May 31, 2005 - As reported at Trek Today and elsewhere, producer Rick Berman is starting to talk about another Star Trek film. Undaunted by the recent failure of Berman's Star Trek: Nemesis and the series Enterprise, the head Star Trek honcho speculated on the possibility of a new sequel within the next two or three years.

"I think that if this film is made it certainly won't get finished in the next year," Berman told the British Star Trek Magazine. "If it gets done in two years or three years I think that timeframe for a new, fresh feature with a whole different outlook would be fine."

From the sounds of things, Berman would like to separate the next Trek outing from the recent TNG-related films and the ill-fated Enterprise.

Berman also acknowledged that there is little, if any, chance of an Enterprise come-back on a cable network like the Sci Fi Channel. As he sees it, the problem lies with the economics of making a science fiction show, rather than the challenging of writing good characters and engaging stories.

"Unfortunately, our show costs a lot more than [the Sci-Fi Channel's] shows do. A lot of those shows are shot with budgets not much more than half of what out budgets are. I think that to continue our show at the level of production we've kept it at, to keep these actors, it would probably be prohibitive to do it on cable. ... The powers that be at Paramount seem to feel that the time has come to give things a rest."

Fans of Stargate and Battlestar Galactica might take issue with Berman's belief that quality sci-fi on cable isn't viable.

Since the prospects of Star Trek on television seem bleak at the moment, could the future of the franchise depend on the direction the next film takes?

Still in denial then Rick? Thats right, Enterprise was cancelled because it cost too much. and as we all know, its impossible to do sci-fi on cable.

Honestly, does Berman think that Paramount are going to let him ruin the franchise again? What does it take to make this guy get the hint?

Earth to moron, come in please!

I spent ages earlier putting together a reply to that one, but ended up losing my net connection and the post!

But Dave's said exactly what I wanted to say in many fewer words!

I can't believe Paramount sacked Manny Coto and kept Berman

Are they all thick over there. Ooops, wait, Yes they are apparently.

I didn't know they'd sacked Manny Coto.:frusty:

Is Berman officially still head of the trek franchise, even though it isn't doing anything? Are they going to let him sit around for a couple of years until the next incarnation?
