I have finally got around to watching the first 5 episodes of Alias Season 3 and here is my opinion.
I think that the series is excellent and is better than some of the trash on television at the moment. The reason I believe that alot of reviewers in magazines such as SFX etc. has given it a poor rating is because I think that especially in the first 5 episodes its hard to settle in.
Everythings changed and it seems strange, for instance I have yet to deal with the fact that Dixon is in charge which I think is an extreme change, and imo is a very bad move for his character as I liked to see him out in the field. I can't get used to Vaughn's wife Lauren, even though I find her very attractive. I also am really hoping that Rambaldi does play a bigger role later in the series, I feel as though the first 2 seasons have been wasted in the form of the Rambaldi device that said 'peace' to Sloane. Although its a good mythological point to make in the series I feel that it doesn't make for excellent viewing, but maybe its just that I am dissapointed that it wasn't something really devious and dangerous that Sloane could have used to take over the world. Also I miss the interaction of Sydney with her friend Will Tippin which I felt was an intergral part during season 1 &2. And although I know Bradley Cooper does appear in one episode I was hoping that maybe we would see more of Will, but alas no....
I also can't get settled as its one of those parts in a series where you think that they at any minute are going to have sydney waking up again, and its been a double dream and now she is 'really' back in the agency or that someone is actually holding her and playing this scenario into her to she what responses she makes, then she wakes up etc. I felt this especially in the first episode but now I feel that I am safe knowing now that Sydney is in the real world instead of just dreaming.
There are many positive points though, alot of mystery I feel is keeping the show fresh, and I want to point out now the fact that the show imo was coming to a climax in series 2 and there was hardly any way of keeping Sydney involved for example she said that she would stay in the CIA to dismantle SD6 she had acheived her goal and apart from Sloane who was going to dissapear anyway due to the death of Emily. If something didn't happen to her to make her stay in the CIA how could they convince the audience of her continuation with the organisation....this loss of memory does help this as now we know she is searching for the past 2 years of her life.
I also would like to congratulate Greg Grunberg as his role as Weiss has now been stepped up a notch and it has been good for the series. Its great to see more of Weiss and I hope he is involved more in the future.
I for one think this series is shaping up to be great television but in comparison to previous series of ALIAS it is slightly down the scale. I'll keep watching and for people wondering if they should watch season 3 I would say do its not as bad as its been made out to be....
For me, this season looks better and better each time you rewatch an episode.
I've actually finished the whole seaon and can't find much wrong with it it is very much better than some of the tripe on TV nowadays....
...I would say its still essential viewing and that I am looking forward to the next few seasons.
The more I watch season 3 the more I love it - definitely improves upon rewatch :)
I think the reason why I didn't instantly love season 3 as much as 1&2 was because I felt disconnected and that I'd missed out on something (which I'm guessing is what we were supposed to feel seeing as we're supposed to sympathise with what Sydney was going through). I also think that the writers got a bit lost with some of the storylines because they introduced a lot of ideas that they didn't follow through, one being Sloane as a double agent in the Covenant w0rking for the CIA and having Sydney as a handler. I'm sure there are others that I can't think of at the moment. Having said that I still think season 3 was great and I applaud JJ Abrams et all for making a brave move and taking the show in a completely different direction. :)
I agree. I finished season 3 about a week ago, and found it as intruiging, exciting and addictive as its predecessors. Season 2 is still my favourite, and i miss Will, but it still makes great viewing
