Title: Looks Like Cancellation
laughitupfuzzball - May 8, 2005 06:01 PM (GMT)
Just read this on the Official HBO forum

Sorry to be the bearer of really lousy news...
According to an Unimpeachable Source, "Carnivale" has been cancelled.
HBO has not made its "official" announcement yet, and it is unknown exactly WHEN they will -- quite possibly in the next week or so -- but they have definitely cancelled "Carnivale". |
There is a lot of address to complain to information and protest planning starting already so I think its genuine :tear: :tear:
jamiearmour - May 8, 2005 06:18 PM (GMT)
Damn. I thought HBO was different from other US networks. i.e. they knew a good thing when they had it

Crichton Kicks - May 8, 2005 10:33 PM (GMT)
Hardly surprising.
Why should HBO buck the trend and show a little backbone. The frustrating thing is the way in which they do it though; wait for the enthusiasm generated by the season finale to die down before trying to kill it quietly.
Oh well, HBO shows will be off my radar from next season then. Too bad.
laughitupfuzzball - May 8, 2005 10:38 PM (GMT)
Yes I was looking at their shows earlier and saw that they had renewed their other shows not long after the last episodes.
It doesn't take the sting out, it makes it worse.
Oh critically acclaimed quality show, bin that
Quite pleased to see lots of foul languaged cursing going on directed at them on their own forum
Crichton Kicks - May 8, 2005 11:03 PM (GMT)
The only other HBO show I watch now is The Wire, which garnered lower numbers than Carnivale, so yet again, it seems like a conscious move away from the genre rather than it being purely about the numbers.

And yet again, arse
And also
Bill The Bloodless - May 9, 2005 12:04 PM (GMT)
:(
Is this mid season or has s2 finished in the US?

:tear: It finished a while ago, I think they have been holding off the announcement in the hope people will forget about it <_<
Persephone - May 9, 2005 12:19 PM (GMT)
Yeah season 2 finished at least a month ago in the US :(
From James' post, looks like it's the genre rather than the numbers :(
Bill The Bloodless - May 9, 2005 12:22 PM (GMT)
Thanks both. :)
At least I've got a whole season to look forward to, though according to the dvd of s1, s2 isn't going to start on FX until September for some unknown reason.
goth willow fan - May 9, 2005 12:24 PM (GMT)
Looks like Crusade Syndrome of a sort - that was killed off because TNT really didn't want that sort of show on their network (which begs the question why the hell they commissioned it in the first place  )
laughitupfuzzball - May 9, 2005 12:34 PM (GMT)
It is also a pretty unique show, maybe they had complaints from Religious quarters
BtB the second season is excellent, shame the wait is so long :ermm:
willowroolz - May 9, 2005 01:30 PM (GMT)
Have they had a management change or something?
goth willow fan - May 9, 2005 01:53 PM (GMT)
I believe they have, or certainly a power shift of some kind
star_fury - May 9, 2005 02:40 PM (GMT)
ah well It doesn't pay to get attached to any show does it!
Who wants a bet that Battlestar Gallactica only makes one or two more seasons? Seriously think about it, it's quality, well made, well written, well liked science fiction... It's a prime target.

Unlikely.
Sci-Fi's mandate is a little different to that of HBO and Showtime. Galactica's also forming part of it's formidable Friday night lineup. Providing it's performance doesn't deteriorate too much, I'd expect Galactica to be around a while yet.

Ok there is a tiny hope that it may come back in another form. Daniel Knauf did mention on one site that if its not renewed it may come back in film form - lets hope :ermm:
Crichton Kicks - May 9, 2005 05:14 PM (GMT)
I don't think I'm going to bother checking out any new genre shows from next season onwards. What's the point ?? Invest time, enjoy, see it get cancelled, get depressed, then repeat for practically every new genre show that you like. Completely pointless.
F*ck it. I think I'll stick to cop shows and drama. It's all a network conspiracy to turn us all into mindless automatons who watch nothing but what they want us to watch. And it's w**king, the evil b*stards !!!! :fear:

I hope you're right CK because it's always the good stuff that's the first to go.

Carnivale Pulls Up Stakes
HBO confirmed that it is canceling Carnivale, its Depression-era supernatural drama, after two seasons, Variety reported. HBO had produced a total of 24 episodes in the show's run.
HBO entertainment president Carolyn Strauss said the network had "decided not to renew Carnivale" because the series had come to a natural end, the trade paper reported.
Nick Stahl and Clancy Brown starred in Carnivale, which was created by Daniel Knauf. Howard Klein and Knauf executive-produced the series. |
From Sci-fi Wire
 Very natural end grrrrr
Dan Brown - May 12, 2005 06:23 PM (GMT)
Look at how long Stargate SG1 has been going, Battlestar could keep going as long provided it does as well as this which it should do.
I hope the next season of Battlestar is 22-24 episodes long though, 13 eps for a season is not long enough for me.

<_< Their justification is extremely poor. The story has not yet ended so that isn't the reason, why can't they just be honest about their decision.

Same old story; it cost too much per episode for the ratings it got.
The Wire got fewer numbers but cost less to make, therefore, WAS renewed
As I said earlier, I'll continue watching The Wire, but after that think I'll give HBO a miss.
laughitupfuzzball - May 15, 2005 10:08 AM (GMT)
I really hope that fans go ahead and cancel their subscriptions to HBO to get the point across.

It would never happen, the majority of fans are full of talk but when it comes to the actual action they would suddenly become scarce.

I thought i would try this out as the box looked intriguing in WHSmiths so i downloaded the first episode. I have to say i was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed it. I can't believe something like this would be cancelled? It was very Twin Peaks.
I can't see any topics in the season 1 sub forum, have they been taken away?

The topics are still there - however since it's been so long since they were last added to you need to amend the filter at the bottom of the page so that it says 'from the beginning' - at the moment I would assume it says 'from the last 30 days'. :)
Darris - November 7, 2005 03:22 PM (GMT)
Thanks Philip! :) I didn't even think about looking at the filter.

On the bright side, the series has better resolution than Firefly had at the time of it's cancellation.
Stewie Griffin - November 8, 2005 01:04 AM (GMT)
Thats good to know.
Its a shame though that so many shows are just yanked off the air by the networks without being given a chance to wrap things up, ie. Firefly, Harsh Realm, Crusade etc.
I do understand why the networks do this , but it would be nice if some of them could reward the people who do stick with the shows by giving them some sense of closure.

:tear: I know :tear: it so deserves to be on the big screen though, I really hope we do get it back in one form or other.
As James said there is a definite closure but also new questions are posed so there was lots of room to continue.
You will be happy with the ending though :)
Stupid HBO :damnyou:

Not at all.
It answers many questions, then raises a whole lot of new ones, but it does give closure ;)
Of course, it just makes it all the more sad that it is the end
