Stardate: Unknown Bashir is chosen as the model for Starfleet's next Emergency Medical Holographic Doctor. During the process it is revealed that Julian was illegally genetically enhanced as a child, rendering him a genius. However, his father must now face a jail term or his son Julian will be court-martialled from Starfleet.

What a fantastic episode  We get to see arguably the best thing Voyager gave to Trek (Bob Picardo as the EHM/Zimmerman), and unlike a lot of Trek crossovers, his character doesn't feel forced in at all.

The episode takes an odd turn - to start off you have what looks to be a more light-hearted episode; something reinforced whenever the EMH is used (I love the scene where the EMH is turned on to transfer his data to the Bashir hologram - if only to hear the indignant horror of the EMH as he realised just what he's being replaced by - scenes like this make me think about wanting to watch a few Voyagers again :o ). Also there's a lovely scene where O'Brien is playing with the Bashir hologram and making him walk into a wall again and again and again :)

Halfway through, however, it suddenly going into a differnt direction when it's revelaed that our favourite doctor is a genetically modified mutant - when this was first announced it felt very out of the blue, but trough this rewatch I've noticed that there have been several clues hinting at this - for example his exceptional racquetball in 'Rivals'. Still, I'm sure it's contradicted somewhere - there's one episode where he says how he fixed his teddy bear when he was 5 - if he was a clumsy oaf before his modification when he was 7, how on earth could he perform 'delicate surgery' on poor Kukulaka?

Also Rom gets some wonderful moments while dealing with his love for Leeta - I love the part at the beginning, where he's been psyching himself up to ask her out, only to just say 'Leeta....... (silence).......Bye' :D Add to that the lovely scene at the end where Leeta and Zimmerman can hear this drawn out 'WAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaait' as Rom runs full tilt to stop Leeta leaving (although I found it very off that Leeta, who's admitted she loves Rom and knows he's very shy, is ready to chuck it all in for the first smooth-talking guy who shows an interest in her - was she perhaps just testing Rom?)

I think the only problem I had with the episode was yet another interminable 'Crewman can't get on with his parents and reconciles by the end' - I had hoped DS9 was better than this :(

(Hmmm - comparing this review to the others it's obvious which one was my favourite :))

Another good episode. Pretty much agree with everything Phillip said. Only other bit to mention would be O'Brien and Bashir playing darts at the end with Bashir being made to stand further back

They should have given her a show of her own and called it "Leeta and friends" :naughty:

Now it's quite conceivable that some people might not remember who Leeta is, so to that end, perhaps a visual aid, just to help them remember......
