 OK, this was fantastic :yahoo:
It was absolutely hilarious, Ben, Beau and Claudia were fantastic.
Interesting back story regarding Colonel Mitchell and nice flashbacks.
Loved Jack's you can have anything you want - professionally - maybe not anything
I thought Ben was outstanding as ever, reflecting on his past, uncertain about the future and playing the humour just right. Claudia shows how versatile she can be picking up Vala's mischevious nature, her and Daniel are great together.
The Merlin/Avalon plot not so sure about, however it was a great cliffhanger :)
I believe I may like this season

Must admit that there was a certain amount of  when they introduced the Merlin/Avalon story
A promising start though. Browder's certainly hit the ground running and to be honest I really don't see them missing RDA too much this season. There looks to be some nice new dynamics there with BB and CB. This may well inject a new lease of life into the show.

 I actually watched it again :o  it might even get a third viewing.
The new additions, Beau Bridges included seemed to fit in effortlessly and I'm actually quite excited about seeing the rest of the season now
Is it me or did the dialogue seem better than usual :)

Didn't pick up on the langauge to be fair Alex, although I hear what you're saying about the addition of Beau Bridges. Along with the signing of Mitch Pileggi to Atlantis, this is giving the show a massive infusion of talent. Not that the existing cast isn't talented, far from it, but a name like Beau Bridges practically guarantees quality, and on first glance that looks to be the case.
It's weird, the show's almost becoming Stargate SG1: The Next Generation, and to be fair this is exactly what the show needs. They tried something similar on The X Files in the 8th and 9th seasons, bringing in new characters. There only mistake was going out of their way to retain Gillian Anderson if for no other reason than window-dressing.
I think if SG1 plays it's cards right here, and this is indeed a transitional period, the show could quite easily go on for another 8 or 9 years. They've looked to have kicked the Goa'uld storyline into touch, so a new central theme to the show, and new cast members really could be laying the cornerstones of another SG1 campaign for years to come.
I really haven't been this excited about SG1 in a long time

Just seemed like they made more effort than normal especially with the humour.
Sometimes the dialogue on the show is a little flat and it was fair sparkling in this
The introductions were worked in very well

I think as far as the humour goes, that would have been a conscious decision. Since the news of RDA's extremely limited role this season fans have been concerned that his character was the focal point of much of SG1's humour. I think with Avalon Part 1 they simply put their cards on the table and said look, RDA's not here, but we've still got a handle on how to write humour into this show. For me it worked. The new dynamics alone are enough to keep me watching for now.

Interesting season opener.
Cameron Mitchell looks like a good character, but I'm suprised they didn't make more effot to distance him from John Crichton. He came across almost exactly the same, but a little more disciplined. I thought it was a bit of a mistake to have CB in his first ep too, but they seemed to treat it as a way to acknowledge the farscape fans, and get all the jokes out of the way (such as the "I'm sure I've not met you before", and the limited gene pool joke).
I find it really weird watching Claudia as Vala. Aeryn smilling is always a little disturbing. I keep thinking shes had a nebari mind cleanse.
Beau Bridges will fit right in, although I was a little disappointed they didn't show more of where O'Neill is now. Has he retired again? Has he been promoted to Washington? Is he still seeing Sam? Does anyone know if RDA has closed the door on stargate now (or should that be iris), or will he still make the occasional guest apperance?
Apart from the new guys, it was a pretty good ep. Best of all, SG1 goes to Glastonbury!! I never realised Glastonbury was built on top of an ancient repository. That explains a lot of the weirdness I saw down there a few weeks ago.

Can only be a good thing  no seriously I think as the character develops we will see more changes. I thought he played it down a lot more than Crichton and I think there is going to be an interesting history for the character.
 I know what you mean about Claudia smiling but she has sold the character to me, its nice to see her having some fun for a change. There were little nods which I thought was apt but I don't think they made too much of it. (Of course I lapped it up though)
RDA basically wants to spend a lot more time with his family so I wouldn't expect too much :)

I'm not. Crichton's a very popular character, still. Doesn't surprise me that the writers would want to use this to their advantage.
Re: RDA, I doubt very very much that we've seen the last of him. If I recall correctly he's scheduled for a few more episodes this season at some point.

IN THE MAKING ... AVALON, PART 1
By Joseph Mallozzi Stargate SG-1 Executive Producer
We were all in agreement. The back half of Season Eight was a perfect lead-up and conclusion to the series. Anubis had been dealt with, the Goa'uld and Replicators defeated, and the Jaffa were finally free. Granted, we had been wrapping up storylines since Season Five but in this case, we're talking major storylines.
So, what next? That was the question that presented us as we geared up for SG-1's ninth season. Well, it so happened that Robert Cooper had been toying with an idea for quite some time: a powerful new enemy that ... I can't tell you anything about at the moment.
Anyway, the lead-up to discovering this new enemy had to involve our main characters. Only we had to ask ourselves, what were our main characters doing after the events of Season Eight? They had finally succeeded in ending the threats that had loomed over this galaxy for so long. Teal'c had already made clear his intention to go help his fellow Jaffa build a free nation. And O'Neill ... well, O'Neill had moved on. And Carter ... would be "out-of-the-mix" for the show's first six episodes. And, well, Daniel had always wanted to go to Atlantis ...
We needed the team back -- but it didn't make sense for the SG-1 we knew to exist anymore. So that became new SG-1 team leader Cameron Mitchell's first mission: to get the band back together. Easier said than done, of course, because complicating matters is the return of an old friend with a hidden agenda.
# Before being cast as Colonel Cameron Mitchell and Vala Mal Doran, respectively, Ben Browder was considered for the role of Colonel Everett in Atlantis's first season two-part closer "The Siege" I and II, while Claudia Black was considered for the role of Teal'c's love interest in "Affinity."
# Vala's "limited gene pool" line was, of course, Robert's dig at all those who complained that Ben and Michael looked too much alike.
# We knew Ben was a talented actor, and we'd been pleasantly surprised by his w**k ethic, but he totally won us on the first day of dailies. Specifically, it was his frenzied "Bullets bounce!" delivery that practically had us on the floor. We knew then he was gold.
# Loved Merlin -- but that hat! It was ... certainly ornate. When he first appeared on dailies wearing that hat, I couldn't help but announce: "Mitchell ... Gryffindor! Vala ... Ravenclaw." |
:lmao:
that should have been filmed

Great first episode  BB seemed right at home with the rest of the SG1 regular cast, and it is always a pleasure to see him and CB together :D
Like you have all said, the Merlin storyline was a bit..... I'm sure it will all w**k out in the second part ;) (hint hint  )
Though I do miss the leather trousers

I loved this episode. Browder looked as though he was born for this role (though we all know he was born to play another) the interplay between his character and Claudia's and Michael Shanks, was hilarious.
When we caught up with T'ealc, I was left wondering, "when did he become Spock?" The image of him walking in the flowing robes just reminded me of Spock in The Voyage home
I couldn't wait to see part 2.
Which was fortunately on another disc, which was quickly placed in the dvd player.

 Episode 3 coming soon
I'm glad you enjoyed it as much as me Jamie
TV Crazy - October 11, 2005 08:48 PM (GMT)
Just watched this on Sky One and thought it was good, but i definitely missed Jack, what we did see of him was limited - i loved the "you can do anything you want". I don't think it will be the same without him, but i do like Cameron, i thought he was funny too, just not like Jack, so the humour side shouldn't be affected in the new season.
I think they could of done a quick recap at the beginning, because people who don't watch eps more than once or twice (not me), could do with a reminder for example of Prometheus Unbound, cos i was watching with my dad and he couldn't remember Vala (don't know why).
I liked the getting the band back together storyline, Cameron going crazy interviewing all those people was hilarious and the people who didn't have funding for the AI robot thing "we were hoping you would get us funding" oslt. Loved that idea.
I also think the bracelets were a really good idea, poor Daniel stuck with Vala. I thought Vala was really hilarious too, all her comments about having sex with Daniel and also calling Teal'c "muscles". She made me laugh.
I do miss the theme tune in the opening credits, will we get it back in the UK or are we stuck with the 10 seconds thing for good.
Great cliffhanger - loved Vala opening the "treasure in here" pot and then "how much worse can it get?". Also the same thing happening with Teal'c and Cameron also really great. Can't wait for ep 2.
Ems :)

Well this is the most excited I have been about an new season of SG- 1 probably ever.
I felt that the episode could have been a little bit better but just the presence Ben and Claudia raised things and kept me glued to the screen, skipping the adverts as quickly as possible. I really liked the flashback sequences especially tying previous events of SG- 1 together. I did find it a little odd having Ben's new character in the mix but this is something that Stargate has needed for a long time to replace RDA, since he began reducing his role. I can't wait to see how he gels with the team as the season progresses.
RDA looked extremely aged, I noticed this during the eighth season too but now he really looks like the right age to play a General. Even in his limited appearance like the rest of you I enjoyed the whole "you can do anything you want" and I quite liked the scene between O'Neill and Beau Bridges character playing chess.

I'm not sure of my feelings of Beau Bridges yet although like others have said he should bring extra quality the show. I had a lot of the same questions as Bakhesh which didn't help the fluency of Beau Bridge's transition as the new base commander imo.
I'm not too keen on the whole Merlyn thing and I'm curious why the hologram seem to refer to the team as if they were from ye old England and the Knights of the round Table kind of thing. When clearly they should be expecting humans to be massively different after hundreds if not thousands of years of development to reach the cavern in the 1st place.
I really can't wait for episode two but you would have thought that Sky would have shown it in one feature-length episode much like the beginning of the second season of the 4400.

Not to give anything away, but they do answer some of those questions in upcoming eps.
Glad you're enjoying it. If you liked part 1, wait'll you see part 3!!

Managed to miss this when it was first aired on Tuesday...but caught the repeat tonight.....must say despite my misgivings I was pleasantly suprised at how well the new cast members worked.....
Loved the 'Havn't I seen you somewhere before' and 'limited gene pool' lines....
Was it just me or was BB doing an impersonation of RDA when he did the 'bullets bounce' bit? :ponder:
This show really is becoming a home for refugees from other (ended) series, what with Robert Picardo, Jolene Blalock, and Claudia turning up in past eps, BB joining the cast this year.....and in a still taken from a fourthcoming ep in a recent SFX magazine article I'm sure I saw Lexa Doig in a lab coat... :ponder:
What next Jeri Ryan as a Goa'uld, William Shatner as an ancient, James Marsters as a wraith......or next time we see the crew in the canteen at the SGC will we have some annoying plank say "computer, end program".........
