Could Matala's voice BE any more annoying?

 Probably not. But I did like it in a way - she made it sound quite alien, and I like the way her voice changed again when her Scorvian self came out.
I am actually quite gobsmacked - I hated this episode the first couple of times I saw it. The first time through it even sent me to sleep! This time, though, I really enjoyed it.
I'm amazed. There're aspects in here that I didn't like about the early episodes: D'Argo's growling, the music (I'm sure that drumbeat that kicks in during Matala's first escape has actually been sampled from Led Zep's Kashmir  ). Yet now I see D'Argo's attitude as being a representation of his youth and inexperience. It's also noticeable that D'Argo's rashness keeps getting the rest of the crew in to trouble, cos at this stage he doesn't care about them at all. The subdued D'Argo at the end of the episode is certainly more akin to the D'Argo I know and love, and it will be interesting this time around to see if the character he becomes stems from the closing moments here.
It's also interesting how this is the first time we really start to investigate how some of the characters got into this predicament. We know that D'Argo, Zhaan and Rygel were all prisoners, but this is the first time we begin to understand that at least one of their crimes was more serious than we had been led to believe.
The fight between Matala and Aeryn is good fun, although Matala looks more like she's doing some weird alien disco dance. That neural stroke looks quite vicious, and I liked the way Aeryn's unconscious form was framed against the red triangle of the Peacekeeper insignia.
Some of the special effects in this episode are breathtaking, particularly those involving the quantum singularity. The shot of Moya collapsing in upon herself and, later, the Ilanic cruiser are beauties.
This episode has gone up in my opinion considerably.
Let's hope the same applies to the next one - can't see it somehow!

This is harder to review for me. It reminds me too much of an Angel episode, seen only weeks ago. I know that's not fair, since this episode was made well before, but still, I can't deny it!
Okay interesting glimpses into the characters of both Zhaan and D'Argo, esp D'Argo, I'm very curious as to his crime. I'll agree with Melian on Matala's voice, grating or what. It's an interesting metaphor for how culture is, how a person can be too influenced by misplaced or forgotten loyalties, and the special effects were fabulous. Moya intrigues me, a ship that can feel or moan, it really does add to the appeal of the show, makes it more organic, which for a sci-fi show, is very unusual.
The tempral displacement ot whatever it was, bit too fresh in my mind, as first paragraph will show, and I've seen Memento in the last couple of months also. I bet that aspect is a lot more enjoyable with nothing to compare too, so I'm trying to be fair.
I'm enjoying Zhaan a lot more now too, her character is definitly growing on me. The fight between Aeryn and Matala, quite funny in places, don't they punch? Matala not being what she appears, obvious throughout, I'm assuming being Scorvian, not good then.
Overall I did enjoy this episode.

:( I just don't like Matala. I have tried to rewatch it, perhaps I'll give it another go sometime

She is annoying, no doubt about it. :)

I really enjoyed this episode last night.
I liked the time shifts as John skipped back and forth in time. I had clearly forgotten most of this episode as I found it quite shocking seeing D'argo skewer Crichton with his Quilter Blade ( spelling?). :o I liked how he kept flashing back to the same point with Zhaan and accidently breaking her mask , although every time I see this episode I feel confused to why he just put it on the floor and crushing it with his foot the last time it happens. I loved when Crichton had a "pleasure moment" from one of his time flashes with Matala, leaving Zhaan and Aeryn at the table and says he's going to get some air. Aeryn response there's air in here! Gesturing her hands in the air.
I like how Aeryn Sun knows Matala isn't all she appears to be and arranges to spar with her to discover more. I quite liked the fight itself as they verbally and physically fight one another. I particularly like how Aeryn smacks her down, not just physically, over and over and then Matala pulls her special scorvion move out of the bag rendering Aeryn unconscious, strikingly framed on the peacekeeper Mat. Just a curiosity question do we ever see that mat again?
I liked how we get our first hints on D'Argo's back story and why he was incarcerated. I can't remember do we know what D'Argo has told the rest of the crew his crime was at this point? Not his true-crime.
I can't recall what I found funny but there were also a few good laughs as usual.
hmmm it doesn't look like I'm going to remember to watch them in their correct order as I followed the DVDs yet again instead of the correct order.
Persephone, what was the Angel episode you were thinking of?

The mat makes a reappearance at the beginning of Nerve - I think that's it.
When I eventually rewatched this I enjoyed it much more than I thought, I'd forgotten loads of it. Matala still got on my nerves though
Qualter Blade I think :)
willowroolz - February 15, 2006 04:22 PM (GMT)
