Quark is injured in an attack which Odo suspects is related to a murder committed five years before, in which Kira was the prime suspect.

Ferengi Rules of Acquisition:

Number 139: "Wives serve, brothers inherit."

One of the best, if not the best, of the season so far for me :)

Loads of good bits - Rom and doing the lock/breaking open the panel and admitting to breaking in to Quarks floor safe. Sisko & Odo doing good cop/bad cop on Rom. The Cardassian occupation flashbacks. Roms reaction to realising he's saved Quarks life and wont inherit the bar and Kira and Odo at the end where Odo realises he got it wrong all those years ago.

Great stuff :)

Why is it that Trek does these detectivey episodes so well? According to my reference book ('Beyond the Final Frontier' by Mark Jones and Lance Parkin) the writer, Peter Allan Fields, had also written for Colombo. It shows.

Love the way it delves into the dodgy goings on of the past. Love the way it turns out that Kira actually did do it! Very un Trek, a great twist. Well done!

Which explains the bit where Odo turns round and says "Oh, one more thing", oslt

Brilliant episode, and one that I will have to rewatch very soon as I watched it late and was very tired. I remembered there was a flashback episode sometime soon but I didn't have a clue it was this one when I started watching, so that moment when Odo remembers, opens the door and suddenly we're back on Terok Nor was absolutely riveting

The interweaving of the two stories, the mystery, the acting is all stunning, especially Rene Auberjonois - I don't think I've mentioned him much yet, but the guy is rarely less than superb. I particularly like his log entry at the beginning "Today's log entry. Everything's under control. End log"

A quick word for Rom, whilst I'm talking about actors I haven't mentioned much, because Max Grodenchick (sp?) is brilliant in this one, especially the scream when he finds Quark being attacked, and then again when he realises he's saved him and the bar won't be his after all

The Odo of the past was a very different character, and I really enjoyed his interaction with Dukat and young Kira, it really shows how those relationships have developed, and how the events herein undermine the latter. I didn't remember the end at all but I thought it was spot on and brilliantly done (I'm noticing the series has a wonderful habit of producing unresolved endings, which is great imo, although I think I can remember the episode that sorts out these particular issues, but I'm not sure   ). Don't tell me!

Fantastic

Just thinking back on this one and contrasting it to TNG at the same stage and there really is no comparison in terms of quality.

Rene Auberjonois is outstanding again in this ep and I love the edgy feel that the whole ep has, punctured by the light moments provided by Rom

They'd obviously learned from their experiences on the previous 5 seasons of TNG, especially the erratic nature of the first two seasons. The consistency of the DS9 episodes I've watched so far is impressive :)

Of course I was a big DS9 fan at this stage when I originally watched them as the videos came out and on Sky, so I'll be interested to see how I react this time when I reach the end of season 4, around the time I lost touch with the series

Seriously, thinking about it, I can't remember Rene ever turning in a duff performance. Armin either for that matter. Great characters/actors, even better when they're bouncing stuff off each other. DS9's very own G'kar/Mollari

The tone set in this episode just goes above and beyond anything that Star Trek's produced up until this point. DS9 was always intended to be darker and edgier, this is where it really starts to prove it.

Brilliant.
