At the beginning of the year, we reported about StarTrek.com's interest in whether or not fans wanted to see Star Trek: The Animated Series on DVD. It looks like the feedback was positive, because this DVD is in-the-works!
David Gerrold is well-known as the inventor of the Tribble, Quadrotriticale, and one of the most popular episodes of the original Star Trek series around, "The Trouble With Tribbles", among other contributions. Gerrold returned to the world of Star Trek in the very first spin-off of the series, 1973's Star Trek: The Animated Series, in which he wrote the follow-up story "More Tribbles, More Troubles" among others.
Now David reports at his own website about the upcoming release for DVD of another show he (and other Star Trek alumni) worked on: The Land of the Lost. While talking about that, he mentions great news about Star Trek: The Animated Series:
Plans are also underway for a DVD box-set of Star Trek: The Animated Series, with commentaries from cast and writers.
To further validate this information, The Digital Bits has posted a Rumor Mill note that TAS and Star Trek: Enterprise are on-the-way to DVD according to their sources, and they mention Gerrold's website as a way to corroborate the TAS info.
Star Trek: The Animated Series has made it to home video before, despite some who claim otherwise. Besides episodes on VHS release, a LaserDisc release also made it out with the series:

So a DVD hasn't been a far-fetched idea, especially now that concerns about the Filmation library have been resolved (Filmation handled the animation work on TAS).
So how far along is this? Well, the aforementioned commentaries are still being set up, and haven't been recorded yet. And though there is obvious interest in getting this in-stores by the holidays, Paramount already has a Trek-heavy schedule for the end of this year, what with Star Trek: TOS re-releases in season sets, and the rest of Voyager to release as well. It's most likely that The Digital Bits is correct, and that 2005 is the year that we'll see this compilation.

I used to enjoy the animated series. Some of the stories were very good, and the fact that most of the original cast were present and accounted for was good. But the animation itself was pretty poor, and the repetetive music was really irritating (oh no! Now I can hear it in my head! ).

Greetings Mr Armour :)
I always remember TAS as being the one shown early mornings during the holidays.

you are correct Angel, saturday mornings on BBC2 if my memory is not too drink addles to be believed. The thing is I can only seem to remember 2 or three episodes, which continually bugs me. The more tribbles, more troubles one, I think everyone remembers, I also have a dim memory of an episode where spock travelled through time and met his own son.... And then theres the one with the the giant starship graveyard.... Oh my god it's all coming back to me now, I cant wait for this dvd release :D :D :D

I actually only remember a few episodes myself. I think it's YESTERYEAR with Spock travelling through time, although that could be completely wrong of course. Then there THE COUNTER CLOCK INCIDENT, and The sequal to SHORE LEAVE, the name of which escapes me right now.

And it's finally coming!

Yesterday we passed along a Rumor Mill post from The Digital Bits website that Star Trek: The Animated Series was finally on the way to DVD in 2006, probably in the second half of the year. Later in the day our friends there posted a follow-up - a news story this time, not a Rumor Mill post - which states the following:
Well... it's about time. Seriously, after all the false starts and rumors, it pleases me to no end to be able to say what I'm about to say. Yes... Paramount has now officially confirmed to us that they are w**king to release Star Trek: The Animated Series on DVD in 2006. No additional details are available at this time, other than what we've already posted in The Rumor Mill this week, which is basically that the release date is likely to be in the second half of the year to coincide with the franchise's anniversary. Still, given how long fans have been waiting for this series to reach DVD, I think it's darned good news, and now it's official too. We'll keep our eye on this title and let you know when there's more to report.
That was Bill Hunt of TheDigitalBits.com speaking, and he deserves all the credit for the scoop...congrats! We're doing the warp drive dance here for sheer joy of this long-awaited confirmation. Stay tuned, and we'll let you know more as developments happen!

Is it really coming....2006 is now upon us and I have yet to see anything in the release lists???
I actually have a few of these animated ones on DVD, recorded years ago when it must have been repeated on BBC2....yes during the school holidays!!! Haven't watched them in ages, but I can imagine that the quality has degraded, they must be over 10 years old....

willowroolz - July 18, 2006 11:15 AM (GMT)
I'll pencil it in for when I've caught up with the Batman, Superman and Justice League TAS releases
Crichton Kicks - July 20, 2006 09:56 AM (GMT)
Apparently, besides the extras listed above they're also w**king on documentaries and commentary tracks featuring behind-the-scenes people, including writers D.C. Fontana, David Wise and David Gerrold amongst others speaking about their respective penned episodes  And regular Trek scribes Judith and Garfield Reese-Stevens will also be contributing. It's also rumoured that Walter Koenig may be on hand to talk about the episode he wrote for the series (The Infinite Vulcan).
This is looking like a must-buy!
