Okay, let's try this again. Best to break the ice by just sort of doing a
round-up of what's going on and what's coming and suchlike.

I'll try to address some of the questions that have come up about what's coming
up.

On the movies DVDs, and what's inside: the main thing is that we've got
commentaries on literally every one of them. Mike Vejar and I did a commentary
on In the Beginning, I did one with John Iacovelli on The Gathering, and
another with Janet Greek and Tracy Scoggins on River of Souls. I can't
remember now if I solo'd on A Call to Arms or if Mike was there as well (it all
blurs after a while...I've done something like fifteen of these things by now).

There's a separate cast commentary on Thirdspace with, I think, Pat, Jeff,
Jesus Trevino, and one or two others.

On the Crusade DVDs, there's one commentary I did on the original pilot (once
WB and I came to a meeting of minds, to wit, "I'm gonna say what happened to
the show, what *really* happened...you got a problem with that?"). There's a
second commentary track with Fiona, Janet, Peter Woodward and Carrie Dobro.

(We interrupt this message with a coded message for our friends in England and
Australia: keep your eyes on the horizon.)

One oddity...constant readers will remember a while back when I was asked what
TMoS was, and I provided a list of things it *wasn't*. The aforementioned
oddity is...one of those things has come up as an adjunct to TMoS.

Also, expect word fairly soon-ish about a new series of B5 novels.

Elsewhere on the prose front...Straczynski Unplugged is out now, and
Tribulations will be coming out in December.

I've turned in all three final Rising Stars scripts, and the first issue of the
last arc comes out in October, I hear.

Next week a new arc and a new artist starts on Amazing Spider-Man, and it's a
stinking cool issue. You can read a preview of the whole issue for free at:

http://www.milehighcomics.com/firstlook/marvel/spidey509/

On other projects...I'm making sudden progress with the medieval play I've been
twiddling with for the last few years, and may have it done in the next couple
of months. Once that happens, my plan is to do a limited, small production for
two weeks or so here in LA, just to see how the text works with an audience,
then take it away for another few months, twiddle with it some more, then go
for a larger venue. I may do something similar in London, since I may be
spending a bit amount of time there fairly soon.

And for those who've asked, I won't be in attendence at San Diego Comic Con
this year due to a variety of commitments.

Oh...and I've been offered an EP position on a network series, and while I
don't usually do that on shows I don't create or develop, when I heard what
this project was, I had to get on board. We still have to negotiate a deal,
and work out how that will interface with the stuff that'll be going on later
in the year, but fortunately the start date for the series should work out, at
least at this point.

Sounds promising on all fronts.

So do we get a special really no holds barred account then :)

There were a couple of useful little nuggets buried in those posts. The first, yes, the Crusade commentaries sound like they'll be most "informative" :)

Secondly, Joe's mentioning that he hadn't conceived Richard not being part of the new project. Looking like an original series cast movie.

A new line of novels coming out as well.

Next year could be a massive B5 year.

goth willow fan - June 15, 2004 11:06 PM (GMT)
Yeah I got the impression it was an original cast gig too.

and yay to the prospect of new novels.

Crichton Kicks - June 15, 2004 11:08 PM (GMT)
Wonder what the series is that he mentioned the EP gig about ??

Fingers crossed that Joe has the sense to make sure the movie works as a backdoor pilot as well. Although, I really don't think we have anything to worry about on that score ;)

goth willow fan - June 15, 2004 11:15 PM (GMT)
Well that's what ACTA and LOTR were, so I expect he knows what he's doing ;)

As for the EP - he sounds quite keen to do it (whatever 'it' is).

Crichton Kicks - June 15, 2004 11:20 PM (GMT)
Let's just hope the "other" show doesn't divert his attention too much :)

goth willow fan - June 15, 2004 11:21 PM (GMT)
Sounds very much like he's being careful that it doesn't :)

Crichton Kicks - June 15, 2004 11:32 PM (GMT)
yeah I don't really think there's much danger of it, B5's his show afterall, I don't think there's anything that would come before that to him, not televisually speaking anyway.

Just read in Dreamwatch that a production office for a B5 related film project is up and running in England

I can't remember where I heard this and this may only be a rumour, but I heard that he had been offered the position of executive producer on enterprise. Surely that couldn't be true? Surely he wouldn't lower himself and help make Star Trek Enterprise into something decent?

Crichton Kicks - November 17, 2004 05:52 PM (GMT)
That one was knocking around a few months ago. The story differs based on whether it's Joe or Paramount telling it. The fact that Enterprise did go on to get a new EP, would tend to indicate that perhaps he was offered a role.

Joe, and Bryce Zabel (Dark Skies) also wrote a treatment for a new proposed Star Trek series. Unsurprisingly nothing further's been heard on that subject.

I'm pretty sure that Joe's since confirmed that Enterprise wasn't the series he was referring to. I did here somewhere a month or so back a rumour of what it might be but I'll be damned if I can remember it now

Of course, it's widely anticipated that Star Wars will go to series in 2006.... :whistling:

JMS doing Star Wars the series! Now that could be freaking cool... Potentially anyway!

All depends on how much creative freedom he'd get. I'd imagine that George would be a meddler :(

I agree it depends on how much creative control is given and No doubt George Lucas would have plenty of input and ideas. But I seriously doubt he would be too meddlesome as the movies are his babies and I think he would be less hands-on in a TV series. Only time will tell what happens and if JMS gets up and running with Babylon 5 he may well be too busy in any case .

Crichton Kicks - November 19, 2004 06:15 PM (GMT)
Joe's hinted in a few places now that TMOS may well serve as a backdoor pilot. Fingers crossed.

Re Star Wars, I'm sure George has said already that he plans on being more 'hands off' with any TV series, but you really have to wonder how that'll pan out. Think of all the obsessive tweaking he's done to the original trilogy over recent years ;)

Besides, Joe's too good for Star Wars

True, JMS is too good for or Star Wars but it would be interesting to see what he could do with it given creative control over a four or five-year arc.

You can see why he's tinkered with the original Star Wars because he's just trying to make everything gel together better as the 30 year gap between ep IV & ep III really shows. I have no opinion on the Hans solo thing with gredo shooting first in the altered version because I can't really remember that sequence well enough. I know this is heresy among Star Wars fans but I like all the new CGI touches that brings the whole Star Wars saga vision together. I like how they are trying to tie both trilogy's together and although I haven't seen the new DVDs I think the changes are probably for the best.

Crichton Kicks - November 20, 2004 03:17 PM (GMT)
The Star Wars changes fall into two camps; the first are the ones that serve to better the original. There are more than a few though that serve little purpose at all, and serve only to disrupt the original. The extended scenes at the end of TESB are a good example.
