Title: 9 - The Empty Child

OOooooohhhh, did you find it as scary as they hoped you would?

Nah, me neither, but I'll bet my neices will be wetting their beds tonight

I loved the little touches, "Dr John Smith" rearing his head again. More telepathic paper  Capt Jack Harkness and his designlicious spaceship (now I really know what to ask Santa for this year   )

The effects were as ever stunning to say the least, the guys at the Mill continue to do sterling w**k.

I will need to rewatch it though, I missed this weeks "Bad Wolf" mention, I know they usually make it very obvious in the background but there was just so much to look at this week, I couldn't take it all in.

Overall a great episode, and the teaser for next week didn't give too much away this time, (is it possible they learned from their mistakes with the last 2 parter they did?)

Erm, bad wolf ?

Yay for an episode with a cat in it, but that`s probably just me. :whistling:

ditto the "huh?"

Thought it was a great episode though

In every episode so far there's been a reference to 'Bad Wolf' in some form or another (for example in 'Aliens of London' the graffiti on the TARDIS said 'Bad Wolf', or in 'The Long Game' there was Bad Wolf TV. Presumably this is building up to Episode 12, which is unsurprisingly called 'Bad Wolf' :)

This was a fantastic episode - up there with 'Dalek' as my favourite this season so far.

this was a good episode, not scary but freaky to say the least, such a good story, probably the best of season, it just seems to go from strength to strength!

grrrarrrgh - May 22, 2005 08:57 AM (GMT)
Not totally scary, but creepy enough. My boyfiend's 11 yr old son was watching with us, and hid behind a cushion a few times. (He could not hide behind the sofa, its pushed against a wall  :lmao: ) I'm glad they did not give too much away too and can'twait for next week - one of the best.

Re: Bad wolf - Not noticed that, will have to keep my eyes peeled :)

Dan Dispossessed - May 22, 2005 09:07 AM (GMT)
This was a very chilling episode. It's now proved that gas masks are in fact a sign of the devil :fear:

I think this episode has proved how to do suspence and horror properly and how to make part one of a two part story. It was great

Hovis - May 22, 2005 09:10 AM (GMT)
Can't say I found it that scary, but then I'm 40, not 10, so I guess I'm not really the target audience for that! But even so, it did have its scary moments.

Very, very good though. The effects were superb, especially the London scenes, with Rose hanging for dear life to the barrage balloon.

Very atmospheric, and so much going on. Can't wait for part two.

I thought it was a very good episode, but did not find it scary-eeriee perhaps because of the childs voice asking for his mummy. This series is going from strength to strength!

Very good episode indeed; one of the best.

If I were ten yeard old I would have been behind the sofa.

Mind you, if I were Rose I'd be wanting my money back. You can go anywhere in time and space and you never get farther than London :whistling:

Kind of weird episode. I thought it was not scary, scary. It freeked me out when things in the house thing were moving. Good Epsiode. 8/10

Thanks for that - shall have to pay attention. :)

According to the overnight ratings Doctor Who got 6.6 Million viewers whereas Star Wars got 3.5 million. Dr Who's audience share was around 38% if I remember correctly.

Just echoing what everyone else said. Another great story, The effects were brilliant, particularly the air raid, and richard wilsons transformation. Some hilarious lines ("Gimme some spock")

The gasmask kids were very creepy. I bet there were a lot of bad dreams on saturday night.

I think the two parters w**k mich better than the one offs. I'm glad the preview had a spoiler warning and didn't seem to have as much in it as ususl.

smellyphagor - May 22, 2005 04:58 PM (GMT)
I always find the combination of aliens and WW2 a winner, and I find gas masks very disturbing, so I'm loving this one.

Speaking of, ever seen the especially for kids "Mickey Mouse" gas masks they had? The most frightening thing ever. :fear:

NJS - May 22, 2005 09:05 PM (GMT)
Quite good - As I've said before I like multi-parters which allow a bit of depth.

I'm in two minds on the Doctor - one moment I find his quirkiness quite charming then the next it annoys a bit - confusing. Having said that I really like his "serious" asides - like the bit about "one wet lttle island said no".

willowroolz - May 23, 2005 08:12 AM (GMT)
Really good, brilliant effects. Thought Rose's conversation while she was held in the tractor beam was hilarious, as was the Doctor answering the phone. Looking forward to part 2

Outta Sight - May 23, 2005 09:14 AM (GMT)
Pretty much the same from me  I found the gas masks and the childish "mummy"'s very creepy :lmao: :fear: I couldn't figure out why Captain Jack looked familiar but a quick check reminded me that it was because he used to present Live and Kicking :lmao:

I thought he might have been a from Sky Captain and The World of Tomorrow. I've got it on DVD but haven't got around to watching it yet but have seen the trailer and Captain Jack reminded of Jude Laws character.

All I could think about every time I heard Captain Jack was Johnny Depp

Fantastic episode

I was really quite scared there at the end. Well, I would have been if I was 10 anyway  The whole concept of the child in the gas mask and his creepy little voice was quite eerie and I loved every minute of it

The effects as the victims face transformed into the gas mask was well done too  It was really unpleasant to watch :x

Fangy and grrr - May 24, 2005 03:21 PM (GMT)
One of the best episodes so far - I really loved it.

It was very creepy and for an early evening audience quite scary, the little boy calling for his mummy and all the people in their gas masks was very effective. The WWII setting was very well done and the three main guest stars were excellent. And once again they managed to combine the drama with some great humour - loved the spock line and the flirting between Jack and Rose over what they were reading on the physic I.D card thingy.

On the BBC3 showing I watched they ran the trailer for next weeks episode after the end credits which was a much better idea as it didn't spoil the moment of the cliffhanger and of course gave you the chance to turn over before you saw anything you didn't want to.

Pretty good two-parter, which was rather creepy. Actually this ep made the Ghost train I went on today even more spookier, because there was someone wearing a gas mask in that too. :fear:

DanielFullard - June 2, 2005 11:54 AM (GMT)
Loved it.....

The most chilling, dark and humor-lite episode so far. Captain Jack is an appalling idea and the actor who plays him is equally as bad but even that, and the fact that Rose's tale was actually boring for once nearly stops the epiosde getting a five but the whole thing was just so damn good. "I dunno wheter its marxism in action or a west end musical". What a line!

5/5

To be honest, I wasn't overly impressed with this one. :) I found it okay.. but not great.

There were some bits I particularly liked...
- The Doctor's conversation with the cat was brilliant - I was half expecting the cat to become a new companion.
- Richard Wilson is pretty much always great, even if he only had a rather brief role here.
- It was pretty spooky, but I wouldn't say anywhere near the "behind the sofa" level. Maybe I'm just desensitised. :)

Glad they gave a warning about the "next time on Doctor Who". I was very much frustrated that they did a "next time" with World War Three... frankly, I'd much prefer it if they didn't do "next times" at all, but that's the way marketing bastards who make the Crazy Frog a numer one hit w**k these days...
