Title: New To Firefly

TV Crazy - September 14, 2005 06:45 PM (GMT)
I'm thinking about getting Firefly on DVD, but i was wondering if someone could give me a sort of overview of what the show is about. Everyone i've talked to says it's great, so why is it so great, what makes it so special?

Thanks

Ems :)

I bought my Firefly boxset on impulse a couple of months ago and it was the best £17.99 I've ever spent. It's hard to pinpoint any one thing that makes Firefly a great series - it has a great cast, great writing and the sets and special effects are stunning. It has all the hallmarks of a Joss Whedon show - drama, tragedy and buckets of comedy. I got the sense that this was a real labour of love for Whedon, and the entire cast and crew seemed to have a blast making the show.

I was reluctant at first to even watch Firefly because I just wasn't sure what to expect, but I loved it. The relationships between the characters is what lies at the heart of the show, and the crew of Serenity are more like a family than anything else. The crew isn't made up of important people, they are a bit of a rag tag bunch who scrape together a living by taking what jobs they can (even if they're not entirely legal). They're not heroes, they're very flawed and very human, but seem all the more heroic for it. They also got the casting spot on, as all the actors connect really well with the characters they play and bring depth and humour to their roles to really bring them to life.

It might not be to everyone's taste, but it's worth viewing at least once. Even if it's just to see what the fuss is all about. But who knows, you might even find yourself joining the ranks of the Browncoats yourself!

I'm sure everyone else has other reasons for loving the show, but that's my tuppence worth anyway. Hope you enjoy Firefly as much as I did :D

 All of the above. It can be really humourous there are some hilarious moments and also very tragic and emotional. Every character is wonderful in their own way and it is incredibly hard to pick favourites which is really unusual especially after so few episodes.

From Amazon review

these 14 episodes (and enjoyable bonus features) offer everything you'd expect from the creator of Buffy: action, drama, humor, hints of romance, suspense, fine acting, film-quality direction, dazzling special effects, and ample proof that Fox made a glaring mistake in canceling the series. --Jeff Shannon

What more could you ask for.

My only advice is take it as it comes, don't try to understand everything straight away just watch and enjoy :)

It's ok - good in parts, weak in others. The characters don't really stand out plus I really disliked Reynolds & Jayne quite alot (unlikeable chauvinists imo) and I wasn't keen on the hokey accents which seemed exaggerated and put on. The female characters however were pretty good (as well as being stunning).

It is quite simply a fantastic show.

And just to bring a bit of balance. :)

Firefly is just barely above intolerable. It's slow, many of the characters are annoying (without intending to be) and the whole premise borders on ridiculous. The episodes themselves are on the whole poor, with only one or two towards the end that could be classed as average. And the theme tune is the most annoying that I've ever had the misfortune to hear.

However saying that what does it matter what anyone else thinks. If you're gonna buy it, then buy it and make up your own mind.

I would go the other way and say for £15 you can't go wrong. Also has the best flashback episode, I've ever seen.

My opinion is that I'm not keen on it.

Sorry, but I refuse to follow the "Joss is God" crowd and automatically love everything he does. If most people removed themselves from his backside maybe they would see it was average at best.

Oh, and I agree with Mark... godawful theme tune. This man has such a high opinion of himself it's scary (that's Joss, not Mark ;)

Why? Everyone's entitled to an opinion.

Personally, Ems, I think BtB's hit the nail on the head - why worry about what other people think? There's a danger you could go into it with too many expectations, good or bad. Best to watch it fresh and make up your own mind :)

CB and Mark are just as entitled to not care for the show as you are to love it :ermm:

OK they are sooooooo wrong but.....

Just wait until the film come out to critical acclaim then everybody who have criticised it now will be whistling a different tune, saying that they liked it from the beggining.... :whistling:

I of course think its the best thing since sliced bread...

Thanks for all the feedback, it's been really helpful. I think i'll add it to my Xmas wish list, it sounds really good. And your probably right that i won't actually know whether i like it until i watch it.

Thanks again.

Ems :)

You don't have to believe that everything JW does is genius to like Firefly. I'm not keen on quite a lot of his episodes of Angel and Buffy but I loved Firefly.

To say that Firefly fans are all uncritical Whedon worshippers is just wrong. Judging by your post it sounds like you are the person who came to Firefly with preconceptions.

CB was referring to the "Joss is God" crowd, but you have to wonder how many Buffy/Angel fans would've given two hoots about Firefly if it wasn't created by Whedon. I, for one, couldn't tell you for certain if I'd even have looked at it

I should point out at this point that I've never been one of the "Joss is God" crowd. I wasn't that big a fan of Angel. And Alien Resurrection sucks

I love Buffy and Angel, so i figured i might try something new written by Joss. Like i decided to watch Lost because it was written by the same guy as Alias, i like it, but it's not as good. It's a shame no channel has aired Firefly, cos i'd watch it if it were on tv, but i think the fact it was cancelled put most channels off.
