Title: It's That Time Of The Month Again..
jamiearmour - May 9, 2005 05:26 PM (GMT)
Relax girls, it's just time to pick a new book for the club
I would like to suggest a non genre book this time. :fear: :fear:
I've been reading reviews of Nick Hornby's new book "Long Way Down", it seems it's a little dark, but a lot funny.
Here's a synopsis from Amazon (yeah like they don't rip it off from the blurb on the sleeve  )
| QUOTE |
Synopsis Narrated in turns by a dowdy, middle-aged woman, a half-crazed adolescent, a disgraced breakfast TV presenter and an American rock star cum pizza delivery boy, A Long Way Down is the story of the Toppers House Four, aka Maureen, Jess, Martin and JJ. A low-rent crowd with absolutely nothing in common - save where they end up that New Year's Eve night. And what they do next, of course. Funny, sad, and wonderfully humane, Nick Hornby's new novel asks some of the big questions: about life and death, strangers and friendship, love and pain, and whether a slice of pizza can really see you through a long, dark night of the soul. |
Any other suggestions?
laughitupfuzzball - May 9, 2005 05:39 PM (GMT)
 sounds quite good, I'll have a think :)
NJS - May 9, 2005 05:41 PM (GMT)
I've certainly enjoyed his other books - apart from one which I never got around to reading which was Fever Pitch funnily enough given my interests - I'd be okay with that one.
little pixie - May 9, 2005 06:14 PM (GMT)
That Nick Hornby book is only just out in Hardback ....Is there anything less expensive you`d care to suggest ? Not that I`m cheap, or anything. :whistling: ;)
jamiearmour - May 9, 2005 06:20 PM (GMT)
Why don't you suggest something pixie. You suggested a book last month that was a bit neglected, pick one and we'll run another poll, or just go with your idea as my plastic is a bit stretched right now (and it's not even the middle of the month :fear:  )
little pixie - May 9, 2005 06:37 PM (GMT)
I really enjoyed the Jasper Ffforde book ` The Eyre Affair `, although it is a genre book and I thought it took a while to get going - though when it did pick up, whoo-hoo ! I think it`s like Discworld; you either love it or think ` Huh ? `
The Eyre Affair (Thursday Next)
Jasper Fforde
...........................................
Amazon.co.uk Review
Pirouetting on the boundaries between sci-fi, the crime thriller and intertextual whimsy, Jasper Fforde's outrageous The Eyre Affairputs you on the wrong footing even on its dedication page, which proudly announces that the book conforms to Crimean War economy standard.
Fforde's heroine, Thursday Next, lives in a world where time and reality are endlessly mutable--someone has ensured that the Crimean War never ended for example--a world policed by men like her disgraced father, whose name has been edited out of existence. She herself polices text--against men like the Moriarty-like Acheron Styx, whose current scam is to hold the minor characters of Dickens' novels to ransom, entering the manuscript and abducting them for execution and extinction one by one. When that caper goes sour, Styx moves on to the nation's most beloved novel--an oddly truncated version of Jane Eyre--and kidnaps its heroine. The phlegmatic and resourceful Thursday pursues Acheron across the border into a Leninist Wales and further to Mr Rochester's Thornfield Hall, where both books find their climax on the roof amid flames.
Fforde is endlessly inventive: his heroine's utter unconcern about the strangeness of the world she inhabits keeps the reader perpetually double-taking as minor certainties of history, literature and cuisine go soggy in the corner of our eye. The audacity of the premise and its w**king out provides sudden leaps of understanding, many of them accompanied by wild fits of the giggles. This is a peculiarly promising first novel.

Erm, the book is much better than the blurb, which I thought was a bit off-putting - it was the customer reviews which sold me on the book, plus the first chapter was posted on Amazon.com.
Just ordered The Time Traveller`s Wife ` from Amazon for £3.99 - anyone have any thoughts on it for Book Club ? :)
laughitupfuzzball - May 9, 2005 06:40 PM (GMT)
 I liked the sound of that one last time, looks fun :)
goth willow fan - May 9, 2005 06:51 PM (GMT)
I bought it last month on the strength of the description but haven't read it yet. :)
little pixie - May 9, 2005 08:51 PM (GMT)
Whoo-hoo, converts ! :lmao:
jamiearmour - May 10, 2005 09:29 AM (GMT)
Could you bear to re-read it so soon Pixie? If it was named as the next book for the club to read?
little pixie - May 10, 2005 10:26 AM (GMT)
Yes :shifty: I`ll re-read it .
It`s a quick read, not too many big wordies, and since I`m further into the series, I wouldn`t mind going back and seeing how the first book fits in. :)
melian - May 12, 2005 01:41 PM (GMT)
I really fancied it too :D
laughitupfuzzball - May 12, 2005 06:08 PM (GMT)

Ok, I thought it might be time to start nominating books for the next book club choice, but I couldn't be bothered to start a new thread so I'm highjacking this one :p
Any one want to pimp their fav?
Fancing trying a new genre this time?
Maybe something from crime, or even non fiction? I think Bruce Campbells autobiography is a hoot!
Anyone?

Jamie went for a Nick Hornby book last time, but it was in hardback; not read any of his books, anyone want to recommend one of his paperbacks ? :)

About A Boy  They changed it slightly for the film but I recommend reading his version. I wouldn't bother with Fever Pitch unless you're a football fan, LOL.
jamiearmour - June 3, 2005 03:14 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I'd be up for a Nick Hornby book next. I've not read his latest one yet (it's at the bottom of an ever growing pile  ) But About a boy is sitting on my bookshelf just urging me to pick it up.
melian - June 3, 2005 03:38 PM (GMT)
I liked the film so I'm guessing I'll like the book too. It gets my vote
LoobiLou - June 3, 2005 04:16 PM (GMT)
The book is so much better than the film :) (but that's generally the case anyway  )

Well duh - the book doesn't have Hugh Grant in it do its a given in this case.
Margot C - June 3, 2005 07:10 PM (GMT)
LOL@Neil
I'm a big fan of Nick Hornby's stuff - one of his lesser known books, How To Be Good is brilliant. That was the first one I read and I was amazed how well he can write from a woman's perspective.

Now exams are over ( :yahoo:), I think I'll join in. I've enjoyed Nick Hornby's books before so I'd be happy to re-read one of those.
melian - June 15, 2005 12:12 PM (GMT)
So. Is it decided then? About a Boy is the new book club choice?
laughitupfuzzball - June 15, 2005 12:22 PM (GMT)
Count me out of this one, I've got way to much to read at the moment :)
I might have caught up a little by the time the next book comes round. :)

melian - September 8, 2005 11:48 AM (GMT)
Is it time for a new book?
Any suggestions?
How about something from the crime/supernatural(ish) genre, such as the first of the Charlie Parker series,
Every Dead Thing by
John Connolly :D
From
John Connolly's Official site| QUOTE |
| Haunted by the unsolved slayings of his wife and young daughter, and tormented by his sense of guilt, former NYPD detective Charlie Parker is a man consumed by violence, regret and the desire for revenge. But when his ex-partner asks him to track down a missing girl, Parker embarks on an odyssey that is to lead him to the heart of organized crime; to an old black woman who dwells by a Louisiana swamp and hears the voices of the dead; to cellars of torture and murder; and to a serial killer unlike any other, an artist who uses the human body as his canvas and takes faces as his prize, the killer known only as the Traveling Man. |
I suppose this one isn't really for the faint of heart, but it is a bloody good read
jamiearmour - September 8, 2005 12:27 PM (GMT)
That sounds great Karen.
I had been planning to ask for something obscure this time around. You know, something that few of us would have read before. (Yeah, I know, on a site full of bookworms that's asking a lot  )
But since I've never heard of this book or the author, I guess that kind of qualifies :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:
melian - September 8, 2005 01:52 PM (GMT)
:D
Shall we give it till next Wednesday for people to make other suggestions?
I don't want to seem like the book choice nazi
jamiearmour - September 8, 2005 02:15 PM (GMT)
Hey, I'm more than happy to go with the consensus.
Whatever the rest of the club members want.

That book seems a bit icky for me, but I`ll have a look at Amazon  to see if there are any excerpts, etc. :) Probably won`t join in this month anyway, due to a serious backlog of SFXs and Cult Times to go through, now that I can no longer get spoiled.
laughitupfuzzball - September 8, 2005 03:53 PM (GMT)
 that book sounds fantastic
