Vista opens on Microsoft Windows

Windows software runs on 90% of personal computers worldwide
Microsoft, the world's largest software maker, has said the next version of its much-delayed operating system will be known as Windows Vista.
The software, until now known by its code name Longhorn, is due for release towards the end of 2006, half a decade after the launch of Windows XP.

To hit the deadline Microsoft has already taken out a number of features it had promised for the system.

A test version will be released by 3 August, the Seattle-based firm said.

The desire is clarity - clear, confident, connected

The assault on Microsoft
How it plans to beat its rivals

Once Vista hits the market it will be the longest gap between releases of Windows systems.

On Thursday Microsoft announced fourth-quarter net profits of $3.7bn (£2.11bn) for the three months up to 30 June 2005.

Chief financial officer Chris Liddell said Microsoft would benefit greatly in the next financial year from new products.

Improved security

Microsoft's flagship software already runs on about 90% of personal computers worldwide.

MICROSOFT

HQ: Redmond, Washington
Sales: $36bn (2004)
Profits: $8.2bn (2004)
Staff: 57,000
Founded: 1975
Chairman: Bill Gates
Chief executive: Steven Ballmer

The firm has promised that Vista will take what for Microsoft is a completely new approach to computing, with security not an add-on but an integral part of the operating system.

But to meet the autumn 2006 deadline, Vista will be launched with some key components missing. Once they have been released - probably in the form of so-called service packs - the operating system will have a much-improved filing system, a new way to render graphics and much higher internet connectivity.

One of its most important features could be the promised seamless integration with a vast range of computing devices - from media centres to wireless music players.

'Clarity, connectivity'

According to Brad Goldberg, general manager of Windows product development at Microsoft, the renaming is in the interests of "communicating the idea of clarity".

"That lets users focus on the things they need to focus on," he added.

A video of the launch showed the Vista brand name alongside the slogan "Clear, Confident, Connected; Bringing clarity to your world".

Microsoft has previously said that Vista will make malicious software that gets onto computers without the users' knowledge "a thing of the past".

Executives at the firm have said Vista, which is likely to run on high-specification computers only, has been designed with security as "part of the design, not a bolt-on".

Its 5 years since XP appeared and they aren't including the 3 most important parts in the new version. Just sjows all the money can't stop incompetence.

I've just started downloading the Beta version now out of morbid curiosity, set aside a 20gig partition for it, might even keep it for awhile. Came across this the other day, Windows Fista

*Not too sure if it'll run on/support the on-board graphics im using, system requirements state "A dedicated graphics card with DirectX® 9.0 support", and it is a Beta release :ermm:

Edit: think I'll be needing Virtual PC too

Second edit: Getting speeds between 4 and 12kb/s :o don't think I can be bothered if this keeps up :ponder:

Third and final edit:

And there we have it, a successful Vista install

I don't have a DVD Burner, so I used Alcohol 120% to create a virtual drive to mount the DVD Image on. I also had a 20gig partition set aside for it, so my machine now dual boots XP Pro and Vista.

There's quite a few subtle differences between Vista and XP, I've only just installed some basic programs and my internet connection, haven't played with it much yet -but with it being Windows, you know your way around already ;)

Here's a screenshot of the desktop with the new control panel showing, and the start menu.

The visual theme is called Aero and was set at default for this beta release, looks good imo :) I had to install Photoshop, there was no version of Paint to accompany the release, but there wouldn't be much point really seeing as it is Beta.

The installation was even easier than XP, there's barely any loading screens, two-three at the most, all that was required was the clicking of three confirm buttons and then it just got on with it. The installation took a good hour or so, and then once installed it asked for some drivers which were released with this Beta release.

That's all I can say atm, I'll make another post tomorrow after I've had a serious look around :01:

Can't see much point installing the beta - If I want the look of Vista there are plenty of skinning software progs for XP

Indeed there are, there's no real point to installing it unless you're an actual Beta tester, or just really really curious :shifty:

I tried Longhorn as it was about 18 months ago when it must have been alpha - liked the look but you couldn't do much with it.

This seems to be fully functional, if a little slow - though that might be due to a lack of drivers

I've configured the new machine I built recently to be multi-boot with Xp, XP x64 and I've just added Vista Beta 2 - I know there are fundamental techy bits missing but I have to say it looks great after a little play.

My daily litany is to curse Microsoft and threaten them with physical harm for the un-ending frustrations in their software so I suppose I should give a little praise when its due. Having said that I have been telling people what a superb operting system Server 2003 is so since vista is built on that it shouldn't be that surprising.

No problems with speed Rob (in fact its pretty rapid) and the driver support does seem to be improving - only a couple of M/B chipset elements seem reluctant to install.

Not bothered with it since, though a guy on another forum who I suspect has the same beta release as you has chosen it as his primary OS :ermm:

Once all 8 stable versions are released, I'd go with Windows Vista Ultimate for obvious reasons.

Windows Starter 2007 - Vista without Aero, probably meant for developing nations.

Windows Vista Home Basic - Basic Windows Vista for your single PC fam, doesn't sound like much going on here. Analagous to XP Home.

Windows Vista Home Basic N - European version of the same, but without Media Player (because of antitrust rulings against MS in the EU).

Windows Vista Home Premium - This is the one we're all probably gonna own. It's got Media Center functionality, Cable Card support, the whole home-media shebang.

Windows Vista Business - Think of it as XP Pro, but Vista.

Windows Vista Business N - Think of it as XP Pro, but Vista, but Euro.

Windows Vista Enterprise - Business version of Vista with numerous enterprise features, like Virtual PC, volume encryption, etc.

Windows Vista Ultimate - Love that name. This one does all of the above (and more); what else do you need to know? It's ultimate Windows..

But still boot straight to Linux ;)

Having said that there's bound to be lots of interesting software that'll be Vista specific...
