Title: NFL

willowroolz - September 12, 2005 08:12 AM (GMT)
Don't know if there are enough people interested in American football to make this worthwhile, but I thought I'd start a thread for it, especially having watched the Dolphins annihilate the Broncos last night ( :lmao: )

I was very surprised. The first half was the same old story, the Fins had no offense at all but the defense kept Denver down to one field goal. Second half the offense came alive and Miami score four touchdowns. That's almost as many as they scored in the whole of last season

The Giants looked impressive too. Looks like they've got a real star in the making in Ely Manning

Yay-For-Me - September 12, 2005 08:47 AM (GMT)
Sorry Steve :( I just don't get it. I usually understand most sport but American Football isn't one of them  Give me Ice Hockey any day

Yay, an American footie thread :yahoo:

i never really understood the rules

willowroolz - September 13, 2005 08:38 AM (GMT)

4 attempts to move the ball at least 10 yards, if you do it then you get another 4 goes, if you don't do it by the 3rd attempt then use the 4th to kick the ball down the field and let the other side have a go.

What else is there to understand?

prophecy girl - September 13, 2005 08:52 AM (GMT)
right :ponder: now if you explain it like that :)

goth willow fan - September 13, 2005 09:19 AM (GMT)
Ooh! 49ers in opening win under new Head Coach shocker! :o :yahoo:

willowroolz - September 13, 2005 09:29 AM (GMT)
I can see it now: it's going to be a Fins/9er's Superbowl :yahoo:

Not necessarily this season, though

Just a thought.......Where are the Saints going to play their home games.....their stadium must be a bit trashed.....and it would be a bit difficult for fans to get there.....what with all the police and National guard about??? :ponder:

willowroolz - September 13, 2005 01:08 PM (GMT)
I wondered that too:

If we're going to have threads about NFL and NHL what about NASCAR...

I still cant believe that (though I am a fan) NFL gets a whole nights coverage on C5, plus NHL and Baseball getting similar coverage during their seasons, NASCAR, which has just as big a following in the states gets nothing on terrestrial TV for the NEXTEL cup, and 45mins a week for the BUSCH series........and earlier in the year when it followed the live basketball on C5, if the basketball overran the NASCAR was chopped..... :guns:

In case anyone is interested....the chase for the NEXTEL cup is now down to the top 10 drivers.......

Tony Stewart #40 Home Depot Chevy.
Greg Biffle #16 National Guard Ford.
Rusty Wallace #2 Miller Lite Dodge.
Jimmie Johnson #48 Lowes Chevy.
Kurt Busch #97 Sharpie Ford.
Mark Martin #6 Viagra Ford.
Jeremy Mayfield #19 Dodge dealers Dodge.
Carl Edwards #99 Office Depot Ford.
Matt Kenseth #17 DeWalt Ford.
Ryan Newman #12 Alltel Dodge.

5 Fords in the top 10.......all owned by Jack Roush.... :o

Of course, if you want to watch a bunch of amateurs rather than the real thing that's up to you :snooty: :p

 Brilliant, Steve
Actually most of the players in this country are from NHL  :p except for a few very good british ones

Don't really follow the NHL anymore, never have time :(

willowroolz - September 14, 2005 12:26 PM (GMT)
They're the NHL rejects :snooty:

I went to see the London Knights a few times, it was great fun even if the standard of hockey wasn't too brilliant

I'll probably make an effort to post NHL results and standings from time to time :)

willowroolz - September 14, 2005 12:31 PM (GMT)

The trouble is I've been brought up on British Hockey. So to me the standard has greatly improved, if you compare now with the mid 80's  I did go to see a NHL game played at the Wembley Arena about 10 years ago and I have to say the standard was a bit higher but not much, just less fights

London Knights are not very good  Much better teams out there

Never been able to get into American football, went to see a game once and just got confused. Someone tried to explain the rules to me but I had to admit to being a girl

willowroolz - September 14, 2005 01:00 PM (GMT)

Another Patriots fan here, have been for the past 20 years and not just a recent bandwagon jumper, honest!! I think we are in a good position to challenge again for the Super Bowl, although I'm slightly worried about the effect of the loss of the Bill Belichick's offensive and defensive coordinators will have on the team. Good win against the Raiders last Sunday, and I'm sure we can beat the Panthers this week too.

I've been a fan of the Pats for a while as well........the first full televised game I ever watched was the Superbowl (somethingorother) where the Pats got thorougly humiliated by the Chicago Bears and their mobile refrigeration unit....always one to support the underdog.....(hey I'm an Aberdeen fan) I've followed the Pats ever since.........through years in the doldrums....(or is that the rockies in American terms)......till their rollercoaster last few seasons.....

One good sign is that a lot of the big hitting teams of last season lost their first game this year.........hope that bodes well..... :)

Don't remind me about Super Bowl XX!!! :fear: I still have nightmares even now!! :D

willowroolz - September 16, 2005 07:15 AM (GMT)
I can't remember the first game I saw (I think it was the Bears/Pats Superbowl - sorry guys!), but the first game that made me sit up and get interested was the Dolphins v the Jets in about '86, I think. The lead changed hands God knows how many times until the Jets scored a TD in the final 10 seconds to level the scores at 45 a piece (it was a very defensive game  ). The Jets went on to win 51-45 in OT, and I've been a Dolphins fan ever since

goth willow fan - September 16, 2005 09:01 AM (GMT)
The firstgame I remember seeing in it's entirety was Superbowl XIX - sorry Steve

Joe Montana's 49ers completely blew me away and I've been a 9er ever since.

I was sorry for the Pats in SB XX, they had had an epic struggle to get there all year with QB Steve Grogan and then to get steamrollered like that...

49ers - Team of the 80s :yahoo:

willowroolz - September 16, 2005 09:21 AM (GMT)
I'm not going to win this one

Yes they were the team of the 80s. Joe Montana was the finest quarterback I've ever seen

Mind you, there were a few great QBs around back then: Marino, Elway, Jim Kelly, Ken O'Brien. Weren't they called the Class of '83 or something?

goth willow fan - September 16, 2005 09:30 AM (GMT)
Yep, that was a bumper year for great QBs :)

willowroolz - September 19, 2005 07:16 AM (GMT)
