Title: Book 3. The Eyre Affair
Description: by Jasper Fforde
little pixie - May 16, 2005 11:50 AM (GMT)
Book 3 is The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde. :)
It`s currently selling on Amazon for £4.19, and is at 181 in their sales list. The string is too long to post for it. :(
You can also get it in WHSmith ; for some reason, they`re selling it with the normal books, rather than putting it in the Fantasy section where the Discworld books hide out.
The Eyre Affair is the first book in the Thursday Next series; book 5 comes out next July.
It`s a fun read, and I`m now hooked on the series .

Spoilers !!!
Up to the end of Chapter Four......
So, how`s everyone enjoying it , or thinking `huh ? `
For me, it took until the end of Chapter Four to really start to get an idea of what the book was about.
This is a re-read for me, and I`m finding it more thought-provoking than before - the idea of a society which is fanatical about Literature, rather than Celebrity, for instance.
Still not sure about some of the names ( Paige Turner ? ), but I love Pickwick the Dodo.
melian - May 20, 2005 09:31 AM (GMT)
This was a fantastic choice LP
My copy arrived yesterday morning, and between the train ride to and from London yesterday I have read more than half of it
How have I never read these before
The story is fast paced and severely funny, I actually laughed out loud on the train (  ) a couple of times!
I'm going to order the next couple of books in the series today!

I can't believe it's taken me this long to find this series of books! They are completely my style  Hilariously funny :lmao: I love the names................Jack Schitt :lmao: ..........Braxton Hicks :lmao: ........etc.
I was wetting myself at the Styx Hades part. The idea that Acheron is purely evil, murdering people in cold blood etc whilst Styx contains his evil to making false viewing appointments for cars, stealing biros and making appliances fail after the warranty's run out :lmao: :lmao:
The literary replacements for religious/social groups is great as well. Love the Baconians instead of Jehovahs Witnesses :lmao:
I'm ordering the rest in the series today  :lmao:

At the last count, I had nearly 200 books on my TBR pile - the problem is, I find a new series and .... Well... It seems you have a similar problem. ;)
There`s a Jasper Ffforde website, but don`t look at it yet , cos it`s got spoily bits, too. :)

I know that feeling ;)
But at least finding a new author and buying their backcatalogue is a lot cheaper than having to buy all your fav writers new books in hardback as you are too impatient to wait any longer (I sometimes even go so far as to buy them from the states as some books are released months earlier over there  ).

Ooh, yes, it`s like Happy Hour on Amazon .
Have only bought a couple of books from the States - Robert B Parker books from the Spenser series which weren`t available over here.
I did buy a couple of books from Amazon France - they have an English Books section - I got an Alias Guide from them, which came with a behind-the-scenes-DVD.
I love Amazon - I have ` saved ` so much money with them. :)
Outta Sight - May 23, 2005 02:38 PM (GMT)
I used to use Amazon but then I discovered Play and my affections were tempted away :lmao: I like the fact that items are priced as delivered so you can order just one thing rather than having to amass enough to qualify for free delivery and, also, once your details are set up, it's so quick to buy on there it's ridiculous. You can be in and out in under 30 seconds if need be :o
little pixie - May 23, 2005 03:24 PM (GMT)
I`m very faithful to Amazon . I like the ` Look inside the Book ` bits and the readers` reviews.
For those who have already finished ` The Eyre Affair ` :o , and want to read something similar, I bought this book at the same time....
Connie Willis To say Nothing of the Dog
Don`t know if it`s any good or not, I just read the first chapter on Amazon.com and it`s now lurking in my TBR pile. :)
..................................................
To Say Nothing of the Dog is a science-fiction fantasy in the guise of an old-fashioned Victorian novel, complete with epigraphs, brief outlines, and a rather ugly boxer in three-quarters profile at the start of each chapter. Or is it a Victorian novel in the guise of a time-travelling tale, or a highly comic romp, or a great, allusive literary game, complete with spry references to Dorothy L. Sayers, Wilkie Collins, and Arthur Conan Doyle? Its title is the subtitle of Jerome K. Jerome's singular, and hilarious, Three Men in a Boat. In one scene the hero, Ned Henry, and his friends come upon Jerome, two men, and the dog Montmorency in--you guessed it--a boat. Jerome will later immortalise Ned's fumbling. (Or, more accurately, Jerome will earlier immortalise Ned's fumbling, because Ned is from the 21st century and Jerome from the 19th.)
What Connie Willis soon makes clear is that genre can go to the dogs. To Say Nothing of the Dog is a fine, and fun, romance--an amused examination of conceptions and misconceptions about other eras, other people. When we first meet Ned, in 1940, he and five other time jumpers are searching bombed-out Coventry Cathedral for the bishop's bird stump, an object about which neither he nor the reader will be clear for hundreds of pages. All he knows is that if they don't find it, the powerful Lady Schrapnell will keep sending them back in time, again and again and again. Once he's been whisked through the rather quaint Net back to the Oxford future, Ned is in a state of super time-lag. The only way Ned can get the necessary two weeks' R and R is to perform one more drop and recuperate in the past, away from Lady Schrapnell. Once he returns something to someone (he's too exhausted to understand what or to whom) on June 7, 1888, he's free.
Willis is concerned, however, as is her confused character, with getting Victoriana right, and Ned makes a good amateur anthropologist--entering one crowded room, he realises that "the reason Victorian society was so restricted and repressed was that it was impossible to move without knocking something over." Though he's still not sure what he's supposed to bring back, various of his confederates keep popping back to set him to rights.
To Say Nothing of the Dog is a shaggy-dog tale complete with a preternaturally quiet, time-travelling cat, Princess Arjumand, who might well be the cause of some serious temporal incongruities--for even a mouser might change the course of European history. In the end, readers might well be more interested in Ned's romance with a fellow historian than in the bishop's bird stump, and who will not rejoice in their first Net kiss, which lasts 169 years!

grrrr, I ordered a copy from the library weeks ago, it was supposed to be being delivered to my local library. I called into the library today to find out what on earth had happened to it and it transpires that they have sent it to the other side of town instead
If I paid a pound they could deliberate on whether to buy another copy which apparently could take months, she didn't offer to get the copy back from the other library, maybe she has something against them  however I told her I'd buy a copy instead.
So I'll be off to buy it tomorrow, should have just bought it in the first place :damnyou:
Should I buy the whole set? everyone seems to be enjoying them :)
