SATURDAY 06 AUGUST Film Washington Square 1:30pm - 3:40pm Five VIDEO Plus+: 92270964 Subtitled Previously filmed as The Heiress in 1949, this romantic drama reverts to novelist Henry James's original title, with Jennifer Jason Leigh as the dowdy spinster in 19th century America, whose chance of marriage is cruelly denied her by her domineering father, Albert Finney. It starts promisingly as director Agnieszka Holland sets the scene with a breathtaking camera swoop from above the treetops to a bedroom where a beautiful woman has just died, bloodily, in childbirth. From then on, however, Holland is less assured and the film ultimately fails to live up to its early promise. Finney has real menace as the unforgiving father and Ben Chaplin acquits himself well as the gold-digging Morris Townsend, but, whereas Olivia de Havilland won an Oscar for her crushed violet in director William Wyler's masterly version, Leigh is far too mannered for sympathy.

Did anyone see Michael Vartan recently on the big screen in "Monster-in-Law". Well, physically he was in it but he certainly didn't make much of an impression in an incredibly underwritten part. Oh, and the film was awful too.

SUNDAY 14 AUGUST Film Daredevil 10:15pm - 12:10am Sky Movies 6 VIDEO Plus+: 9799559 Subtitled, Widescreen There are redeeming features to this latest, high-kicking Marvel comic adaptation - not least its strong visuals and attractive cast - but these do not add up to a satisfying whole. As a child, Matt Murdock is blinded by radioactive waste that simultaneously heightens his other senses. He grows up to be a New York lawyer (played by Ben Affleck) who doubles as a nocturnal, leather-clad crime-fighter. As the first instalment of a potential franchise, the film goes through the motions of setting up the story and characters, with the flashbacks to Matt's boyhood the strongest episode. Thereafter the narrative gets flabby - introducing a soppy love story involving Jennifer Garner of TV's Alias and a cursory game of cat-and-mouse against Colin Farrell's poorly sketched villain - and the action is sapped of clarity by rushed editing, and subtlety by the relentless heavy metal soundtrack. It's Batman without the camp - or the memorable villains.
Directed by: Mark Steven Johnson Filmed in: 2003

THURSDAY 18 AUGUST Film To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar 11:00am - 1:00pm Sky Movies 7 VIDEO Plus+: 1128692 Subtitled This American riposte to The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert is a good concept in search of a plot. The concept? Dress macho movie stars Patrick Swayze and Wesley Snipes in evening gowns, sit back, and watch the camp laughs roll in. And sometimes they do. The plot? Three New York drag queens on the road to Hollywood get stuck in small-town America. Cue the culture-clash messages about tolerance, Aids awareness and sexual freedom. Although sentimentally shallow and nowhere near as gutsy as its Australian counterpart, Beeban Kidron's frock opera is diverting enough, with the hugely under-rated John Leguizamo giving an amazing performance as Chi Chi Rodriguez, the cha-cha queen from hell.

THURSDAY 08 SEPTEMBER Film Never Been Kissed
8:00pm - 10:00pm ITV2 VIDEO Plus+: 75137 Subtitled, Widescreen
Including Entertainment News Update Drew Barrymore does what she does best - cute, funny romance - in this simple teen comedy. She plays a bumbling young copy editor on the Chicago Sun-Times who gets a chance to prove herself as a reporter when she's sent undercover to a high school to find out what students get up to nowadays. It also gives her the chance to rewrite her own painful school memories - she was the class nerd - and get that first, memorable kiss she never had. She also falls for English teacher Michael Vartan, which sets off a rather predictable chain of events. Yet, thanks to Barrymore's infectious performance, a fun turn from David Arquette (as her slightly odd older brother) and a minor role for Leelee Sobieski, this is enjoyable fare.

I love this film but it seems to be on at least once every month! It's overkill! (I shouldn't really complain, I've got it on DVD anyway.)
Laura - August 31, 2005 10:05 PM (GMT)
I love NBK too, my flatmate and I share it on DVD since it was in one of those 3 for £20 promotions that we split between us. It's what got me to buy Alias on DVD since seeing MV in it reminded me that I had enjoyed the few episodes I had seen.

Sort of. :ermm:
The What to Watch segment with Paul Ross has a review of Monster-in-Law and as part of that, Paul Ross said something like ` Our own Jackie Collins spoke to one of the stars, Michael Vartan, about it ` - then there are some clips from the film and a couple of very short clips of MV talking about it.
It certainly wasn`t the two-hour documentary which I was expecting. :snooty: ;)

This is the latest from the Vartanho website -
"This Morning" info
Gemma wrote to tell us that while yes, there was a Michael Vartan interview on ITV yesterday, it was all of a few seconds long so we didn't miss much. It was just a few seconds of Michael talking about w**king with Jane Fonda and Jennifer Lopez. Since they advertised this as being a sit-down interview between Michael and Jackie Collins (and since the other interviews they've aired so far have been more substantial) we're hoping that was just a teaser. Come on, ITV! Step up!
