Title: Boston Legal

Fangy and grrr - April 24, 2005 02:04 PM (GMT)
Anyone thinking of giving this a watch ?

Its a new show from David E Kelly who did LA Law / Ally McBeal / The Practice but its the casting that has me intrigued, the two leads are James Spader and William Shatner which is just such a weird combination imo that it must be worth a look. I've read some good previews and the clips I've seen looked good as well so I'm gonna give it a try.

Its on Living TV Monday @ 10:00pm

Bill The Bloodless - April 24, 2005 02:09 PM (GMT)
I was thinking of watching it, as long as it doesn't clash with anything else but there's Living +1 as well, so probably yes.

I heard a bit of a review that the legal side of it wasn't very realistic but as I don't know much about the US legal system that isn't gonna bother me too much.

Fangy and grrr - April 24, 2005 02:54 PM (GMT)
The clips I've seen were selling more on it being funny rather than realistic.

Bill The Bloodless - April 24, 2005 03:06 PM (GMT)
Oops. I wasn't trying to imply that it was intending to be realistic, it was just one of the comments that the person made. I'll be watching for the laughs not the realism. :)

Fangy and grrr - April 24, 2005 04:15 PM (GMT)
Don't worry I hadn't taken it that way. :) Btw was it Newsnight Review that you heard the review on ?

Bill The Bloodless - April 24, 2005 04:29 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I think it was. Not my usual choice, just caught it as I was flicking over.

Fangy and grrr - April 24, 2005 05:07 PM (GMT)
Don't be embarrassed about watching Newsnight Review Bill, I always had you down as a member of the intelligentsia. ;)

"Not realistic" is a good description of the US legal system, too. B)

I never watched the show, but I could tell from the promos and talk that the show is heavily comic, providing a suitable showcase for Shatner's overacting. It has Mark Valley, too, who I know from KEEN EDDIE. Candace Bergen joins the cast somewhere along the way.

BOSTON LEGAL followed DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES on ABC and did moderately well in the ratings. For some reason, it was put on hiatus and GREY'S ANATOMY took over the spot and did so well that the remaining 5 episodes of BOSTON LEGAL have been blown to next season. Those episodes include guests, Heather Locklear and Rupert Everett.

Is Boston Legal a spin off from The Practice ? I remember reading that The Practice was going to be cancelled a year or two ago and the only way Kelly could keep it on the air was to sack the whole cast and replace them with Spader so I'm presuming that Spader is playing the same character in Boston Legal. :ermm:

Hovis - April 25, 2005 09:02 AM (GMT)
I have the Sky + box set up to record it, so looking forward to it. Legal type programmes aren't ususally my thing, but I do like Bill Shatner, so it should be good fun!

Just so long as I can watch the footie tonight, and see Spurs win at Highbury for the first time in 12 years!

 Is it time to wake up yet?

That's correct.

Outta Sight - April 26, 2005 11:25 AM (GMT)
I watched most of it and enjoyed it but a friend rang 15 minutes from the end so never got to finish it  I will definitely tune in next week as well. I don't think I've ever seen James Spader in a comic role before so that was quite a revelation and Monica Potter and Rhona Mitra as the female characters were not grating like a lot of female lawyers are played :whistling:

Olicana - April 26, 2005 12:29 PM (GMT)
Oh pants I missed it, it probably wouldn't have clashed with anything either!

Thanks for the info !

I was just going to ask if there was a repeat , since it clashed with the 24 repeat, and I forgot to turn over to Living+ afterwards .

I really enjoyed this.  It was very funny and I was very impressed with the way they just hit the road running, it must be one of the best first episodes of a drama I've seen in ages. Obviously James Spader and William Shatner have the show off parts - which they are both excellent at - but the whole cast was great.

If anyone missed it I wouldn't worry as I don't think its the kind of show you have to watch every episode of to get. :)

Hovis - April 26, 2005 07:41 PM (GMT)
Loved it. Wasn't sure if I would, but Shatner was excellent, and James Spader really surprised me too! It was cool to see ex DS9er Rene Auberjonois too. I did think though, that the Rev Al Sharpton stole the show!

Will def be tuning in next week, and onwards!

Which one was Rene Auberjonois ?

Glad you enjoyed the show seeing as the football result didn't go your way. :( I on the other hand was able to enjoy the show and the result. :) Sorry.

In case anyone's interested (and we've discussed this in another thread somewhere so you might be aware anyway :D ) the "brother" show to this, Boston Public, starts on Living later in the month as well. That one's set in a school but same producers etc

Hiya!

Rene Auberjonois was the sharp faced older guy in the 3 piece suit, that gave Denny a real mouthful about having the affair, and letting down the company and the partners.

As for the footie... ho hum... no comment! Still have a chance of European qualification, and of course, there's always next year! (I say that every year though!)

I thought the name Boston Legal sounded familiar. I'll look out for that.

Bill The Bloodless - April 26, 2005 09:44 PM (GMT)
I thought it was quite good, funny in places, the music was bit intrusive at times.

The rivalry between James Spader and the lawyer from Washington looks interesting, though they've got to be careful not to make it too one sided.

Hey :)

I know which one you mean, I recognise him from something but its not DS9. :ermm:

Hope I didn't come across like I was gloating about the football I didn't mean to.

Don't worry about gloating over the footie, it's something I've had to get used to over the last few years! :tear:

I'll be hiding from the footie until August I expect now, but I will be watching Boston Legal again! A few good laughs to be had there, I think!

I watched it last night and I can see it becoming required viewing for me :D

So how long until James Spader's ex girlfriend flips out again? ;)

little pixie - May 3, 2005 11:15 AM (GMT)
I thought this episode was better than last week`s , shall tune in for a few more eps. :)

Fangy and grrr - May 4, 2005 04:36 PM (GMT)
Another good episode, I'm really enjoying this so far.

Nice to see James Spader's character actually affected by something, I feared he was gonna remain immune and aloof as a character which I think would of got boring after a while. Loved him insulting the blonde lawyer and as she walks off without saying anything calling after her ' yes you go to your office I'm sure you'll find that witty reply in there somewhere ' oslt.
