Title: Episode 9 Cut Before Broadcast
Description: shock!!!!

jamiearmour - May 18, 2005 10:16 AM (GMT)
The next episode "The Hollow child" has been cut by bbc execs as it has been deemed "too horrible" for Saturday teatime viewing.

Well, it hasn't been cut, the sound has been edited. They think it's fine for kids to see someones head crack, but not so nice for them to hear it crack

An executive watched it and said he became disturbed by the sound.

Here's how the beeb are reporting it themselves.

'Horrible' Doctor Who toned down

Producers maintain the episode is one of the scariest in the series
The next episode of Doctor Who has been toned down after producers decided one scene was "a bit too horrible".

The episode, to be shown on BBC One on Saturday, sees the Doctor travel back to tackle a strange virus in the Blitz.

It turns former One Foot in the Grave actor Richard Wilson's face into a gas mask - but producers have cut out the sound of his skull cracking.

But producer Phil Collinson said it was still the scariest episode so far. "It was about time we did a scary one."

"It's a little thing involving the scene with Richard Wilson's character and the gas mask," said producer Phil Collinson.

"The whole sound effect that went with that was a lot more visceral. We watched it for the first time and said that was crossing over the line because it was a bit too horrible."

But he said the episode, titled The Empty Child, was still the scariest yet.

"It was about time we did a scary one," Mr Collinson said. "Doctor Who is well-known for being spooky and scary."

The series has also caused controversy over another character, Captain Harkness, who flirts first with Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) - before turning his attention to the Doctor, played by Christopher Eccleston.

News of the episode comes days after the BBC announced the DVD of the new series - the first since 1989 - would not be available to children under 12 because of a scene where a Dalek is tortured.

After the compaints about The Unquiet Dead, I think they're just covering their backs here...

Perhaps when you see it, you can imagine a thump rather than hearing a bone-shattering 'crack' :)

I wonder if the dvd with this ep on it will warrant a 15 from the bbfc

They do it all the time for daytime shows. Buffy had several instances of things such as neck snaps being muted on the beeb.

I'm looking forward to Mr Barrowman fliriting with the Doctor :lmao:

That's what the writers get for making the character so ambiguous for 42 years :lmao: :lmao:

Just out of interest, is the after midnight repeat on BBC3 likely to be as originally intended or has the change been made once and for all?

I've emailed a few people (in the know) and I should have an answer to that question later tonight.

Cheers Jamie :)

Sadly it seems the episode will remain in it's edited form for all of it's broadcasts :tear:

They don't seem to have decided on the dvd releases though, so we may yet hear Richard Wilsons skull crack. :ph43r:

This smells of a bit of publicity seeking to me. If you read your tabloid press with the rapt attention I do you will have noticed that pretty much every episode has generated some sort of news story preceding it. Prehaps they thought of putting some cracking noises on at some point, and then decided it would sound rubbish, or something.

BTW I'm not complaining- I'm glad that the BBC are doing their job and selling the series.

Well I would like them to have kept it as originally intended. There is no reason to keep editing bits out cause they might be a little scary. It's bordering on over censorship to be honest :ermm:

Not a big problem for me as I can be a bit squeamish on some things... remembering Calebs eye poke on Xander in Buffy.... euwwww! :x Having said that, I'd rather have a programme intact and as it should be, and wince/cover my eyes etc than have it messed with.

Andrew (HM) :yahoo:

Not if, as has been admitted, the decision was made by the production team rather than the BBC :)
