Title: Trek XI In Development?

LoobiLou - April 26, 2004 03:59 PM (GMT)
Star Trek producer Rick Berman told the British Dreamwatch magazine that he is now developing an 11th Trek movie, according to a report on the TrekWeb fan site. "I am involved in the very early stages of what could be the next Star Trek movie," Berman reportedly told the magazine. "It's something I will be producing with two other producers."

Berman said the proposed movie would be a prequel, but declined to elaborate. In the wake of the poor box-office performance of Star Trek Nemesis, the 10th film in the franchise, cast members and others have been widely quoted as saying that there will be no more Trek movies featuring the characters from The Next Generation.

Earlier, the Dark Horizons Web site reported a rumor that Paramount was developing a Starfleet Command movie project.

Berman also told the magazine that he is developing a non-Trek SF TV series with Star Trek: Enterprise producing partner Brannon Braga.

We can only hope that this prevents any future involvment with the Trek franchise. Berman wasn't bad with Piller and Braga wasn't bad with Ron Moore, but together they represent a partnership that has taken the Trek franchise to whole new depths :(

Didn't Berman once talk about a prequel series, with Kirk and co at Starfleet Academy? Sounds like this could be the movie project he's talking about. I shudder at the thought. I enjoyed Nemesis, but it was pretty much a Wrath of Khan rip-off, and that is still the only really worthwhile Trek movie there's been. They should leave Trek alone for a while. Supply has outstripped demand in recent times.

To be honest, I'll believe it when I see it - Berman's famous for being all talk :)

'This isn't your grandad's Trek' - I seem to remember him quoting just before Enterprise :)

'This isn't your grandad's Trek'

I'd rather it had captured that same level of success/popularity myself ;)

I think Manny Coto and Mike Sussman have been fantastic this season. I'd be disappointed if they didn't get a chance next year. If the show is cancelled then they should at least give that pair a decent crack at it. Just because dumb & dumber couldn't do anything with the show doesn't mean it's worthless. And let's look at this season, it's been pretty damned good, little thanks to B&B.

Well done Manny/Mike, at last you've got Trek moving in the right direction again. The only problem is there's a certain mindset of fan out there that's just had enough of Berman and his lapdog and probably won't come back with that pair still attached to the show.

I've actually been quite enjoying this season of Enterprise so I hope they get another season to try and turn things around. Berman's always been too smug for his own good, anyway!

To be honest I'd be amazed if they cancelled Enterprise now. Despite it's ratings it's still one of the better rated UPN shows and this season HAS improved dramatically over the previous two. Who knows where next season may take us ?? Could it improve even more ?? TNG didn't come into it's own until it's third season, likewise DS9 to a large extent.

Berman needs to go, 20 years with the same franchise isn't too healthy to anyone, creatively at least. Let someone else have a crack. Biggest shame that Ron Moore's moved on to pastures new, the BSG mini series was superbly written as was the fantastic Carnivale.

It's strange how many US shows do seem to have their best season in the 3rd year. STTNG, Buffy, The X Files, B5, Angel, Farscape. Just my opinion, of course!

It is odd. Although I wouldn't necessarily ascribe it to the 3rd season myself, a lot of shows I've liked I've prefered the 2nd season; Buffy, Angel, XF.

But I think as far as Trek goes, TNG, DS9 and ENT have all seemed to flourish in the 3rd years. Voyager of course never improved, but again, that's just my opinion ;)

B5, Season 3 was very, very strong, but I've always prefered season 4 to be honest. Not just the resolution of the Shadow War but also the climax of the Human civil war as well. Granted we wouldn't have had both of them there had JMS known that they'd get a 5th year, but still, he didn't, and Season 4's the better for it IMO, shame about season 5 :)

It will be nothing short of a crime if ENTERPRISE is cancelled now!!

Season 3 has been great and the new writing team have seriously improved the series especially in the last 5 or 6 weeks.

The two shows shown on sky yesterday, one was an instant classic and one was very close.

I know some people will know that I will defend STARTREK to the death but they cannot be anyone out there who dosent think it deserves a 4th series

The sad thing with Enterprise is that whilst season 3 has definitely been an improvement over the previous two seasons, the numbers haven't improved, in fact they've deteriorated yet further. At the end of the day this is what the network will be looking at when it's deciding the show's fate. Fortunately however there are certain things working in it's favour. It'll be a close call but I still fully expect a fouth season to be greenlit soon.

And it seems E2's ratings didn't help it much last night..

If Enterprise does come back, I sure as hell hope they have a plan to improve these (even if it means a broadcast slot change), as I really can't see them justifying the show when the latest reality TV show will give them much better ratings!

I wonder, if it continues like this, we'll have a Firefly situation where they suddenly drop it without broadcasting everything? :o

The problem for Enteprise, next year, is that it now needs to do what no other Trek has done before it, and actually increase it's ratings. If you look at the Neilsens for TNG, DS9 or even Voyager, all had sliding numbers across the seven years, not even one year where the numbers rose on those for the previous season.

It's ominous, however I think if they can at least halt the slide then perhaps it has a chance of living for a fifth year. Sad to say that if the numbers slide yet further next year, then the show almopst definitely won't return for a fifth season.

I don't see UPN cutting the series short mid-run. With the amount of money spent on the episodes and the lack of viable substitutes theyd more than likely continue the run to it's natural end.
