Title: New Shows To Five
Description: 2005/2006

Because I know you don't all use the USD board, thought I'd post it here too. Good stuff

Only weeks in the job and Five's director of acquisitions Jay Kandola has snapped up a slew of new titles unveiled at the LA Screenings last month, including UPN's hot ticket, Everybody Hates Chris.

In a four-series package deal concluded with CBS Paramount International, Five has taken the Chris Rock-narrated comedy that was greeted by rare applause from usually jaded buyers when it screened in LA in May.

The show is based on Rock's own childhood, and explores the life and times of a family through the eyes of the eldest of three children attending a predominantly white school in 1980s Brooklyn. It unites Paramount Network Television and 3 Arts Entertainment, and has Dave Becky, Ali RT LeRoi, Rock and Michael Rotenberg sharing exec production duties.

Also in the Five bag are a pair of UPN soaps: Sex, Lies & Secrets, starring Starship Troopers star Denise Richards, and South Beach, produced by Jennifer Lopez's company Nuyorican Productions. The former follows a group of 20-somethings living in the hip Hollywood community of Silver Lake, while the latter follows a group of 20-somethings living in the hip Miami community of South Beach.

From UPN's big sister CBS comes comedy Out Of Practice, starring Happy Days veteran Henry Winkler and West Wing's Stockard Channing as a couple who are both physicians but have little else in common. The Paramount show comes from Frasier executive producers Christopher Lloyd and Joe Keenan.

Kandola said that the foursome would be "great additions to our already thriving roster of the cream of US acquisitions." Kandola took over the top buyer job at Five after Jeff Ford's move to Kandola's previously employer Channel 4 earlier this year. The new US series will air stateside from September and on Five late 2005/early 2006.

In other US pick-ups, Five is in the frame for Fox's new cop procedural Deviant Behaviour, created by Josh Berman (CSI: Crime Scene Investigation) to sit alongside its existing cop shows like the CSI franchise, The Shield and Law & Order.

However, the UK network is playing down reports that it is locked in a bidding war with Channel 4 and Sky1 for Warner Brothers' sci-fi shows Invasion and Supernatural, and Fox's action drama Prison Break. Sky1 has already bagged CBS Paramount's new sci-fi drama Threshold.

Don`t worry, I don`t remember a thing about them, so I don`t think you missed out - they weren`t as good as Dallas/Dynasty.....

I think they`re still ongoing in the US.

Eek, the amount of rubbish I used to watch ( as opposed to now, of course :whistling: )

Those two are daytime soaps while DALLAS, KNOTS LANDING, etc are the expensive primetime soaps (aired between the 8 to 11 pm).

That would account for the `inexpensive` sets, then... :lmao:

well now depend at what time they are going to show them <_<

Fangy and grrr - June 17, 2005 05:05 PM (GMT)
Not really excited about any of those to be honest. I was in The Forbidden Planet earlier this week reading the sci-fi /cult magazines ( criminal behaviour I know ;) ) and I'm sure I read in one of them that the BBC had bought Medium the Patricia Arquette show, anyone heard this ? Bit surprised to read the BBC had bought so I'm know wondering if I was mistaken. :ermm:

A midseason replacement, MEDIUM turned into a surprise hit. It's opposite CSI MIAMI but turned in such a good performance ratings-wise that it was renewed early.

Very unusual show. Patricia Arquette is fab. It all seems so ordinary, with a geniune-feeling family life, that it makes her psychic abilities almost normal. FRASER's Kelsy Grammar is an exec producer.

Which is why it's a surprise when it is treated in this ordinary way--minus the exotic luster associated with stories about mediums. Credit goes to the remarkable writers as well as Arquette (who has refused to get her teeth straightened or to look glamorous).

No, you're not mistaken, Tom (it is Tom, isn't it? ) I believe BBC have bought the rights to Medium  They've been buying up the rights to quite a few US shows recently, mostly cult and Sci-Fi, I guess in an attempt to create a dedicated viewing base for this genre.

I think you`ve sold me on the series ; perhaps the Beeb are going to show it on BBC3 ?

Ahem, I think the point I was trying to make was that psychic whatnots are normal for some people, and that it`s Tv/Film which make it come across as weird/abnormal. :ponder:

It's supposed to be very good, had very good reviews in the states and already been picked up for a second season so

I think it's slated to show on BBC1 or 2, probably 2 since that seems to be the channel that they've designated for the cult/sci-fic shows they're buying up. Having said that, if they reckon it's a winner, they may schedule it for a primetime BBC1 showing

Shall keep my fingers crossed - after all, this is the channel which didn`t show Roswell Season 3 and which passed on Angel. <_< Perhaps they`ve had a change of management and are trying to make amends, or they`ve finally realised that there`s a market for Culty shows .

The BBC didn't pass on Angel. They were about to get the rights to it when C4 came in at the last minute with a bigger bid. So they got the rights instead.

As an interesting aside, the name Jay Kandola rang a bell - it turns out she was head of C4 scheduling at the time they bought Angel. I've actually got a clip of her on Right2Reply (Points of View for C4) where she's defending the decision to schedule Angel at 6pm. She said something along the lines of "we see Angel as a family show and scheduled it accordingly" <_< And for all you BBC board oldbies out there, the person making the complaint is Kate Watts, who used to post on the BBC board that was :)

I stand corrected. :)

Silly C4 - didn`t they also schedule the first Season of Alias on Sunday tea-time ?! <_<
