Want More Spike?

Whedonverse is taking yet another opportunity to spotlight those fans who refuse to fade away by showcasing their efforts to keep the verse alive. Previously, we wrote about the efforts of fans to promote a Faith spin-off and a Buffy/Angel movie. This time, we’re highlighting those fans who want more Spike.

Spike Raffle

For those of you who miss the striking blonde one, here’s a chance to take him home with you. From now until August 22, every $5 you donate to the Whedonverse Multimedia Project will automatically enter you into our drawing to win a 12" Sideshow Human-faced Spike action figure. According to Sideshow Collectibles, this action figure is a limited edition with only 7500 in circulation and is completely sold out. With each entry, you will be assigned a raffle ticket number. The winning number will be chosen at random on August 23rd.

Coincidently, a representative of the Whedonverse Multimedia Project will be attending the Sci Fi Expo in Toronto to see James Marsters. According to Steve Himber, fans will be given the opportunity to wish James a belated happy birthday at the event - his birthday is August 20th. It would be an honor for the Project to be able to tell James about love fans still have for him, the desire to see more Spike as well as all the generous donations fans have provided to place Buffy, Angel and Firefly DVDs into public libraries and other organizations. A birthday card will be handed to him containing the names of all those who donated during this raffle.

We are currently trying to complete the funding needed to provide the Horicon Library in Wisconsin with a set of Buffy, Angel and Firefly. In addition, we hope to begin fundraising to send care packages to soldiers in Iraq and/or Afghanistan. The care packages would include at least one dvd, plus other essential items as requested by the soldier on AnySoldier.com. Our waiting list contains those organizations who have contacted the project to request dvds.

Interview with the Support Spike Campaign

Whedonverse.org corresponded with Teep from Support Spike to talk about the efforts of Spike fans.

The campaign is called Support Spike, in what ways does the group support the character?

Spike’s story became important to so many of us that we wanted to do what we could to see that his character was important to the story on BtVS. Over the years, we have contacted the networks and those responsible for licensing requesting more Spike merchandise as well as just expressing that we would like to continue to see Spike as often as possible.

Why do you think Spike is a good character for a future project?

Although Spike had a strong story on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, many of us feel that the character has enough strength to support a story of his own. In some circumstances, the character was there to serve the story or to make a point about other characters or other situations. We’ve seen glimpses of Spike’s past and his potential and it has left us wanting more.

Is the campaign open to other characters being included in the project as well?

Support Spike has always supported other characters and any and all characters from the Buffyverse are welcome. We’ve included postcards showing Spike featured with Andrew, Xander, Illyria, Faith, and Buffy but we have a multitude of preferences and wouldn’t exclude any character in the ’verse from being included.

Have you gotten any feedback from James Marsters, Joss Whedon or others about the campaign?

Both James and Joss have been strong supporters of the campaigns over the years. Joss made a point of mentioning the Support Spike "Destiny" advertisements in Variety and Hollywood Reporter during one of his interviews and has sent thank you letters to those who participated in our Valentine’s Charity Fundraiser for the American Heart Association last year. Additionally, James expresses his interest in continuing the character in interviews and at public events as well as mentioning that his importance in the story, his addition to Angel, and his interest in continuing the character can be directly attributed to the fans and our support.

Has the campaign tied any of its w**k toward supporting charity?

Support Spike and The Bloody Awful Poet Society have co-coordinated several charity projects. Over the last few years, we’ve actively supported the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, James Marsters charity of choice, through direct donations, charity auctions, and other fundraising drives. Additionally, our 2004 Valentine Campaign last year included charity donations to the American Heart Association in honor of our favorite couples and for our 2005 Valentine campaign we commemorated the anniversary of the cancellation of Angel by sending a Lily bouquet to Joss Whedon and the WB where one dollar from every flower purchased was donated directly to the AHA as well.

This year, in addition to our usual charity drive, SS and BAPS are also supporting a charity project that has a Traveling Spike doll visiting various locations around the world. Pictures of his travels and stories about his adventures will be collected into a scrap book that will be auctioned for charity. More information can be found at Traveling Spike’s blog:

How can fans participate in the campaign?

Is there a campaign against a Spike movie or series? Or a petition maybe because I'd sign that.

Feel free to start one ;)

Bill The Bloodless - August 17, 2005 06:00 PM (GMT)
I would but I suspect an online petition might crash the whole web under the weight of the number of people wanting to sign. ;)

I wouldn't mind a Conner or a Spike spin-off.

prophecy girl - August 18, 2005 10:48 AM (GMT)
if it was ripper or wicca willow spin off .............. :)

Craig G - August 18, 2005 02:39 PM (GMT)
no no no, we have had enough spike, and if he got the spin-off it would be a imitation of ANGEL the series. Vampire with a soul, fighting the good fight.

I would rather see a new show on one of the most unused members of the angelverse, Illyria.

They clearly had a story set out for the character, after the transformation, and was cut short with the shows demise, so i would be intrested in seeing where they were going to go with that?

just me?

Margot C - August 18, 2005 02:44 PM (GMT)
Noooooo!

Ew. Wasn't it bad enough that we had to put up with him on Angel?!

Margot

Maria - August 18, 2005 02:59 PM (GMT)
Do I take it there's a little bit of anti Spike vibes going out here?

Maybe if there's no spinoff they could do more flashback? Maybe SPike could be writing his story down for a book to be published to heighten peoples awareness of Vampires and each episode would see a flashback from Spikes past?

OK granted it wouldn't last several seasons like Angel but it could easily be made into 12 or even 15 hour long episodes?

prophecy girl - August 19, 2005 10:00 AM (GMT)
or faith spin off (faith on the road, looking for slayer around america)

More on the "Spike" Movie - Spike The Vampire On Mutant Enemy’s “Front Burner” ?
From Aintitcool.com - 2005-08-21st

SPIKE THE VAMPIRE On Mutant Enemy’s “Front Burner”?? FIREFLY God Tim Minear Asked To Write And Direct??

I am - Hercules!!

How giddy does that headline make you? I can tell you it makes me super-extra-giddy!! The funniest, smartest and best writer or director on “Angel” not named Joss is Joss Whedon’s pick to write and direct a new “Spike” TV movie?? F*ck. Me.

From zap2it.com, July 22, 2005:

The "Smallville" stint may not be the only w**k on The WB for [James] Marsters. Network head David Janollari says he would "gladly" do a TV movie featuring the Spike character if Marsters and "Buffy"/"Angel" creator Joss Whedon want to do one.

From E! Online, Aug. 19, 2005:

“I just got off the phone with someone who talked to Joss [Whedon] yesterday, who claimed that [the "Spike The Vampire"] project was very much on the front burner. Joss has never told me anything like that. He’s checked with me twice, to see if I was interested. I said yes twice, and both times he’s been very clear that this doesn’t mean that anything’s going forward, [he] just wants to have [his] ducks in a row.” - James Marsters

From Whedonesque.com, Aug. 20, 2005:

"I had lunch with Joss and he asked me if I wanted to write and direct some blonde vampire movie thing. Should I do it? (I of course said yes right off, still) Anything under 13 hours scares me. And anything over 13 hours... um. I got nothin’." - Tim Minear Now, Whedonesque (rather irritatingly) does not reveal to whom Minear told this, or where the quote appeared, so I wrote Tim and asked after its legitimacy. Mr. Minear’s reply:

Yeah, that’s me. Probably shouldn’t have said anything, but what the hell. You’re behind this somehow, aren’t you? Whatta maroon!! Yeah, Tim, sure. Like some fucking little Internet TV gossip is going to play a role in getting you hired to revive the entire Buffiverse!

I'm surprised that this hasn't caused any comment. A Spike movie is pretty much confirmed and no one has anything to say about it? Not even the Spike haters? C'mon people, the Buffyverse ain't dead yet.

"I am my thoughts" - August 24, 2005 08:16 AM (GMT)
They 'confirmed' a Ripper spin-off, but I can't see any sign of Giles' further adventures

It is dead for me. I have no particular desire to see more of a character who imo had more of a detrimental effect on latter seasons than any other. The time to move on has long passed.

laughitupfuzzball - August 24, 2005 10:07 AM (GMT)
Depends on the story - I have faith in Tim :)

I'll believe it when I see it, hasn't this rumour been going around forever? And nothing seems concrete yet, it's all "so and so would love to do........" etc

And if they were going to do some sort of spin off or movie, I'd rather see it based on another character (like Connor :ph43r: ) rather than Spike who IMO has had too much exposure. In more ways than one :ermm:

Sparkle Motion - August 24, 2005 10:17 AM (GMT)
I'd rather stick needles in my eyes and have my toenails pulled out by diseased pygmies than have a Spike film.

A repulsive character who ruined my favourite show.

prophecy girl - August 24, 2005 10:20 AM (GMT)
if the film was about evil spike, maybe

but souled spike ............ we already got 5 seasons of a souled vampire

The Buffyverse is dead and this continued poking at it's corpse is pointless. Any spin-off should have happened ages ago, it has been too long now.

What is the first page of this topic then? ;)
I think they should just leave the franchise. I don't want a Spike spin-off, I hated the character when Buffy ended.

The difference is that Tim Minear has said he has actually been asked to do it, which suggests that wheels are actually being put in motion.

Can't say I'm fussed about seeing any more Spike either

smellyphagor - August 24, 2005 07:24 PM (GMT)
I promise this wasn't my intention, but the reaction to my post has made me see the attraction of trolling- it has been like sticking a stick in an ants nest.

Anyhow, my 2 pence worth- I don't care who is in it, it could star Clem so far as I care. My point of view about spin offs is that I'm for them so long as the idea is good. I don't get the Spike hate, so I'm quite happy for it to be about him- indeed, it is hard to see, realistically, who else it could be about.

So, if it does happen, I'll wait till I've seen it before I judge.

endgame - August 24, 2005 07:41 PM (GMT)
It's not that I hate Spike, it's just that I don't really see what else they can do with the character  . I'd much rather see a spin off centred around one of the other characters that didn't get quite as much exposure as Spike (and I still think a Connor spin off would be a good idea :ph43r: ). Of course, Spike has a huge fan base and I concede that a spin off or tv movie that goes ahead will be based around Spike. And I'd probably watch it, regardless of who the lead character was :)

John Brawn - August 24, 2005 08:12 PM (GMT)
Spike was a totally useless addendum to S5 so what on earth they are going up to dream up for him beggars belief. If Tim dreams up the equivalent of a killer ap then maybe it will be worth it but I doubt it. Also James was looking awfully drawn in S5. Maybe we should send him some monkey glands in the post. sk
