Title: Lost, As A Cult???
Craig G - August 22, 2005 11:12 AM (GMT)
hey i was just wondering. . . yeah i know that is rarely for the good of the world lol.
but with the viewing figures that lost generates in the USA, can it be called a cult show? With the sheer volume of watchers week in and week out, isn't it plain old 'main stream' :fear:
lol
but hey that doesnt mean that the show isnt amaxzing and shouldnt be discussed, as it clearly is and should be :)
just a random thought

Hi Craig, haven't seen you on here for a while
:)
I think rather than the viewing figures its the show's content that defines if it is cult. :ponder:
I'm sure more shows of this genre would do better with ratings if they were promoted as well. :)

Hi Craig nice to see you again, good question by the way :) I think in this case the term cult refers to the fact it has fans like disscuss it in groups like we do and by dvds etc.The American TV Networks don't allow for shows with small loyal fan base to survive e.g. Tru Calling because they have to keep advertisers happy.

I don't consider it Cult in the true meaning of the word - I think it's too mainstream, but the content would lend itself to being called that.

These days "Cult" has moved away from the old definition of old show that still has a dedicated following and is now broadly used to describe any show of a fantastical or science fictiony nature even on a major network with a huge following.

yeah, i have been away for a while, thats the problem with moving away from home and not getting the internet connected untill a month later, damn i was getting withdrawl lol
but now am back and have finally gotten a broadband connection, all the better for the geekery ways :)
so we can call it cult, due to the nature of the shows contents, cool.
just wasn't sure what the show was viewed as.

I second that explanation.

Writer 'sues over Lost TV show' A writer is suing ABC Television for allegedly stealing his idea for its hit show Lost, according to reports. Anthony Spinner filed a legal action in Los Angeles claiming he was contracted in 1977 to write a script for a show called Lost about a plane crash.
He alleged he was hired to produce and direct the programme which was to be produced by ABC.
The action cites ABC and Touchstone Television, according to Hollywood Reporter. Both declined to comment.
Mr Spinner alleged he was hired by Sid and Marty Krofft Productions to write a drama about a group who survive a plane crash on an island which strange creatures inhabit.
He said he has a signed contract which promised creator and writer credits, royalties and a percentage of profits. He is seeking unspecified damages.
Lost has proved a critical and ratings hit since launching in the US, winning a clutch of Emmy nominations.
It centres around a plane crash on an apparently deserted island, slowing revealing the complicated life stories of the survivors.
The show has also proved popular in the UK where it launched on Channel 4 on 10 August with six million viewers.

Typical. This happens frequently and they usually drop completely out of the news because the case was settled out of court (with a non-disclosure agreement between the parties), or tossed out of court.

It always amazed me that Tribune got away with ripping off the X-Men for as long as they did with Mutant X
