New Line have hired British director Anand Tucker (Hilary And Jackie) to helm the first instalment of the Philip Pullman trilogy His Dark Materials. Fantasy flick The Golden Compass is the most ambitious and expensive outing for the studio since The Lord Of The Rings, so the choice is a bold one. The suits have interviewed 50 directors since December when Chris Weitz dropped out after admitting he was daunted by the challenge. (Wuss.) Tucker eventually won the job with a presentation that included a 20-page outline, conceptual art and visual effects demos. FYI: The Golden Compass follows a girl who encounters shape-shifting creatures, witches and other fantastical characters on a journey to rescue her best friend. The moral of the story is: get a new compass. |
