Title: Tos Dvd Question

John Brawn - August 3, 2005 08:43 PM (GMT)
I have just purchased TOS S1 and S2(S3 is in the post) and I was wondering why the episodes appear to be in a bizarre order on the title screen. Why is The Man Trap the 'first' episode? Is it something to do with the order they were broadcast? I thought Where No Man Has Gone Before was the sorta official pilot and it is labelled 2. Did the 'fans' insist on them being in some sort of 'correct' order? sk

Yes, there are in broadcast order (Season 1 of TOS's production order was very different to the broadcast order)

I'm not sure why they do it, since as far as I can remember every other time TOS has been releases (on VHS), it's been in production order. Presumably a quirk of the DVD people :)

It is odd, especially concerning the continuity of the series. The uniforms are different for one, and I could be wrong, but I don't think Bones is even in Where No Man Has Gone Before is he ??

It certainly makes more sense to have it as the first episode, but Phillip's right, The Man Trap was the first episode aired, hence it's the first episode on the DVD set for some reason.

I am now really irritated because Royal Mail has managed to 'misplace' my S3 somewhere between my door and the local depot. I will try again tomorrow but I am not very hopeful. I wonder what Amazon or Royal Mail for that matter do in such circumstances. sk

usually look for it (and ask the delivery guy what the heck he did) ... give a refund or sent an other "order" .... but that usually takes two weeks ......... what can i say? administration procedure

I received a phone call this morning saying they had found it so I can now sleep easy watching Spock's brain to my hearts content. I am fairly sure over the years I have somehow managed to miss quite a few episodes of S3 so I could be in for a bit of a surprise. sk

Don't forget the ultra-funny The Way to Eden John

Not meant to be funny, but that one's dated about as much as a show can.

Charlie X tonight so it could be a good while before I manage to enjoy Way to Eden. The only episode I vaguely remember seeing is Spectre of the Gun(absolutely brilliant) but that was back in the 80s most probably. I did see a poor scratchy recording of And the children shall lead(worst episode?) a while ago.

What struck on reading the episode list of S1(seen most of them) was that just about every one was a classic or memorable in some way which is more than can be said of TNG S1 or S2. sk

TOS and TNG were polar opposites in that regard. You're quite right, most of the gems that we all know and love from TOS were indeed season one episodes. By contrast TNG's first few seasons were blighted by mediocrity, with the very rare exception.

That being said though, TOS seemed to go downhill season upon season whereas Season 3 through Season 6, TNG just got better and better.

In hindsight it's hard to pick out Star Trek's pinnacle, there are so many candidates; DS9's latter seasons another one.

Very true. Mind you, having said that, I really like TOS s2

Which reminds me, I must get back to the rewatch. I haven't even unwrapped s2 yet

I came to a grinding halt mid season one

There's nothing inherantly bad about TOS Season 2, it just wasn't up to the golden standards set by the majority of Season 1.

Oh, the joys of being unable to work and stuck at home - I've gone through the first two seasons of TOS in about a week and a half.

Unfortunately this means I start Season 3 tomorrow....

Quick, go back to work :fear: :fear:

Do voluntary work. Commit a murder. Do whatever you have to to ensure that you're not at home to suffer this attrocity

 that can't be good

I'm beginning to worry about you Phillip, you actually said that as though you actually intend to go through with it!

Phillip Culley - June 28, 2007 04:16 PM (GMT)
Well, I got through the first disc somehow - I've got them in production order so I've had to endure Spectre of the Gun and Elaan of Troyius. Still, it was worth it for The Enterprise Incident

Although I'm looking to check myself in somewhere after the next disc, with And the Children Shall Lead and Spock's Brain to come :)

Crichton Kicks - June 28, 2007 05:02 PM (GMT)
The Way to Eden,

I think I'd rather burn my own eyes out than ever watch that again!

jamiearmour - June 28, 2007 05:34 PM (GMT)
I haven't (voluntarily) prayed in about 25 years, but I'll pray for you tomorrow Phillip.
