Poor Wash...
Can't wait for the Sequal! Well I hope theres a Sequal.

I plan on going to see it again, I think improving box office ticket sales will be the best way to get a sequel so I will going to see it as many times as possible it wiil be tough job but someone has got to do it
I has been a while since I've seen the later episodes of Firefly did Shepard Book plan on leaving Serenity because if he didn't then why did he leave Mal & co. I thought it was a shame Ron Glass didn't have a bigger part in the film.
What does everyone think of my new av?
