Title: Serenity Box Office Figures
Crichton Kicks - October 2, 2005 02:14 AM (GMT)
Based on estimated numbers from ShowBizData for Friday it looks like Serenity's going to pull in around the $4 million mark on it's opening day. If that pans out it should take #2 spot behind Flightplan.
Jessica Alba's new movie, Into the Blue, looks to have pulled in $2.5 million, just to put Serenity's numbers into perspective.
Whilst $4 million wasn't the number that was hoped for, it looks like a fairly slow day/night.
Edit: The Numbers website is reporting that Serenity actually pulled in $4.2 million, just $.2 million behind Flightplan.

:) Thanks James
Hopefully word of mouth will get the ball rolling and make it a success, not a bad start though

There are various unsubstantiated quotes flying around regarding the numbers.
Apparently $10 million on Friday would have guaranteed the sequals being greenlit next week. They're also suggesting that $80 million worldwide is another figure that will prompt the sequals being greenlit.
On another note, beware of any and all threads elsewhere (not here) regarding the movie, at times like these you find out just how moronic can be. There are multiple spoilers just dropped into 'non-spoilery' threads. I've just been spoiled by two massive revelations

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/daily/chart/?...05-09-30&p=.htmBoxOfficeMojo is reporting that Friday night`s takings for Serenity were $3.9 M against Flightplan`s $4.4 M.
If you look at the number of screens, Serenity opened on 2188 screens as opposed to Flightplan`s 3424 screens, so the screen average takings is highest for Serenity .

Argh. I hate the internet at times like this. I've read that the UK Browncoats site is no go at the moment. Cult TV wise I only really go here and Whedonesque- normally they are pretty good but now I'm well worried.
It is true that people can be stupid. And I will mention again SFX magazine, who put a great big spoiler about the film in a review they claimed in big letters not to have any spoilers, and even preceeded said spoiler with the words "Not to ruin the film or anything". And didn't even apologise, so far as I could see. :guns:

Crichton Kicks - October 2, 2005 07:05 PM (GMT)
Revised estimates for the opening weekend;
Friday - $3.917 million
Saturday - $3.676 million
Sunday - $2.548 million
Around $10.1 million for the weekend.
Taken from Yahoo News;
| QUOTE |
Serenity," a film based on the short-lived Western-flavored sci-fi TV series "Firefly," opened at No. 2 with $10.1 million, a figure within the modest expectations of its distributor, Universal Pictures. It marks the feature directing debut of "Firefly" creator Joss Whedon.

Let's hope Universal really are happy with the numbers and that they hold steady for the next few weeks.
smellyphagor - October 2, 2005 07:33 PM (GMT)
If the the $80 worldwide figure to kick in a sequel is correct I am kind of optimistic. 8th of the way there on one weekend and in one country- I know the biggest weekend in the biggest country. If the film is good it should hold up reasonably well- good films still do.
It is also nice to think my few quid next week will help in a small way to get a sequel. Fingers crossed.

This obviously means that Whedon's word got around about Jessica Alba being in a huge woolly parka for the whole movie
Fangy and grrr - October 4, 2005 04:38 PM (GMT)
I never really thought it would do massive boxoffice but the $80m worldwide would seem a decent target, you've also got to take into account dvd sales which considering the dvd sales of Firefly were one of the reasons for getting the film made they must of thought about.
Didn't the first Austin Powers movie only do so so @ the US Box Office but it was the fact that it sold/rented so well on dvd that helped get the sequels made.

I wouldn't worry about the opening, it will definitely be a word of mouth film and hopefully the numbers will grow as time goes on.
:)

It was bound to drop off a bit after all the fans had gone in the first few days anyway :)

| Serenity takes 2nd place at the UK box office for Friday. Very narrowly beaten by 'Pride and Prejudice'. There is a good chance that Serenity could take the number one slot for its British opening weekend |

That is just estimated though, the real figures will be put up tomorrow, hopefully better ones. :)
Craig G - October 9, 2005 10:41 PM (GMT)
i definatley think that it will be a success, but with a slow burn following in the cinemas rather than everyone rushing to see it in the first few days.
Though i definately feel that the film put a lid on the story and is a good place to end it (if we dont get sequels). However, there is still hundreds of potential in this verse for sequels
TV Yank - October 10, 2005 02:58 AM (GMT)
I was surprised at the low box office receipts for opening nite even tho I didn't have high expectations. Hopefully, the studio's expectations are equally modest.
We're entering the Halloween season, so a ton of new horror flicks will soon steal the audience. Following that, the release of some biggies (I'm looking forward to KING KONG with Naomi Watts). Poor SERENITY will be swamped and will probably have been pulled from most of the U.S. theaters before then.
Of course, criteria for success change constantly. The birth of SERENITY out of the unsuccessful FIREFLY demonstrates that. So there's at least one reason to stay optimistic.
For those willing to face a pessemistic outlook, here's a thread on the box office for SERENTIY that might prove insightful:
http://www.scalzi.com/whatever/003763.htmlAnd for those needing morale support, here's a highly positive review by SciFi master Orson Scott Card:
http://www.hatrack.com/osc/reviews/everyth...-30-extra.shtmlBTW, I haven't seen the film yet. I'm recovering from gall bladder surgery and right now, I view ALL entertainment thru very cranky spectacles. So I'll be seeing the film later, already badly spoiled. But that's not critical. I'm going for the fun of it, and to see if Summer Glau managed to reproduce the splendid w**k she did in the series.

Gossi has posted this over at cantstopthesignal:
"Serenity opens #1 in the UK!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
#1 new opener!
#1 movie of the weekend!
#1 gross per screen!
The only country to have growth from Friday to Saturday!
The UK becomes the first country to completely buck the trend, with Serenity soaring to the top of the charts.
WELL DONE EVERYBODY.
Press release and figures to follow shortly. We did good, we did real good."
btw, sorry if this double-posted - me and the 'puter had a breakdown in communications!
Beck.

Well in the first posting attempt for that UK was written properly in the title, shame it was the second attempt that got through!:( Oh well, the happiness levels from the content of the post are the same:)

And - surprise, surprise - the dvds are back in Amazon's top 15, even though it's cheaper elsewhere at the moment :)
Craig G - October 10, 2005 12:42 PM (GMT)
thats great news!!!!
even if it is sinking in the US hopefully other countries can keep the number up so we get a bit closer to the 80 million mark.
big claps for us UK fans

I`m guessing more good news is that all the Browncoaty people will rush to get the DVD when it comes out, which will look good to the Suits at the Studio. ;)

Sorry to read about the surgery and the crankiness after effects John... hope you feel better soon.
Hope you enjoy the movie when you get there... as for the lovely Summer, IMO she exceeds what she achieved in the series.
A few of us were lucky enough to meet her at a signing on the first, and she's lovely. If I had my way, Serenity would be the first step in a major movie career for her.
